Albeit, Sardinia offers extraordinary scenery that have as a centerpiece a medieval building (the former Cathedral of Bisarcio or Palatine Church of Ardara) there is however no doubt that the most fascinating one is the monastery complex of Saccargia, lying at the foot of the basalt plateau of 'Su Coloru' and on the hills of Codrongianos, Florinas (old Giudicato of Torres- Logudoro, administrative region of Figulina/Ploaghe). Despite the many ups and downs that have marked its life, mainly suffering due to neglect from man, as well as the excessive attention (read ' restorations '), and the greed of businessmen. Indeed, the old buildings have long been considered open-cast quarries from which to collect stones already processed and ready for use: Besides, history teaches us that this was the fate of the Coliseum, of the castle of Ardara, and Saccargia. In its lucky solitude it survives flanked by the ruins of the monastery, in whose area were found the remains of the nuragic age, as well as Roman, medieval, and middle ages, while Byzantine burials were discovered within rocky formations not far from the camaldolese settlement. Archaeological researches so far have not been able to confirm the existence of a residential centre dating back to the middle-age adjacent to the surviving buildings of the monastery: to bear in mind here is that the lack of material evidence might be due to the precariousness of these settlements consisting of wooden huts, thus, easily perishable material. Anyway, the historical documents seem to support this hypothesis.
