THE MEANING OF ADHA

Along with its dictionary definition being “becoming closer, that which is a means to become closer to Allah”, as a term of religion, adha (sacrifice) means “slaughtering an animal that bears certain required traits for the purpose of ibadah in a specific period of time”

Islam means “to submit”; meaning traveling down the true path without straying from istiqamah determined by the Qur’an and sunnah, doing what is required of us by Allah and his Rasul with the level of submission shown by Hadrat Ismail (alayhissalam)

Therefore, adha is of utmost importance because it is a symbol, a sign which shows that we Muslims are in an effort and determination to live our lives for Allah.

The purpose of adha is to remove the love of the world and worldly possessions from the heart. What is essentially demanded from us is to cleanse the animalistic attributes of the nafs. It is wrong to see Eid al-Adha (Eid of Sacrifice) as a meat festival. The intention during the Eid al-Adha should be to live with iman and surrender your life to Allah.

THE TYPES OF ADHA

In terms of judgement, adha is divided into two types called wajib and nafilah.

It is wajib to slaughter adha during the Eid of Adha for those who are wealthy and fulfill the conditions. Also, adha of nuzhur (promised adha), the adha sacrificed by those making hajj al-tamattu and hajj al-qiran for shukr and the adha sacrificed as a penalty for breaking the rules of hajj and ihram are wajib as well.

Any other adha sacrificed outside of these situations is nafilah. The adha someone poor sacrifices to please Allah, aqiqah and shukr adhas are in this category.

It is not wajib for a traveler to sacrifice adha but he receives thawab if he does so. Today, journeys do not take many days or have as much difficulty as they had in past times, therefore, wealthy people who have the means should sacrifice adha. If he is not able to sacrifice the animal himself, he can assign a representative to slaughter or have the animal slaughtered in his stead.

THE JUDGEMENT ABOUT ADHA

According to the Hanafi madhhab, it is wajib to sacrifice adha for those who are wealthy enough to do so.

According to the Shafi’i madhhab, it is sunnah al-muakkadah to sacrifice adha. However, If someone has promised to sacrifice adha during Eid al-Adha, it is farz to sacrifice adha for that person according to the Shafi’i madhhab.

The most basic condition of adha is to sacrifice an animal that is jaiz (permissible) to sacrifice. The duty of adha is not fulfilled unless the animal’s throat is slit and its blood flows. The duty of adha is not fulfilled by handing out the money needed for adha to the poor or giving away the animal without slaughtering it. If a person wishes to give sadaqah (alms), he should do so separately from adha.

WHO HAS TO SACRIFICE ADHA?

It is wajib for someone who fulfills those conditions to sacrifice adha:

1. Being a muslim. Just as in every ibadah, the first condition of adha is being a muslim.

2. Having freedom. It is not wajib for prisoners, captives and similar people to sacrifice adha.

3. Being rich.
