About the Author

Karin Hammarberg, RN, BSc, Master of Women’s Health, PhD, is an Honorary Fellow at the Melbourne School of Population Health at the University of Melbourne and Deputy Director of the Low Cost IVF Foundation. In 1982 Karin was a member of the team responsible for the first IVF birth in Sweden, and in 1988 she moved to Melbourne, where she became program coordinator for the Reproductive Biology Unit at the Royal Women’s Hospital and later also for Melbourne IVF.

During her years of working with infertile couples Karin has initiated and participated in research in a wide range of areas to improve clinical and psychological outcomes for those undergoing IVF. This includes project managing the largest Australian study to date of women’s experiences of pregnancy, childbirth and early mothering after assisted conception. She has also collaborated in research about women’s reasons for delaying childbearing, men’s experience of infertility, couples’ decisions regarding frozen embryos, the value of counselling for people considering donor conception, the health and development of IVF-conceived young adults, and the transition to parenthood for first-time mothers at different ages. Karin’s research has been widely published in international scientific journals and she’s often invited to speak at national and international conferences.

Karin is a member of the Fertility Society of Australia and has served two terms on the Society’s Board of Directors. She is also a member of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the Australian Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ASPOG).

Karin is married with two sons and currently lives in Mill Valley, just north of San Francisco.

Dedication

I dedicate this book to infertile couples and individuals who take on the challenges of IVF treatment in their pursuit of parenthood.

Author’s Acknowledgements

Over the many years that I’ve been involved in the areas of infertility and IVF I’ve had the good fortune of working with, and being mentored by, many extraordinary people. The knowledge and experience I gained from these people has allowed me to write this book and I’m deeply indebted to them. In chronological order they are: Professor Lars Hamberger, who pioneered IVF in Scandinavia; Drs Matts Wikland and Lennart Enk, who established one of the first private IVF clinics in Sweden; the late Ian Johnston, who was the medical director of the team responsible for the first Australian IVF birth and the first Chairman of Melbourne IVF; Dr John McBain, who subsequently became Chairman of Melbourne IVF; Ms Kay Oke, who led the way to make counselling an integral part of IVF; Professor Gordon Baker, who encouraged me to do research; and Associate Professor Jane Fisher at the Key Centre for Women’s Health in Society at the University of Melbourne, who was the principal investigator of the study about childbearing after IVF and my PhD supervisor.

I owe special thanks for assistance during the production of this book to Louise Johnson and Tracey Petrillo from the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority for their expert advice on the legal aspects of IVF; Dr John McBain for his technical review; my husband, Alan Trounson, for his help with the chapter about IVF research; Dr Matts Wikland for providing ultrasound images; and Associate Professor Jane Fisher and Dr Heather Rowe for sharing their excellent work on helping new parents through the transition to parenthood.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Wiley team. Acquisitions Editor Charlotte Duff saw the need for a resource for people considering IVF and believed I could write it; Bronwyn Duhigg helped me navigate the process of writing a For Dummies book; Caroline Hunter was the most wonderful and sensitive editor a writer could wish for; and Gabrielle Packman was a great project leader. I also thank Glenn Lumsden for his illustrations and the US editors for their input.

Lastly, I want to express some personal thanks. My husband, Alan, and our children, Karl and Alex, have given me much-appreciated encouragement and support during the year that I’ve been glued to my computer; and my ‘Wednesday Walkers’ friends have listened patiently to accounts of my writing progress — and sometimes lack thereof.

Introduction

When you’re ready to start a family you’re full of anticipation about taking on the joys and responsibilities of parenthood. However, if month after month goes by without you falling pregnant, you may get a sinking feeling that something is wrong. Most people take fertility for granted and that’s why infertility usually comes as a shock to couples who face it. Having no doubt spent many years trying to avoid falling pregnant, it’s quite ironic to discover that when you really want a baby you can’t conceive. Well, you’re not alone — about one in six couples experience fertility difficulties at some time and if, like many of them, you discover that you need IVF to conceive,
