Drums of the Past

The sunset hopefully like a mirage, while the cock boasted of its scintillating crow, from there the drummers thought they could do a better job in walking the king of Ajura and its close province up which was their custom to do so with a drum. This was also the time when everyone in the village of Aura would have woken. While the men went to their farms, forests to work, the women stayed behind in the upkeep of the house and some went to the stream with their basket full of cloth and their locally made soap to go and wash their cloth. It had also rained the previous night and this was the season where snails could be seen moving around so the children were on a look out for them as they would take it back to their mothers that will cook it for them.

The journey to the stream by the women was always an opportunity for them to chit chat. There were always known to be talking in groups, one of the groups talking where comprised of three spinsters Ronke, Ajoke and Asabi. Ajoke was the one who brought out the topic of the wrestling match that was to take place at the market square at tomorrow’s dusk

“Emm, Asabi did you know that this wrestling match is going to be bloody”

Asabi then said “of course o, I even pity Adigun who is going to wrestle someone three times bigger than him”

Ronke who was a stalwart to Asabi said shyly

“But I think the reward is worth it. If Adigun wins the king would honor him as a chief and also marry off his daughter to him”

“It is true” Both Ajoke and Asabi said at intervals. They were just a stone throw away when they came across a man who stammered who has always wanted to marry Asabi. Asabi stopped and snubbed him scornfully; she preferred marring someone like Adigun.

Adigun was a young man with a very well built body. He was strong with that he became a wrestler; he was more of a ladies’ man. His opponent was a lot different; his opponent was savage, harsh with muscles like that of a macho man. He had six abs, his head was bald with his chin covered with hair. Just by looking at such man like him he could give you nightmares. It was a coincidence that is name was Ekun ( lion). For five good years there has not been a man who has beaten him before, he was just like a modern day Goliath.

The moon could now be gradually seen in the heavens and know the clouds began departing while the stars found their position in the dark twinkling. Adigun sat on the rock near the stream that reflected the moon. Silence swept through the space but the footstep of some person packed it away.

“It’s about time” Adigun said looking at the water flow by. Coming towards Adigun was the princess of Aura, princess Ewa just as her name implied she was indeed beautiful, her eyes were radiant, it was just like looking at the stars itself. Her hair was ever long and shinning. She let out a smile that bewitched Adigun. Then she said with her thin voice

“Sorry I’m late, my father’s guards won’t let me out so I took a shortcut here” she said. Adigun didn’t say a word he was still mesmerized by that smile. Ewa said after some seconds

“Are sure you want to wrestle Ekun for me?” She paused and said “He could kill you”

“Yes I will, even if it means putting me at risk” Adigun said confidently without hesitation. He then said “And we will be together” another smile found its way to the pretty face of Ewa. There was no doubt her heart was with Adigun. Two minutes later she had cricket creaking, she then said impatiently

“I must go now, else if father found out I snuck out he will punish me ” with disappointment Adigun said “you can go”

While Adigun was being Romeo, Ekun was busy with his press ups not minding the sweat dribbling on floor as he was determined to massacre Adigun.

Adigun went back home, a mud house in which he lived with his parents and little siblings. On the raffia mat I side his room he was seen laying by the blind bat which soar through he himself knew only a miracle could help contrive Ekun. He later slept, his sleep was then woken by the drummers who ruthlessly beat the drum and the female children who sang horribly with their hoarse voice. Adigun took his bath and dashed outside without informing any one. He went to hill which led to stream and started to run back and fought as a form of warm up. The image of him losing to Ekun continued to play in his mind until he lost concentration and tripped, as he crashed on his knee he began to yell and cry. There was no one on the hill until some kids who were on the hunt for snails saw him and went to call Atapa the local medicine man who took at look at the knee and said

“It’s nothing serious it should heal in three day” Atapa said gently like he was watching every word he said.

No, no, no I have to wrestle Ekun tonight, please Apata save me” Adigun said with determination suddenly tears began to flow down his chicks.

“Weep not man, why do you want to wrestle Ekun so badly is it because you want to marry Ewa?”

“It’s not only because I want to marry Ewa , People don’t think I can beat him but I want to prove them wrong else anytime I see Ekun I would always know that he got the best out of me” said still teary

“Touching but stupid, close your eyes this would only take few minutes”. The old man clapped his hands together and rubbed them against each other while saying some incantations he then placed his hands on Adigun who let out a loud scream that scared away the bird.
