UNDERSTANDING HOW MEMORY WORKS

What is memory?

To understand what memory is, we have to look at it from the various perspectives that define it. All these perspectives help us to gain an in-depth understanding of memory in order to improve it in the most optimal way. It must be noted that each of these perspectives is not a substitute to the other but complementary. It is like looking at an object from different angles in order to understand its various dimensions so that you are able to get its true picture.

We have two broad perspectives of memory;

The ordinary literal perspective

The scientific perspective

Ordinary literal perspective

In our day-to-day literal perspective, memory is simply the aggregate total of that which we can remember.

Scientific perspective

Memory has different definitions and interpretations depending on the various scientific perspectives. We have two main scientific perspectives regarding memory;

Neurological perspective

Psychological perspective

Neurological perspective on memory

The neurological perspective looks at memory as an organic part of the brain. Thus, it is a physiological, or rather, biological perspective of memory.

In this neurological perspective, memory is simply a set of encoded neurons in the brain.

Psychological perspective on memory

In the psychological perspective of memory, memory is human’s ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently retrieve information of past experiences in the brain.

This perspective focuses less on the biological nature and function of the memory and more on the psychological nature and function of the memory. There is less emphasis on the biomechanics of encoding, storage and retrieval but more emphasis on the utility of the memory and its effects.

The emphasis is heavily in favor of the nature of the information stored rather than the storage tank itself. Psychology looks at the impact on certain stored information on behavioral characteristics such as joy, happiness, satisfaction, anger, sadness, stress, trauma, depression, among other behavioral attributes. It is in these considerations that mind becomes a critical factor. Thus, in this perspective, the desire to rewire the brain so as to avoid negative behaviors becomes necessary.

Where is memory located?

Memory is a complex web comprising of interconnected nodes via threads. You can’t just find memory in one part of the brain as you would do of books in a library or of a memory chip in a computer. Thus, memory is a distributed network of nodes in the brain. Various nodes are found in different parts of the brain. It is an intricate web like the internet with each node representing a server of some sort.

For example, taking a simple task as riding a bicycle, there are various parts of memory nodes involved.
