About the Author
David Pearl is the author of The Art of Steely Dan (Cherry Lane) and Color Your Chords (Cherry Lane), a survey of the harmonic styles of 25 top jazz, blues, and rock pianists. He recently completed The Jazz Piano Collection (Amsco Publications), twenty-two jazz standards arranged for solo piano, and The Art of Billy Strayhorn (Cherry Lane), an in-depth exploration of five songs by one of jazz’s greatest composers. His other books include jazz transcriptions of the artists Grover Washington, Jr., Dave Douglas, and Roland Hanna, and arrangements of jazz, classical pieces, and opera arias for piano. A freelance pianist, composer, and arranger, he lives in New York City with his wife and son, and performs and records regularly with singers and other instrumentalists. His new CD, Scythian Suite, is a collection of piano four-hands music recorded with his wife, Rubi Miyachi. He developed and recorded a series of piano lessons for the new online music education Web site WorkshopLive. Born in Denver, Colorado, he graduated from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.
Author’s Acknowledgments
Thanks to Mark Phillips and Susan Poliniak at Cherry Lane Music for giving me the opportunity to write about, arrange, edit, and engrave music over the years. To Mark, who recommended me to Wiley for this book: More Mondel’s chocolate is coming your way.
To Lindsay Lefevere, enthusiastic and supportive acquisitions editor: Thanks for getting me started.
Thanks to Tim Gallan, project editor, for guiding me along this path with his easy-going style.
To Sarah Faulkner, master copy editor, a promise: In the future, my future-tense propensity will be a thing of the past.
Thanks to my son Leon for being my crash-test Dummy, and for making sure my ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ arrangement passes ballpark muster. (But hold the relish.)
Thanks to my wife, Rubi, the real piano sensei in our family, who agreed to play through every exercise, generously shared her wisdom, gently pointed out problems, and waited for me to complete the five stages of grief before I could see she was, as usual, right.
Thanks to Roxlyn Moret, yogi and hands-on healer, for her careful suggestions for Chapter 1.
Special thanks to David Genova for reviewing this book and making so many important suggestions. You motivated me to tackle the big issues and improve the book all in one move.
Dedication
To my mother, father, and sister, who filled our home with Bach, Brubeck, and The Beatles.
