Over the years, I have seen the same extraordinary condition and attitude every time, in the thousands signed up to my SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind programs. They are extremely accomplished according to society's standards, and have impressive careers and plenty of accomplishments to share in their personal and professional lives. However, from my conversations with trainees who are just beginning their journey It's been apparent to me that, despite their accomplishments, they feel stuck in a stalemate. They feel empty, incomplete and aware that they could give much more, but are unable to break free from an unintentional pattern of poor performance.
For some around the globe the threat of a life-threatening illness such as a battle against cancer, can shake their smugness and lift them from their slumber towards a higher degree of thinking and doing. My students don't just expect an event of fate to inspire their changes. They are determined to take control and work towards their potential to ensure that they are able to impact the world.
I'm sure that you're feeling like that too. The positive side is that you have an instrument in your hand that can guide you to solve this tangled issue of the human experience.
The "big concept" to this article is you're capable of much greater than you think you can be--more accomplishments and more productivity, greater achievement, but you've been ignorant of this possibility all of your life. I call this possibility the 20X Factor. This means the sense that you can be capable of increasing your daily success to a rate of 20 times greater than what your current mindset lets you believe is feasible. It's not like your family members, or even our society, deliberately kept you ignorant about this vital fact. Instead, they were unaware of it, too and are not to be blamed for it. This is a fact that we cannot deny and continue to ignore it. Not only do you have the right to fully unleash your potential to achieve your goals and happiness, the world requires your highest output to tackle the serious issues that plague our modern society. The issues we face are so complex and deep-rooted nature that I think our collective minds must be synchronized as a global network of problem solvers to help us from the mess we have caused. This book isn't a study of the many messes that have been created however, there are plenty of writers who write about the dangers that we are facing on our over-used planet. This book will show you how you can unlock the vast potential that lies dormant within you, so that you are able to express the best version of you, support others who surround you, and create positive ripples across the globe.
Let me go back and give you an understanding of where I'm at and how I came to this point.
When I was a young child I was able to find comfort in the peace and quiet of the natural world. Growing up in the valleys and mountains that comprise the Adirondacks in Upstate New York (Upstate, as it is known is the name given to more than 95 percent of real estate area of New York. The other 5 percent is incorporated into it's New York Metro area. ) All I had to do was go through the back of the house to see the area. The passion of my father for hiking, along and my mom's athleticism allowed us to be in the outdoors. Every week, for the summer months, I'd find myself in the Adirondack summits together with my father and Brad my brother. I loved these hikes. They left me with an euphoria of admiration for the beauty of nature and thrill of discovering something new at every twist in the path.
I was able to accept the silence. I was unaware of the moment that this would turn out to be a recurring concept in my life. Nature was never in conflict with me, and as she was a respecter she did not make any demands of any significance. Most of the time, I would simply be in a state of relaxation and not think or strive for any particular thing and let the peace to settle.
At home the noise was loud and sometimes difficult as my parents fought frequently. In a way, I did not comprehend when I was younger, I felt disoriented and uneasy trapped in a secluded space built of my feelings and my own conflicts of emotions. I was in search of the peace and sense of connection that I felt when being in nature on my own, however, I was unable to find it in the relationships I had. Therefore, my connection with nature was a relationship I often reverted to in solitude and quiet listening to that amazing power and connection. I am able to tell you that it was this relationship with my mentor that helped me prepare the best for what was to be my life as an aspiring warrior.
When I was in high school, a habit of lettering in sports an interest that continued into my college years, too. While I appreciated the camaraderie and camaraderie of sports with other teams I was drawn by the simple and mental difficulty of endurance sports. The endless laps in the pool and on the track were primarily physical endeavors. Through these sports , I discovered the importance of correct breathing as well as the fundamentals of controlling the mind. My high school swimming performances led me to a place for the Colgate University team, and I was off to the University in 1981.
I chose to major in economics thinking it would aid me when I returned to Divine Brothers, Inc. A family business that has been in existence since the time of the founders manufacturing that began in 1898. Socially, my world exploded open when I started an obsession with beer as well as women (prioritized in this order, which is fair to include). After a year of uncontrollable excitement, I realized I had to get my bearings and secure myself, or I'd drift off more or drown completely in the ocean, which is why I decided to return to the method I had learned best: sports and nature. The rigorousness of my routine kept me focused and less inclined to be a part of the never-ending celebration.
I'd be lying if did not acknowledge that those were wonderful times and I've made many amazing friends from the time. But, I was naive about what I would like to do as I grew older, aside from the family business that was my primary strategy. In terms of the measurement of the time I had grown to be, I was out of room , even using the broadest of definitions. As my senior year came to a close I was offered an unusual job of an Big 8 CPA firm in Manhattan. The firm, Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), somehow figured it a sound investment to sponsor me to attend the NYU Stern School of Business as part of a work-study program. I was to work as auditors for two years in which time I'd complete a master's degree and be able to pass the CPA examination.
Within five weeks of finishing Colgate I found myself back at the summer program at NYU. For a short time I was enthralled by the freshness of the task enticed me, but it didn't take long before I was dreading boring life in life in the "real life". Was this really the way I would do for the duration time? I was completely on my own I was a bit overwhelmed as the cost of education piled up and the alternatives for escape diminished. I began to question whether I'd committed a fatal mistake where there was no way around.
Returning to home from the subway one Manhattan evening I was shaken from these negative thought when I heard loud shouts coming from an upper-level window. As I looked up, I saw the flag reading "SEIDO Karate World Headquarters." Interesting. It sounds like they're making a noise here I thought. I couldn't resist, and so I went up the steps and was introduced to that man, who later on would be my first mentor. He was the one who held the key to unlock the doors to my Unbeatable Mind.
Kaicho (Grandmaster) Tadashi Nakamura established Seido Karate during the late seventies. He was invited in America United States by Mas Oyama who was the founder of Kyokushinkai Karate, to oversee the training of this tradition in the US because it was gaining popularity and rapidly spreading. After a while, Nakamura became disenchanted with the emphasis on fighting tournaments of this style and wanted to teach karate along with Zen instruction to an larger number of students. Nakamura believed the internal development of the warrior should be mirrored by the physical development of the warrior or the technique could be utilized incorrectly. In essence , he believed that self-mastery was crucial as fighting ability. The strategies for fighting techniques, tactics as well as physical conditioning were the methods used in the training for the outside while meditation, reflection and silence were techniques for inner warrior development. In reality, many contemporary martial art forms have lost this delicate art of developing warriors and are focused on the competition or MMA-style training. Kaicho Nakamura's training and mentorship caused a paradigm shift in my own consciousness--meeting him was a watershed moment in my life. My life experience following Seido was quite distinct.
I was awarded my Shodan black belt in the month of November 1989. Also, I received both my CPA and MBA certificates that same month. However, the most important event that took place in November was when I got onto a train for Newport, Rhode Island, to begin my second job as an officer of the naval force. The guidance I experienced under Kaicho Nakamura's leadership provided me with new possibilities, and I forged ahead with one of the most adventurous ones. I was enthralled by Naval SEALs' calling to "Be Someone Extraordinary." I took the lure. In the Navy I joined in 1989, and I never thought about it again.
