PREFACE

––––––––

THE MOST CHALLENGING decision and the biggest dilemma an author faces after completely writing a manuscript are whether to self-publish or do it the traditional way, find an agent, and hopefully get a publisher. Well, gone are the days when traditional publishing was considered the safe or easy route for beginner writers who couldn't break their way into mainstream writing. On the contrary, these days, even the most successful authors are now choosing self-publishing over begging good publishers to do it for them.

In recent years, content writing has grown from being a "good-to-have" skill to a "must-have" skill, and marketing this skill can end up giving you returns that you have never seen coming even in your wildest dreams. But did you think writing a book about something you found interesting, hiring some cheap designer to fling some calligraphy and colors together, and simply publishing it on Amazon, hoping people will go gaga over it magically, would do the job for you? Needless to say, No. Well, you need to break out of your fantasy, it's not good in there.

But how am I so sure about it? Not going to lie; I have made the same mistakes and learned from the same. Did my book go viral overnight just because I thought it was a masterpiece? Did I sell books like hotcakes? I don't think if I even need to answer these questions at this point, but the answer is a big No. However, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has been through this phase.

Here's a quick reality check. Most books fail. But fortunately for me, through the whole trial and error process, I have now discovered the best process and ways for self-publishing a successful book on Amazon, Scribd, etc. From writing a book that people will be willing to buy, establishing an e-mail list, gathering loyal lifelong customers, hiring the most suitable and experienced editors, designers, and proof-readers for the job, to determining when, where, and how to promote your book once it is published, I have learned and I am now willing to let you know my ways around these aspects of self-publishing a successful book.

Your Job? Follow the steps and guidelines that I outline in this book for you. These steps have helped me to launch books into Amazon's bestseller list and should take you there as well. Currently, I make thousands of dollars as a passive income each month, simply doing what I love the most, my passion; writing. In case you too are waiting for that right time to self-publish a book, it's never going to arrive; there is no best time to start doing what you love.

Your head must be full of doubts, insecurities, and excuses keeping you from doing what you must be doing right now. My advice? Just take the initiative; there is no such thing as a perfect moment; take your moment and make it right; START TODAY! That is what I did, and trust me, it is paying me off big time!

Now that you have got your hands on this book, that’s a significant first step! You've already come one step ahead of millions of would-be writers who are still waiting for an opportunity. Since you have already decided to self-publish your book, it is now my turn to let you know the best way of doing it and how to turn it into a bestseller.

After reading my book, the process of self-publishing a successful book on various online platforms will look a lot less daunting and probably give you the boost of confidence that will take you the heights in this field! Looking back in my time, self-publishing a successful book was not that complicated as I imagined it would be. All it takes is a will, an initiative, and a few fundamental steps, which I will be disclosing in this book.

Chapter 1

Ebook Publishing Revolution

History of Kindle and all eReaders

THE EBOOK HISTORY GOES way back to 1971; Michael Hart introduced Project Gutenberg. This was an exertion to make electronic releases and literature of the world's best writers openly accessible. Thanks to Project Gutenberg, we can now peruse 30,000 classic literature completely free and 100,000 more from accomplice efforts. But as amazing and historic this project was, it's not what led to the dramatic rise in the publishing of ebooks that we are witnessing today. For decades to follow, we saw slow progress, but meanwhile, many essential foundations were put in place.

The Pseudo Start: In the late 1990s, various different portable gadgets were introduced into the market, including the oldest dedicated ebook readers like the Cybook and Rocket eBook, which was released in 1998. And the so-called personalized digital assistants (in short PDA) like the Palm Pilot, was released in early 1996. Initially, the response was overwhelming! The excitement was real, and a lot of development went hand in hand with the increasing demand for these devices, but the primary book market was still largely unaffected by the whole scenario. The personal computers at homes were not suitable for a long-form reading run, and these newly developed portable devices were very complicated and tended to be more of a business tool rather than a portable personal device.

Ebooks weren't as easy to create and publish back then and with the absence of a more widely-adopted format, selection of ebooks was also limited and a hefty task as the publishers had to produce many versions of their books, and the readers didn't want to risk not being able to read the ebooks they purchased if they decided to switch devices. The industry decided to gear up, began working on making the devices as simple as possible and producing more accessible versions of the ebooks in the early 2000s. They were determined to have a standard format that would quickly come to prominence in the coming decade, but after successfully overcoming many challenges, the ebook industry finally stepped into a hiatus!

