How long can you maintain a state or condition that allows clear perception or understanding? One of the most valuable skills is probably the ability to focus. Every successful person understands the importance of having a laser focus on the task at hand, whether you're an athlete or the founder of a multi-million-dollar company. When an MLB player is watching the pitch and deciding whether or not to swing, he or she must be completely focused on the moment. A hedge fund manager in charge of billions of dollars must make decisions with the same laser-like focus. However, many of us find it difficult to concentrate. We allow ourselves to be distracted by technology, other people, and even our own thoughts. How many times have we sat through meetings only to realize at the end that we hadn't heard a word of what was said?

Introduction

As a community, we frequently pay attention to prodigies, or the rising stars in their industries. But what if we instead focused on those who were present at the other end of the timeline? As a culture, we frequently pay attention to prodigies, or the rising stars in their industries. But what if we instead focused on those who were present at the other end of the timeline?

Any new project must always begin with a concept, regardless of the type of creative work you do. Still, we don't always know in advance how significant or innovative an idea will be. Let's call it "random thought" or "r" and let r stand for a number that accurately describes it. Putting up a new fast-food shop in a strip mall? Give it a r that is nearly zero. Making a teleportation device that works? If you can pull that off, it might have a significant impact.

But as the adage goes, "ideas are cheap," venture capitalists frequently repeat it. The amount of money an investor is ready to write you a check for depends on your capacity to take the idea and convert it into a valuable product. The same holds true for any profession: A great concept handled carelessly rarely results in a significant outcome. Equally crucial is your capacity to develop an idea into a discovery, which differs greatly among individuals.

Chapter I

What being successful means

We're all curious about what success truly means. Celebrities often say one thing about success, but our parents or classmates often say another. In addition, it seems that signals about success are continuously contradicting in pop culture, movies, and among numerous "gurus."

One day, they'll claim that achieving a certain amount of fame, riches, or social standing is a stepping stone to success. Success is all about retiring early a few months later, and a few weeks later, it's all about founding a company that advances a worthwhile social purpose.

But what's this? They are mistaken. No one has the right to determine your definition of success, regardless of their fame. Here's the thing, the idea that they've been giving you about success throughout the years is false. What success meant to many of the "uber-successful" is what they flaunt as their notion of success. In other words, they are imposing their idea of success on you. Thankfully, dictionaries have been modified to reflect a more accurate understanding of what success actually entails.

In fact, the common definition is a level or evaluation of success, a positive or intended result or one that is successful.

So, what the definition of success essentially boils down to is one's own personal level of success. Success is a favorable outcome that you choose to pursue, and failure is when you don't. However, if you hit your target, you are a success. That is, success is a personal construct rather than a societal construct. With that being said, and in order to better understand what it truly means to be successful; we'd like to share the best definition of success we've found in our research of the rich, famous, not-so-famous, and successful. And it was written by Earl Nightingale. It goes thus, ‘Success Is the Progressive Realization of a Worthy Goal or Ideal This means that any person who knows what they are doing and where they are going is a success. Any person with a goal towards which they are working is a successful person.” So, here's what these definitions of success mean and why they're important to you. It means that you don't have to become a millionaire to be considered successful. You don't have to "make it" in Hollywood either. It means that becoming wealthy and famous isn't required to be considered successful. This is significant because far too many people strive for what is important to them, only to have the media or pop culture icons imply that true success is what "they" say it is.

The good news is that you don't have to feel like a failure just because your definition of success differs from someone else's. All that really matters is that you set your mind sincerely on achieving what is important to you, and that you are satisfied with your achievements once you achieve them. And, when all is said and done, being a success truly comes down to each individual's personal definition of success. And each individual's success is defined by, well, each individual.

Chapter II

How success really works

A friend of mine despises how successful his brother-in-law has become. "Oh yeah," he'll say, "I'd like to be doing that well, but he has very little downtime."

Another is bitter because one of his friends is in great shape. "Oh yeah, I'd like to be that fit," he'll say, "but he has to run like 30 miles a week."

Does this sound familiar? It's easy to look at successful people and criticize their success. So we say to another entrepreneur, "Yeah, but he constantly watches what he eats," about a thin friend, or "Yeah, but he's a slave to his schedule," about a friend who achieves multiple goals, or even "Yeah, but he took on way too much risk when he started his company."

But that is how success is. Fit people are fit because they exercise frequently. People who are successful are successful because they work extremely hard. People who have close family relationships have spent time and effort building those relationships, nothing worthwhile comes without a cost. It is unjust to blame those who pay the price. Failure will always result from a refusal to pay the price. The next time you consider pursuing a goal, ask yourself if you really want to do so. If you answered yes, the rest is simple but not easy.

Look around you, no matter what your goal is, so many people have already achieved it. There are excellent blueprints and easy-to-follow road maps everywhere.
