INTRODUCTION

HELP IS NOT ON THE WAY

In August 2020, a massive protest erupted outside the White House grounds, chanting "Black Lives Matter!" and "No justice, no peace!" The author's staff and detail team were trapped in a situation they had never experienced before. They had to decide whether to stay put or try to escape, as their vehicle was vulnerable and they were on their own. The streets were filled with rioters and agitators, and their security detail knew to keep going at all costs.

After reaching safety via underground access to their hotel, the author trembled from anger, but found reassurance in the Bible verse from the book of Daniel. He decided to live a life of significance, no matter where it took him, because he believed America was better than the story that night told.

Going back would lead to more political deception, division, and dysfunction, where insiders benefit and America loses its voice, freedoms, way of life, and future. To unite and move forward, we need truth from our leaders and stand together for the future. We must face the cold reality that help is not on the way from big government and the establishment, but we must step up and fight for our community, states, and nation.

WHO’S IN CONTROL?

The author encourages readers to embrace the challenges of modern politics and move the nation forward. They highlight the disarray in the Republican Party, the rise of dysfunction, corruption, and lies, and the rise of positive change. The author shares their experience as a governor, where they created a leadership development program for state employees and a leadership development program for local university employees.

The author shares their journey of making tough decisions and the importance of a solid foundation. Growing up in a ranching family, they were treated equally and treated as a team. However, when she ran for governor, she faced criticism from some Republicans who believed she didn't have the right anatomy to be governor. The author took two oaths to uphold the Constitution of South Dakota and the United States, recognizing the historical significance of this role.

The author emphasizes the importance of prioritizing state and federal Constitutions in decision-making. They apply this same thinking to legislation, asking questions about the constitutionality of bills and the long-term impacts of them. The entire staff goes through a detailed analysis for every proposed bill, allowing the Constitution to answer the big questions and apply their values and promises to the people of South Dakota.

The author also discusses the devastating 2013 storm that devastated western South Dakota, leaving ranchers feeling like personal failures. They lost their cattle herd, their ability to pay bills, and their hope of passing their way of life on to their children and grandchildren. By moving forward and embracing the challenges of modern politics, the author believes that our best days are ahead.

Farmers and ranchers are stewards of their land, which is a precious natural resource that will tell their story to future generations. The ranch they live on was purchased by their father when the author was a young girl, and the author learned about government policies impacting their livelihood. The loss of their father was devastating, and the author assumed the responsibility of being general manager of the ranch.

The author never imagined a life in politics or having a career in Washington, but politics kept getting involved with their business. The ranch's survival was threatened by the "death tax," which creates double taxation when earned and upon death. The author started attending local meetings to understand the situation and was encouraged to run for public office as a Democrat. After winning a state legislative seat, the author was asked to consider running for Congress.

In 2010, the author decided to take on an incumbent Democrat member of Congress for South Dakota's lone seat in the US House of Representatives. The race was closely watched and part of a national wave in opposition to President Obama's and Nancy Pelosi's leadership. After much consideration and many family discussions, the author won the race and began an adventure they never imagined.

The author's personality was challenged when they first ran for Congress, as they were hungry for wisdom and raised to believe we can learn something valuable from every person we meet. They expected to work with normal Americans, but many people had no idea what normal America was like. When they first ran for Congress, the author hired consultants recommended by their senior US senator, John Thune, who advised them to cut their hair, wear natural makeup, and dress appropriately.

The author recounts their experience as a newly elected representative in South Dakota, where they faced an environment where conformity was valued over results. Senator Thune suggested not seeking an appointment on the House Committee on Agriculture, as it could be political baggage to serve on a committee that didn't do the hard work to pass an important policy. The author took his advice and sought other committee assignments, such as advising the Speaker of the House on national conservative policy.

The author's life had focused on agriculture, but she quickly lost her footing in the new environment and relied more on advice than her instincts and experience. She was elected co-president of the freshman class, which gave her a seat at the leadership table. However, she chose not to be on the Agriculture Committee, which impacted South Dakota's agriculture industry and ensured conservation programs were in place to preserve land.

The author reflects on the old guard's approach to politics, where members of Congress show up in committees without doing their own homework and bringing up perspectives that mattered to their constituents. They learned that anger comes from recognizing something is wrong and needs to be made right, and channeling that anger and determination on behalf of others helps them outthink the bastards and be better.

The haters in both parties watched, waiting for the "farm girl" to be a dummy. The author's resolve to fight for the people of her state and outthink the bastards has helped her overcome the haters and become a fighter and smart advocate for her constituents.

Congress members often vote multiple times a day on bills and resolutions, often without understanding the text or the research behind their decisions. This backward way of running the country has been in place for a long time. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to dysfunction and dictatorship, with many Americans at high risk of being controlled. The establishment's response was to make more rules and consolidate power in Washington, focusing on control.