This is how we finally entered the modern era of the history of ebooks. As we approached 2006, the world saw various new and better developments in this field. Sony came up with a Holy Grail device called the Sony Reader. It was an actual book-sized gadget that put forward an innovative paper-like screen in the mass market, and this screen was called E Ink. It gave a comfortable, effortless, and portable reading experience to the users. Another incredible move made by Sony later was giving its e-readers to an actual online e-bookstore that made access to ebooks way easier and offered a great variety of ebooks with an accessible format. The readers could now buy and read ebooks, and all this was no longer a trick for the technically-challenged as the device was way simpler and efficient than the previous similar gadgets.

Sony enjoyed its glory period until Amazon launched the "now-most-famous" eBook reading device, KINDLE. Amazon paired with various publishers who ensured that this ebook reader was launched with a huge catalog of famous titles. And, most importantly, they made sure to put everything all together in a very efficient way that worked easily, even for ordinary consumers. Upon entering the market, Amazon's Kindle played yet another trump card. Before the Kindle's existence, buying and reading eBooks asked for certain technical skills and offered forbearance. Amazon played it well and decided to set the highest price of US$9.99 for almost all of its eBooks.

Before Kindle entered the game, book-market sales of eBooks were less than 1% of but as soon as Amazon's Kindle made its way into the market, the sales leaped dramatically, and within the timeframe of five years, they reached 20% of the US book trade market, which comprised of around 50% of the sales being its popular new releases coming from edited eBook versions, and around one-third of the adult population in the United States owned an e-reader or tablet..

Self-Publishing vs Traditional Publishing

NOW THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN the perfect book and finally ready to release and share it with the world, it's about time you face your biggest dilemma, Self-Publishing or Traditional Publishing? But before you can embark on your publishing journey, there are a few critical decisions you need to make, one of them being: will you self-publish the book or attempt to find a good publisher to publish it traditionally?

Self-publishing or traditional publishing is probably one of the greatest debates of the entire literary world. Authors who opted for self-publishing always sing the praises of higher royalties and the creative control self-publishing offers, while authors who picked traditionally publishing as their way say it is the only way to make it to the mainstream and gather attention and success. With people appreciating both methods, the real question remains: Which one is better, self-publishing or traditional publishing?

The factual answer, however, lies somewhere in the middle. Like every coin has two sides, heads and tails, both of these methods, be it self or traditional publishing, have their pros and cons, and the ultimate choice depends on you as the individual author! I will unravel all those pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing and honestly let you know which way is better for you and why. Let's dig deeper and analyze both methods individually.

Self-Publishing

Self-publishing is simply the procedure of taking all responsibilities and actions related to publishing a book. In case you pick to self-publish your book, you will be in charge of all editing, cover design, proofreading, formatting, releasing, and finally marketing the book.

Being “in charge” does not necessarily mean that you have to do everything all by yourself! There is no hard and fast rule, you can easily hire an editor, a proof-reader or a cover designer, etc. to help you out in the process, but at the end of the day, you will be the one arranging and paying for these services, right out of your pocket. This method allows you to have the ownership of the book’s rights and royalties when you self-publish it, and this is precisely why a lot of authors tend to pick this route.

Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishing is the procedure of working with a third-party who is a publisher to publish your book. Under traditional publishing, the publisher tends to manage all the editing, proofreading, design work, and marketing of your book. They will then publish it through one of their imprints and pay the author a certain percentage of royalties, which is usually pretty small.

So, by using the traditional publishing channel, you can exchange your book's contents for the third-party publisher's services and certain industry connections. But you will no longer have entire ownership of your book, but at least everything will be well taken care of with zero hassle! If that sounds like a fair deal to you, traditional publishing might be the one for you, but remember, it's very competitive and strict, and you will have to bypass various gatekeepers and critics first.

Now time for the showdown. Finally, you know what exactly each method offers; I will now address the biggest question here, the question that you came here for in the very first place, which is better; self-publishing or traditional publishing? Here's a quick rundown of the points that sums up all the benefits of each method.

