An established cardiologist, sensitive to medicine’s current needs, explains how the answer may come literally... from the heart. Today, medicine itself and the concepts of both “health” and “treatment” must be revisited from a different standpoint, where the patient is not simply a machine, but the interconnection between body and spirit. The author presents an extraordinary record of various case histories through which she has personally verified this interconnection, showing how the physical side has healed by working with the spiritual aspect. As part of the overall picture, the heart is not just an effective and powerful symbol of a well-organized society, but it also represents the meeting point for both body and emotions, due to physiological reasons. This therefore makes the heart the key towards reaching a new concept of total healing. The book is accompanied by a supporting review of the latest news and publications related to this new healing concept; a field in which the author has trained very thoroughly.

About the Author
To my son, Giulio, whose pureand unconditional love has opened the door of my heart
A book is born from the desire to share something that we believe is important, vital or at least interesting. Over the years, in my mind and heart, I accumulated and preserved many discoveries and emotions. Now I feel the need to express them, to open them to comparison as well as criticism, and above all to let people know about them.
It is now more than twenty years since my first involvement with medicine, and in particular with the heart. And it was precisely when I began to study the physiology of the heart that I received an “illumination,” the intuition that right there, in the heart, we could find the solution to the mystery of life.
This little book is my attempt to integrate traditional scientific knowledge with the spiritual insight I acquired over the years, during a personal search for the deeper meaning of life. It is imbued with a poetic spirit that I hope you will forgive.
I will not try to convince you that this book contains Truth with a capital T; nonetheless, I will present facts and theories I have verified in my clinical practice and in the many texts I have come across – facts and theories that are currently gaining credibility even in traditional scientific circles.
With this book I want to guide you towards the discovery of a new way of seeing things where the heart, intended both as a physical organ and as an emotional center, is reevaluated and finally accorded the same importance as the brain, which has played the leading role in recent centuries.
The journey begins with my decision to pursue a career in conventional medicine, and continues through the stages of maturity and “awakening.” It was prompted by events that made me see the limitations of traditional medicine, the merit of other therapeutic approaches, and above all the advantages of integrating the two.
This book is an attempt to share what has fascinated me the most during my journey: the great wisdom of our body that, if carefully observed, also provides a concrete example of how a highly developed society should function.
If we begin with the awareness that our body has an extraordinary inner wisdom, that our organism is a set of fifty trillion cells that collaborate for the good of the whole, we are naturally led to reformulate the concepts of health and disease. Consequently, what constitutes therapy and care also changes, and we understand that focusing on disease rather than health is like noticing a few spelling mistakes in a beautiful poem instead of its deeper meaning.
I would be very grateful to anyone who sends me feedback. Such a response would make me feel part of that great community of people who want to contribute to an epochal change; who believe in collaboration, respectful relationships, joy and love as ingredients for a fully satisfying life.
Happy reading!

One October afternoon, about ten years ago, I was with a friend on the way back from a relaxing weekend on the Amalfi coast. The weather was strange; it went from sunny to rainy and then to a dense fog, which made the beautiful view seem surreal. We were in the car and talking about our mutual experiences of life and work, in particular about my anger at hearing many people, including colleagues, state that the heart is simply a mechanical pump. As we entered the white fog, very indignant and moved by a strong inner urge, I said emphatically: “One day I’ll show them. I’ll make people understand what the heart truly is.”
Immediately, a feeling I had never experienced before, a powerful vibration from which I could almost hear a sound, went through my body from top to bottom and then in a circular motion. Unwittingly my eyes filled with tears as a result of that powerful emotion that “strikes the heart.” In that precise moment I heard a wordless phrase inside, an awareness, which said: The heart is a door1. After a few seconds, the vibration began to wane, until it disappeared completely, leaving a wonderful feeling of sweetness, and coherence, as well as a slight sadness for the loss of such a wonderful connection.
I still do not know what it was. I still cannot find a scientific explanation for the event. I was puzzled by the sudden awareness of those “silent words” I did not yet comprehend. As an “enlightened” cardiologist, I had always thought that the heart was the seat of emotions, (or of the soul, as the ancients say), but I had never thought of the heart as a door. That moment marked the beginning of a search for something that would bring me closer to solving this mystery, to what I now perceive to be a more correct interpretation of that intuition of truth.
This book describes that journey. The chapters explain what I discovered about the heart, as an organ, as a faithful companion in life, as the seat of emotions and... as a door! I have kept this story to myself for a long time, almost afraid of being misunderstood. But now, after ten years, something inside me has clicked. I realize that my narrow beliefs held me back from recognizing the event of that October afternoon as a divine gift urging me to become a “messenger of the heart” in this life, a task that I am now trying to fulfill though this book.

“All natural philosophy can be summed up in one principle: know the law of phenomena. The whole experimental problem may be reduced to this: foreseeing and directing phenomena.» Claude Bernard
At age eleven I had already decided to become a doctor. I remember the exact moment when I realized that this would be my purpose in life. The idea that I could help others feel better used to fill my heart with incredible energy, strength and immeasurable joy. I had no seriously ill family members, or thoughts of possible financial gain I would receive, let alone the “fame” associated with being a doctor. I just remember waves of pure joy at the idea of seeing a person in difficulty smile again.
