Chapter 1:
Surviving Gaza's Destruction
“Father, is there nothing left in Gaza?” Najm asked his father as they walked.
“Yes, Gaza is finished, which is why we must take refuge in this jungle until the war ends,” Najm’s father, “Abdullah” replied, looking at young Najm.
“But father, what will we eat in this jungle?” Najm asked, worried.
“Allah is great, He will not let us lose hope,” Abdullah reassured his son.
And so, talking like this, they entered the desolate jungle. Abdullah and Najm began searching for wood in the jungle and prepared a small hut for themselves.
“Papa, I’m hungry,” Najm said in a tired tone.
Hearing his son’s words, Abdullah started looking around. Just then, a big, fresh rat passed by Najm, catching Abdullah’s eye. Without thinking twice, Abdullah started hitting the rat with a big stick.
“Papa, why did you kill it?” Najm asked innocently.
“Today, we will have to eat this to survive,” Abdullah said, looking at Najm.
“But Papa, it’s not a halal creature,” Najm said.
“Son, we need to stay alive, and in times of necessity, we don’t differentiate between halal and haram,” Abdullah explained to Najm.
And so, that night, father and son ate the rat and spent the night.
The next morning, Abdullah woke Najm up and they performed their prayers. Then, sneaking around, they left the jungle in search of water and halal food.
“Akbar, oh Akbar, thank God you’re alive,” Najm’s father exclaimed happily upon seeing a man.
“Yes, I’m alive. How are you? I saw the whole of Gaza turned into ruins. Nothing is left, no homes, no shops. How are you surviving here?” Akbar asked in response.
“We are in this jungle, waiting for the war to end, then we’ll move towards Rafah,” Najm’s father replied.
“That’s better. I have also set up a shelter here. If you need food or drink, let me know,” Akbar said, ending the conversation by placing a fish in Najm’s hand. Najm was very happy to see the fish.
“That’s fine, but my wife was with you. Where is she?” Abdullah asked, looking around.
“Forgive me, brother, I couldn’t save your wife. The Jews had reached the West Bank too... they stripped your wife in front of me. I fled to save my life. It’s possible they killed your wife,” Akbar answered.
“What? You left my wife there alone?” Najm’s father asked in shock.