Pros of Self-publishing

It's guaranteed that your book will be published

It can get into the market as fast as you wish it to.

You get complete creative control over your book.

You earn almost 50% of the book's print and 75% of the royalties from your book.

Pros of Traditional Publishing

You don't have to handle everything on your own, the third-party publisher handles most of the work for you, all you have to do is pay the author.

All expenses of the production are handled by the publisher.

They also promote the distribution of your book to actual physical book stores for greater exposure.

The mode you pick is entirely dependent on your background, skills, and the kind of book you're looking for. If you would like to know more about whether it's better to self-publish your book or get a publisher to traditionally publish it, before making the last call, I have jotted down three essential categories to look at for self-publishing vs. traditional publishing. Let's go through them one by one.

1. Money- Probably the biggest and most important category of all. Let's not sugar-coat it: self-publishing is more expensive than traditional publishing; why? It is simple; you have to finance the whole thing all by yourself. According to a recent survey, the total cost of self-publishing a book can be around $2,000 on average, including editing, design, and marketing services.

The bright side is that you get almost 50-70% of the royalties, so it's definitely worth the wait and investment. The bottom line is that the money you spend to make money with self-publishing is big, but the money you make is almost all yours. While in traditional publishing, the other party eats up most of your royalties, which honestly sucks if your book doesn't sell well.

2. Creative Control- The best part of the whole thing! Creative control is the actual differentiator between the two methods, self-publishing and traditional publishing. Its essence is that self-publishing offers you the level of control you want over the entire publishing process. Self-publishing makes sure you determine your costs, timelines, earn a huge percentage of the attained royalties after sales, and market it however you like. If you chose to self-publish, you have boundless control over the creativity!

3. The Timeline for Publishing- When it comes to timelines of when to publish your masterpiece, you have very few choices. Self-publishing makes sure you publish your book whenever you desire, be it in ten minutes, ten days, or ten years. All you have to do is get the formatting tool and format your book and upload it to Amazon or other platforms at your leisure.

If you want to publish quickly or take your time, self-publish your book. If you don’t mind it taking ages going through all the scanning and procedures and you’re willing to be positive knowing you have slim chances that your book might ever be published, you’re all in for the traditional publishing timeline.

Benefits of Publishing Books

ANOTHER MOST IMPORTANT question, WHY SHOULD I PUBLISH BOOKS IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHAT IS THE CATCH? There are various amazing reasons to take your time to sit down and write a book and later, of course, publish it. Being an author allows you to attain instant credibility, and that sets you apart from everyone else in that field almost immediately. It also helps you get the perfect clients and gives you the reason to increase your rates. Publishing a book and putting it in a marketing toolkit is very smart and rewarding. Here are a few perks and benefits of publishing a book,

1. Book Readers are Great Clients- Even though selling a $15 book might not get you rich overnight, the buyers who do take their time to read your book always tend to buy your other products/programs as well. Writing a book serves as a self-advertisement of your brand and gets you loyal long term customers. These customers spend more money with you. That’s why it’s a great idea to have the right strategy in mind before the whole writing thing takes place so that you can plug in opportunities and most probably create other higher-priced items based on the ideas and concepts of your book. If you have a well-settled back end set up when you publish your book, you are bound to get great returns, then this way, having the book is the perfect way to position yourself in the front seat of your ideal client and make them your loyal customers.

2. You've got Apple and Kindle! - It’s no longer a secret, but the reality is that, with all the platforms out there like Amazon Kindle, Apple iBook store, Barnes & Noble Nook, etc., you have more ways to get your book into the client’s’ bucket list more than ever before. The best way to get a lead is by offering free resources in your book as if the customers go to a specific page on your website and enter their name and email address to get a certain gift as they download. Always remember that Amazon alone has over 300,000 million loyal buyers, and with one book, you are a capture leads from people who are genuinely interested in taking in what you have to offer to a deeper level. This means more sales and a lot more clients.

3. Audiobooks Are Gold- It's pretty easy to turn your masterpiece into an audiobook, and this would mean that you will reach yet another huge segment of your ideal client's list. This has helped many authors have an audio version of their book (which is fancy), and you won't believe how simple and inexpensive this is! This adds to the value of your book as well as your portfolio and is an excellent way of standing out from the crowd.
