PREFACE

CHECK ON YOUR JEWISH FRIENDS

On Friday, October 6th, Emilie was on Instagram Live to discuss the devastating events of the 7th, which occurred two and a half hours after thousands of Hamas terrorists invaded Israel. Emilie was unsure of what she was hearing, but she knew it was real and dangerous. Emilie stayed up all night, piecing together stories from the South of Israel, which were the same stories heard from her grandparents about what had happened to them in Europe. Emilie noticed that Emilie had been posting about the tragedy on Instagram for hours, wearing the same outfit. Emilie asked Emilie to go on IG Live to share her experiences and knowledge about the situation. Emilie agreed, and they spent about an hour discussing the events of the 7th, with Emilie providing context on the events. Emilie asked Emilie what she could do to help, and Emilie responded by asking Emilie to stop what she was doing and check on her Jewish friends. Emilie's experience highlights the importance of understanding and supporting those affected by the events of the 7th.

A WORD FROM EMMANUEL

In this Uncomfortable Conversation, the author shares his journey with Noa Tishby, a knowledgeable guide to the current landscape of the Jewish experience and antisemitism. The book aims to educate about another person's perspective, rather than just discussing racism and misunderstandings of the Black struggle. The author acknowledges that the post-October 7th world may have made him feel uncomfortable, as he may be on the wrong side of history by helping a Jewish woman tell her story.

The tension between the Black and Jewish communities is high due to their differing views on the Israel-Palestine struggle. The discomfort comes from navigating the in-between, as the truth lies somewhere in there. The book is about modeling for people how to have conversations, giving someone else the space to speak plainly and communicate their own truth while also examining their own.

The author reflects on the idea that understanding, not agreement, is the objective of this conversation. By becoming aware of someone's experience, it allows for more compassion and compels action. They emphasize that seeing all people as worthy of compassion expands our capacity to create lasting change, making the world a kinder, more tolerant, and more beautiful place.

The author encourages readers to open up their minds, get educated, and, above all, get uncomfortable. By doing so, they hope to create lasting change and create a more kinder, more tolerant, and beautiful world.

A WORD FROM NOA

Antisemitism, or "anti-Jewish racism," is an age-old form of hate and discrimination that has caused the murder of millions of people. It has been a concern for about two thousand years, with the first written accounts dating back to Alexandria, Egypt, in the third century BCE. However, the modern world has become comfortable with antisemitism, with the rise of celebrities like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Steven Spielberg, and Scarlett Johansson. In 2021, the US experienced the biggest spike in anti-Jewish rhetoric, violence, and vandalism since World War II. This includes verbal attacks, physical attacks, desecration of synagogues, neo-Nazi marches, and antisemitic programming spreading on college campuses. The Holocaust has also led to a rise in hate on social media, with 63% of religion-based attacks targeting Jews. The author and two friends, one Jewish and one non-Jewish, aim to increase awareness and understanding of the Jewish experience and its challenges.

Emmanuel Acho, a Primetime Emmy Award-winning digital series, has been a key figure in the cultural conversation for three years. In response to the rise in antisemitism, Emmanuel is now addressing the issue with a Black man, Noa Tishby. Tishby, a prominent Jewish voice on Judaism, Israel, and anti-antisemitism, was appointed Israel's first-ever Special Envoy for Combatting Antisemitism and the Delegitimization of Israel in 2022. She has worked alongside experts in the field, including American ambassador Deborah Lipstadt and UK Lord John Mann. Tishby's mission is to be an unwavering voice for the Jewish people and against hate, and she has been touring the world to do so, giving talks, meeting with communities, writing a bestselling book on the topic, and addressing the UN and Congress twice each.

Tishby approached her book with humility, consulting experts and not aiming to be an exhaustive history of the Jews from Abraham to the present. Instead, she aims to reveal uncomfortable truths about the history, present, and future of the Jewish people. Tishby's mantra is to go deep or go home, and she invites readers to join her in discussing the issue.

PART I

YOU AND ME

HOW THIS BOOK HAPPENED

Noa Tishby and Emmanuel, a black activist, met through their agents while on the hunt for a partner for a passion project. They felt oppressed groups often speak in silos, but they wanted to work together. Noa was inspired by Emmanuel's book, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, which explored racism and the fabric of society through the eyes of a Black man.

Emmanuel and Noa met at Pace, an old-school Laurel Canyon restaurant, where they had met a few months prior. At the restaurant, Emmanuel was questioned about his antisemitic comments, which Emmanuel responded that he had a lot of Jewish friends. Noa was unsure if Emmanuel understood the hurtful and hateful comments, but Emmanuel assured her that he had many Jewish friends.

The two met through their agents, and Emmanuel and Noa began writing their book together, aiming to be a powerful spokesperson for the Jewish people, against anti-semitism, and for social change. The book, which explores the intersection of racism and social change, has been a pivotal moment in Noa's activism and her personal journey.
