As a guide to newly mobile Djs who have paid for their controllers.

Set up the laptop. They have all the latest music. Investing in lights and the loudest speakers. Get to their first gig with people they do not know and panic sets in. I was this DJ and I want to share my experiences and guide anyone looking for insights in DJing parties in a new way. Keep in mind you may separate yourself as a DJ after reading this.

INTRODUCTION

Whats happening my people? If the party people in da house let me hear you say “YEEAAAAAH” . Say “hooooooooooo”. Alright now we ready to rock I’m Dj Big Ty on the ones and twos ready to keep you in the groove and make your body move. I started djing in 1990. I didn’t know what I was doing to call it Djing back then but playing music to rock the party is the basis of DJing and I always gravitated to having that job. I didn’t start on vinyl like most purest in the DJ community preach that you need to in order to be considered a DJ. Man that’s baloney hahahahaha. I started on cassette players. Pause one and drop the other in hopefully on beat boom the party has started. After doing that for a while at most of the house parties I picked up a cheap mixer from one of the local pawn shops. I may have at this time picked up some turntables but I didn’t have a lot of money but what I did have was a lot of cds. Soooo I uses the mixer in between a CD player and a dvd player on the other side. I know you’re probably laughing but it kept the party going. Believe it or not i got a few gigs with this setup and some house speakers. I didn’t know anything about real djing shoot I didn’t know enough to even care. I was just rocking the neighborhood and close friends and family. After some time and being introduced to DJ software and Laptops and controllers . I am on the mobile circuit making quite a name for myself and generating a lot of business. My time and experience also what other DJs care about and what your audience want and don’t give 2 cents about are totally different.

My audience don’t care if I am beat matching or scratching or using special effects or loops . They never gave a damn about any of that the only thing cared about is if I am rocking period. Oh and it's only DJs or aspiring DJs who ask questions like “hey what software is that” . Most people are like “wow you’re such a great dj” . The most favorite of all time no matter how good you are rocking is “hey do you have such and such”  This book is about cutting through all the BS you have surrounding DJing and separating yourself from other wannabe DJs out there . The biggest you can ever have as I have learned throughout the years on cassettes, cds, now controllers is learning how to read your crowd.

Its funny because this is  the last thing that most DJs talk about and is the most important to your crowd. When you learn how to read a crowd you graduate from just playing music and hoping you rock to being the master of ceremonies. Knowing when to play how to play even how long to play something. At the end of this book you will be the maestro, the conductor , all on purpose. So let’s get into can you feel this excitement I have right now. If you can good because before you get to the crowd you will have to learn energy, how to feel and how to manipulate it.

FIRST STEP TO READING A CROWD

Most of us start off as bedroom DJ’s. We love to play music and grab the tool for mixing and go. Practice and practice in the bedroom or basement right. Ok well then we take it a little further now this depends on where your goal is. I started off wanting to be a club DJ because that’s where I thought the money would be and the accolades. When you are a club DJ your life gets a little bit easier only in the sense of preparation. I’m sure there a lot of cons to club Djing but I am only speaking of prepping for the party. As a club DJ if you are in a bless situation you have a niche crowd. Meaning they are of similar age and similar music taste. This means you can dive in a particular area of music and hit it. As a mobile DJ you will have to know all music of eras because you will more than likely have different age groups at your events. Not only different age groups but different taste in music as well. I remember an event where I was a crowd participant. Oh and every time you are a crowd participant is a blessing. You get to be around your potential crowd and hear, see and feel their reactions to the DJ performing. Take notes when you are in crowd you will love that you did later when you are performing.
