INTRODUCTION

This book is designed to be easy to read and to give you, the reader, an opportunity to look at the subjects from a different perspective. It will be broken down into three categories per topic, which will be followed throughout the book, starting with My Take on How We Got Here (perspective), and What Does God Say About It (the Bible), Questions and Answers (Q&A’s), and the Conclusion, the last chapter will be The Golden Nuggets broken down by chapter. This book is not designed to judge, degrade, or be biased in any way. However, My Take is based on how I feel and may come off as biased to some if they disagree with my perspective, which is fine; I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I do hope, however, when it comes to the contents overall, that we will be able to find some common ground according to the truth as it is written in the Bible. It is my prayer that whoever reads this book will have a better outlook on life as well as a better understanding of the subjects since some people may not read a lot about them. Following this intro is a short Bio that may help you better understand why I felt compelled to share what is written, as I have a great deal of passion concerning the contents of this book, and my hope is that all readers will be able to identify with it one way or another.

MY SHORT BIO

I was born in Greensville, North Carolina, and as a baby, my family went south to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where I was raised. A few years after graduating High School (Dillard High), I joined the Army at the age of twenty in November 1986 and served thirty years before honorably retiring. My thirty years consisted of four of those years being served as a reservist. The twenty-six years of active duty were served between the regular Army and as an Active Guard Reservist. During my military Service, I had the pleasure of what some would call good leadership and some not so good. It wasn’t easy, but God blessed me to make it through. Also, during this time, God called me to preach His Word, and so in 2002, I began to do just that; however, it has been off and on, which is a story for another day. So, for me, I believe in the truth according to the Bible and other materials that can be verified, as not all opinions are grounded in facts. After taking a little time off, I was blessed to get a job as a contractor through Goodwill of San Antonio as a DD214 technician. During the three and a half years working in this capacity, I was recognized for going “Above and Beyond” by my supervisor, I briefed the Navy Admiral and his staff on the DD214 process, and I was put in for a “Leadership Development Plan” course by my supervisor. I am more than grateful for all the favor God has blessed me to have throughout my life, as all credit belongs to Him.

WHY MUST SOLDIERS DIE?

My Take on How we Got Here:

When I first entered the Army back on 26 November 1986, the military was quite different. Back then, we as Soldiers were taught the importance of teamwork and the love and welfare of our Soldiers and their families. This meant being able to do that and the mission simultaneously. When leaders understood and believed in this training philosophy (also known as the three-legged stool), moral was high, and we didn’t really have a problem with reenlistment. Also, suicide in these units was at an all-time low because everyone was part of the team and believed the leadership to be fair and impartial. If that is the foundation and standard, then it’s obvious not all people in leadership positions are living up to that standard. Thus, we have people in high places who create bad situations because they are not good leaders. So, this door swings both ways, and the positive or negative effect will be felt throughout all Soldiers under that individual’s authority. When a Soldier feels supported, they have room to handle what life throws at them no matter what that something is. However, it’s when they begin to feel isolated, mistreated, ignored, and uncared for that the suicide rate begins to increase. Now, take all of that and add life problems on top of it, the loss of a loved one, denied leave, or any other proverbial straw that becomes too heavy a load to carry, and suddenly you have a suicide attempt that went unnoticed due in part to an atmosphere that is toxic.

All the suicide training in the world, like ACE (Ask, Care, and Escort), will not stop these attempts alone; these are matters of the heart. It’s simple: before, we as leaders used to show, in some cases, empathy and love. Now, however, it has become more of a task-master approach with no warmth of the heart at all. This is true in all branches of service, including the civilian sector. I was once told by my NCOIC (Non-Commission Officer in Charge) at Brigade S-3 that when you get to Battalion level and above, Soldiers become like numbers or statistics when doing analysis and metrics. He was happy I joined him because I brought a fresh perspective or the human element back.

So, when you have people in positions of authority, whether in the military or civilian sector, that show favoritism, incompetence, or don’t lead by example. It will lead to a lack of trust, Isolation, low morale, or possible suicide. If the individual lies and shows a lack of morals and integrity and that behavior goes unchecked, it will contribute to an unsafe work environment. Anytime you care more for your career or political standings than for those whom you represent, you are not a good leader, nor do you care for those in your care based on your actions or lack thereof.

What does God Say About It:

We will first explore how God feels about government, workplace supervisors, and employees.

What does God say about government, workplace supervisors, and employees?

Romans 13:1-7 (NIV)

1. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

• Everyone must answer to God whether you believe in Him or not.

2. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

• We must honor the position people hold, whether we agree with them or not, or face judgment from God.

3. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will be commended.

• We do know that you can do what is right, and some in authority will treat you as if you were guilty of a crime. These people do not represent God and what is just; they are evil.

4. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

• We all need to be prepared when breaking laws to face the consequences of those actions. “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.”

5. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

• Our conscience should lead us toward doing what’s right, but that is not always the case.

6. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants who give their full time to governing.

• Notice how God says, “This is also why you pay taxes,” taxes are everyone’s responsibility regardless of how much you make.

7. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
