When we took the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society
(lovingly known as CUMTS) production of SIX to Sweet Venues on
Grassmarket at the Edinburgh Fringe 2017, I had three main goals as
president of that society. Firstly, to not lose money, as we almost
always did on our Edinburgh shows. Two, to kick off an annual
CUMTS tradition of taking new student-written musical theatre
writing up the fringe. And finally, for the show not to be terrible.
It’s a huge testament to the whole of that original team that
we were able not only to achieve those goals, but also to catch
the attention of the wonderful producers who would take
the show to where it is now. I truly never expected us to go
beyond those initial aims and everything that’s happened
since then has been a total dream come true.
Looking at this score compared to the one we had back
then, not a huge amount has changed. Although ‘No Way’
and ‘I Don’t Need Your Love’ have had significant chunks re-written, the shape
of the show and the songs themselves are fundamentally the same. One of the most significant
transformations that did occur after the first student production were to the orchestrations, thanks to the incredible
work of Tom Curran. Tom revolutionised the sound of the show, working closely with Toby and Lucy to create pop
