Claiming your piece of your target market can be an uphill battle between you and your competition. That is why many business people use military strategies to gain the upper hand, and influence how they conduct business.
There is an art to war. Before a military is dispatched on a mission, they have to determine what they want to accomplish by using military force. When you are running a business, you are conducting missions that all work to one common goal. You have to define the purpose of these "missions" as well as describe the necessary measures you have to take to make the mission be successful. Like the military, you will have to design the organization so that you are attacking the business world from all sides. For instance, the military has the Air Force for air strikes, the navy for sea battles and the army for foot soldiers. Your business may need a department for sales, a department for production, a department for customer service, a department for marketing, etc.

Introduction

Claiming your piece of your target market can be an uphill battle between you and your competition. That is why many business men and women use military strategies to influence how they conduct business.

You are building a team that you are relying on to make your business a success. If you are ready to make your business as efficient as an army, keep reading.

Structuring Your Business with Military Precision

The military has certain standards that are upheld at all times. The business world has natural equivalents to these standards.

Rules of Engagement

All the world militaries follow a certain code when they engage each other in conflict. These rules are regulated by a central organization such as the United Nations. In the business world, everyone has to operate on the same principles and regulations. There are organizations in place to make sure everyone follows a code of ethics. For the United States, this organization is the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

When a leader in the military is faced with a conflict, they have a clear game plan designed to deal with various types of conflicts. Most of these solutions are found in the military "manual." Most companies have leaders who mock this form of military strategy, because they feel that it hinders companies creativity. However, they are thinking about the big picture. If you have a few options on how to react to a specific conflict, you are saving time and money. Plus, most of the solutions have been vetted. This means that effect of the solution has been taken into consideration. Most of the variables are accounted for when you have a concrete strategy to use against your corporate enemies.

Code of Ethics

While the government uses the SEC to enforce their ethics, a company needs to have their own code of ethics that everyone associated with the company should follow. Before you make a business decision, you should ask these three questions to make sure the action does not violate your code of ethics.

1. Does this action deceive anyone? Is the deception intentional or not?

2. Does this action make it easier for me to gain a privilege that I am not entitled to have?

3. How would I feel if I was on the receiving end of this action? Would I be satisfied by the outcome?

The Mighty Mission Statement

Have you ever wondered why companies and organizations work tirelessly to get their mission statement perfect? A mission statement is the purpose of your business. The military is always on the move so they can perform missions. Each mission has a clear goal. There is a checklist of sorts of things military leaders want a mission to accomplish.

As a business leader, your mission statement has to clearly and concisely declare your objectives and your purpose as a business. All your employees and/or shareholders will have a clear understanding of who you are as a company and where you are going in the future. Objectives should include short and intermediate goals. Your over all mission statement is a prelude to your long term goal.

Mission statements are great tools to have for internal morale. It helps pull all the components of your company into a synergic existence. In other words, everyone is on the same path, and it helps to get to your overall goal faster.

Make Leaders, Not Managers

West Point, one of the most prestigious officers academies in the United States, holds on a set of principles that are used to build leaders. These set of principles can help you turn your managers into future business leaders.

Why should you favor leaders and not managers?
