Charles Anderson
In Memoriam
This book, Learning from Leaders in Asia, is dedicated to Charles Anderson. Charles was the writer of the predecessor to this book, Leadership Experiences in Asia. The first book would not have happened without his very capable writing skills, honed by more than 30 years as a journalist. Charles started out doing the same for this book, sitting in on the classes and taking transcripts of the speakers’ comments and class discussions. He was about to draft the chapters when he lost his long-running battle with cancer. In his place comes his devoted wife of 20 years, Kathy Griffin, who has picked up his pen and very ably completed the task. Charles is deeply missed by many and for some, lives on in these pages.
Professor Steven J. DeKrey, Ph.D.Editor, Learning from Leaders in Asia
To laugh often and much;to win the respect of the intelligent peopleand the affection of children;to earn the appreciation of honest criticsand endure the betrayal of false friends;to appreciate beauty;to find the best in others;to leave the world a bit betterwhether by a healthy child,a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;to know that one life has breathed easierbecause you lived here. This is to have succeeded.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
A book of this nature with so many people involved owes its existence to the following. First off, my thanks to the distinguished speakers who came to the classroom to share their experiences. They formed the foundation for the book and even the title. Each of the speakers is a role model for our executive MBA students and all readers of this book. In these times of media attention to leadership foibles these impressive leaders offer a stark contrast and we applaud them and their success. These distinguished leaders are: Mrs. Anson Chan, Mr. Shaopeng Chen, Dr. William Fung, Mr. Ron McEachern, Prof. David Messick, Mr. Stephen Roach, Mr. Jim Thompson, Ms. Marjorie Yang.
Secondly, my deepest thanks to my students, class members of Kellogg-HKUST class 10. These executives took on the challenge of publishing their work and rose to that challenge. They are all leaders in their own right and we thank them for sharing their insights and knowledge as their careers develop. This legacy of our 10th anniversary class is impressive indeed.
This is dedicated to Charles Anderson. Please join me in giving praise to the ground work done by this fine writer. Charles, who helped us write the first book, sat in on each class speaker and helped translate their words into actionable recommendations. Losing Charles mid way through the project as he lost his battle with cancer should have scuttled the work, but in his place his very capable and inspired wife Kathy appeared. It is Kathy whose words we read throughout the piece. She was able to integrate Charles’ work with the words and comments from speakers and EMBA students to produce the work you read today. To Kathy, my heartfelt praise and condolences. Charles would be proud.
My role as editor was a management role since most of the writing was done by others. In addition to those above I need to recognize Eva Wong of the EMBA program and her colleagues. Eva handled all the logistics in seeking approvals, corresponding with the many parties and helping me get the project completed. Always with a smile, her competence made this project a pleasure to work on. In addition I need to recognize my personal secretary Anita Lau. Her role was a constant one and without her I would not have been able to do my part on this project or any other. Anita, thanks for this and all that you do and have done for so many years.
Finally, to my beautiful daughters Kimberlee and Katrina and lovely wife Veronica. It is their interest in my work which keeps me motivated and appreciated. To my special ladies, my deepest love and appreciation.
In 2007 the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program brought out the book Leadership Experiences in Asia, which I co-edited with Professor David Messick and writer Charles Anderson. It was well received and is still selling out there as a composite of leadership case studies and examples of unique ethical dilemmas. The feedback has been good.
