Preface

Citrix XenApp® need no introduction as it is one of the leading software application virtualization solutions these days. The advantage of using Citrix XenApp® as a preferred virtualization solution has its own benefits; it enables users to connect to the enterprise application from anywhere and from any device, giving the look and feel of a locally installed application.

While it allows remote access to the users and workers, XenApp®, at the same time, also makes the connection, which is established, secure so that there is no risk to enterprise applications or enterprise data. This means it doesn't compromise corporate security.

We have drafted this book for administrators who want to upgrade their skills, right from administering Citrix XenApp® to implementing Citrix XenApp®. This book contains eight chapters that focuses on the step-by-step installation of the infrastructure components and Citrix® components, and explains how to make the infrastructure and the Citrix® components work together to deliver the effective solution for the application virtualization for Citrix®.

What this book covers

Chapter 1, Understanding the XenDesktop® and XenApp® Architecture, contains an introduction to the FMA architecture. It explains the strength and uniqueness of the new architecture and the latest version, 7.6. It also deals with the types of edition available for Citrix XenApp® and XenDesktop®. It also covers the use cases of Citrix XenApp®.

Chapter 2, Initiating the Hypervisor, covers the step-by-step installation of Citrix XenServer®, which acts as a hypervisor solution for Citrix XenApp®. It also contains the steps for creating the storage solution for the POC lab, and explains how to create a virtual machine on Citrix XenServer®.

Chapter 3, Setting Up the Infrastructure Components, covers the step-by-step installation of the four different infrastructure components—domain controller, DHCP, certificate authority, and SQL database—which work with Citrix XenApp® to support the Citrix XenApp® features and functionality.

Chapter 4, Setting Up the Citrix® Components, is one of the very important chapters of this book. In this chapter, you will actually start preparing and installing the Citrix® infrastructure. It covers the step-by-step installation of the components, such as License Server, Delivery Controller, StoreFront™, and also other Citrix® components.

Chapter 5, Setting Up the XenApp® Resources, contains the steps to configure the components. It explains how to prepare the master virtual machine and the master image for the virtual machine. It also lets you create Machine Catalog and delivery groups.

Chapter 6, Configuring Policies, explains the policies that can be implemented in the Citrix XenApp® infrastructure. As an administrator, you must be aware of how useful and complex can group policies for Citrix XenApp® be.

Chapter 7, Setting Up Citrix Provisioning Services™, covers the step-by-step installation of Citrix Provisioning Services™. It also contains the steps to configure the provisioning with which you can stream the OS images to physical or virtual machines, making life easy for the administrator when it comes to managing the operating system with software and system updates.

Chapter 8, Setting Up NetScaler®, covers the steps to use NetScaler®, also known as Swiss Army knife by Citrix®. Except the gateway and load balancing solution, it can do lots of stuff. It also covers the method of importing and configuring VPX and setting the gateway for StoreFront™.

What you need for this book

In order to make the most from this book, you need to have a POC lab system with hardware that has an 8 core processor (the processor should support virtualization), 32 GB memory, and 1 TB HDD.

When it comes to software, you need the following:

VM Workstation 10Citrix XenServer® ISO ImageMicrosoft Windows 2012 R2 ISO ImageCitrix XenApp® 7.6 ISO ImageCitrix® Provisioning 7.6 ISO ImageCitrix NetSclaer® 11.0 for XenServer®

Who this book is for

This book is for those administrators who are currently managing an implemented environment, and want to learn how to deploy a Citrix-hosted virtualization solution for the application in a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment. A reasonable knowledge and understanding of the core XenApp elements and concepts used during the virtualization of the applications are assumed.

Conventions

In this book, you will find a number of text styles that distinguish between different kinds of information. Here are some examples of these styles and an explanation of their meaning.

Code words in text, database table names, folder names, filenames, file extensions, pathnames, dummy URLs, user input, and Twitter handles are shown as follows: "You can name it Mirror"
