Chapter 1: Helping nature with organic gardening

Congratulations! By purchasing this book, you may assume that you have an interest in dedicating yourself to environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable organic gardening. This book should motivate you to put this idea into practice. If you already have experience in organic gardening, you will hopefully be able to pick up a tip or two.

Not many people are like you who think of ways to act for the good of nature. Nature may be smiling on us now. With the emergence of many problems in the world around us, especially global warming, large-scale soil compaction and pollution, such simple steps to alleviate the larger problem are already a big leap that each of us can implement.

Running an organic garden will take a lot of energy and time. So you'd better be prepared. Don't give up because of a small problem. Just remember that nature is full of challenges, but it also knows how to reward your hard work. You will see that all the sweat, all the tears, all the effort will pay off in the end.

What makes this work so difficult? In contrast to the usual way of gardening, organic is based on a supposedly great limitation of materials and resources that you can use to successfully plant your garden. Under no circumstances can you use synthetic materials. Everything must be organic. It has to come from nature itself. You need to run your garden with elements that can practically be found on the ground. Alternatively, you can use commercially available products, as long as they are organic. But don't be put off by this supposed limitation: in fact, the variety of what qualifies for "organic" status is enormous. You can use many tricks and home remedies to make your garden project a success. You will find some of them in this book.

When you work organically, you can help nature to replenish its resources. In exchange, you get all the materials you need for your garden from nature. You get the dried leaves, organic matter, some vegetable peelings and other materials from the soil. Such materials can be used as components of your own compost.

You can actually create your own compost. This is also highly advisable for a home organic garden. You can use the result of this compost as fertilizer for your garden plants. You will find some advice on creating your own compost in this book.

Once you begin to dedicate yourself to organic gardening, you will soon develop a great knowledge of natural processes. You will understand our environment better and appreciate its produce much more. You will learn what kind of plants you can plant in what kind of soil. You will develop a clearer view of how the components and nature of the soil can contribute to the success of your cultivation. You will know what to do in cases of difficulties with the growth of your plants or the appearance of pests in your garden.

Nature will love you for the way you use only organic materials for the purpose of growing plants in your garden. And you will benefit greatly from growing your own organic crops. You will be able to produce organic food sources and feed yourself and your loved ones healthy food.

Chapter 2: The history of organic gardening

The history of organic gardening goes back many centuries, when ancient civilizations relied on this livelihood as well as fishing to produce food with relative regularity and reliability.

Back then, nobody used fertilizers and pesticides. However, as the world's population grew, so did the demand for food. To meet this demand, new methods were developed to professionalize and accelerate agriculture. The idea was simple: as land is not available in unlimited quantities, the way in which this land is used would have to be further optimized. Fertilizers and chemicals were therefore developed to shorten the harvest time and increase the size of the vegetables to be harvested.

Organic gardening did not make a comeback until the 1980s, when more environmentally friendly lifestyles became the focus of social debate. Supported by political programs, some farmers returned to this traditional form of cultivation.
