The first Dutch version of the Textbook of Epidemiology was published in 1988. Since then, it quickly became the most used epidemiology textbook in the Netherlands used by bachelor, master, and postgraduate students as well as a reference book for epidemiology professionals. Over time, higher education in the Netherlands has increasingly attracted students from abroad and consequently the curriculum partly switched to English. This textbook was thus translated, commissioned by the European Epidemiology Federation (EEF), and endorsed by Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER).
This is the second English edition of our Textbook of Epidemiology and the first edition published by Wiley‐Blackwell. In this edition, we revised all chapters extensively and added a new chapter on systematic reviews with a goal to improve clarity, international accessibility, and relevance. We harmonized core terminology and enriched the book with recent and broadly applicable examples. We also introduced knowledge assessment questions at the end of each chapter for users to check their grasp of the key points.
The author team has also changed since the first edition of the textbook. The current author team – Lex Bouter, Maurice Zeegers, and Tianjing Li – are indebted to all those who have contributed to previous versions of the book, including the former co‐authors Martien van Dongen and Gerhard Zielhuis. We are grateful for Gowri Gopalakrishna and Marino van Zelst who revised the chapter on outbreak investigations; Sander van Kuijk who provided useful comments to many chapters; and Magdalena Schellenberg‐Konopka and Colina Simons who helped us improve Chapter 7. We thank Rachel Haley who drafted the self‐assessment questions and provided edits to draft chapters. Specific administrative support for this book was provided by Erika Bemelmans.
We hope that a wide range of readers, including those in clinical medicine, public health, and allied health professions, will find our book useful, either as textbook in their formal epidemiology training, to immerse themselves single‐handed in the principles of epidemiology, or to refresh their knowledge on specific methodological topics. Please also take a look at the website of the book (www.textbookepidemiology.org), where you can find enrichment materials, short bios of the authors, and corrections. We would also be grateful for your feedback and suggestions, which can help improve the contents of future editions of the book.
