Walking barefoot over glowing coals. Why is this ancient ritual still so fascinating and topical? And how does it work? Can everybody do it? How do you have to prepare? Can you burn your feet doing this? Who does such a thing and what is the point doing it? The answers to these questions are here in this book, because the author Klaus Eitel Acker is a firewalking coach and has been conducting firewalking seminars for more than 20 years. Readers get a first-hand impression of the preparation for firewalking and a lot of exciting background information. Exciting and easy to read.

The author
Dear Reader,
Thank you for your interest in this book.
I write my books in German and am not quite versed in other languages. If you, as a reader, attach particular importance to the language, you will perhaps be a little surprised at one point or another and I ask for your indulgence for my writing style. However, if the content is what matters most to you, then I hope you enjoy reading it.
My special thanks go to Dieter M. Hörner, with whom I completed my training as a firewalking trainer in 1999. Since that time I have regularly conducted firewalking seminars based on his concept. We are friends in a deep bond and I appreciate him as a brilliant trainer, author and wonderful person.
The stories and descriptions of the participants in this book have been changed and „remixed“ by me in relation to reality in order to preserve confidence and privacy. Of course, the names have also been changed.
This book is for information purposes and is not to be understood as any instructions for a firewalking seminar. Independent practice of the procedures described in this book is your own responsibility. It is neither a therapy in a curative sense nor are the exercises and topics to be understood as a substitute for professional, therapeutic, psychological and medical treatment. The author and publisher do not intend to diagnose or recommend treatment. The content of this book is based on the personal views of the author and does not claim to be scientifically correct.
In the firewalking seminar, the declared goal is to walk unharmed over 700 to 900 degree hot embers. Barefoot, of course! Anything else would be a shame for your shoes.
But there is much more to it. From my point of view, the exercises and topics of the preparation phase are the most valuable and sustainable component in the whole seminar. It is about questions that affect life, that affect your life and that have an impact far beyond firewalking. Because there are probably reasons why you have registered or are interested in this topic. In the seminar I will ask you about this.
Why do you walk on the embers? What do you need this firewalking energy for? What do you want now or in general in your life? What has prevented you from doing what you need to do? What is really important for you in your life? Who are you and who do you want to be?
It would be impossible to leave these questions out, because they are brought by the participants or inevitably come to the surface in the seminar. That is why I will also write about them in this book.
Those who have never been to a firewalking seminar might ask themselves whether they need it at all? Okay, you can undoubtedly live happily without firewalking. But, once you have done that, what else is possible in your life? Imagine you have walked barefoot over burning coals. You have proven to yourself that the seemingly impossible is possible. What else is possible in your life? Do experience what it feels like to leave your comfort zone and enter a new and exciting space with new possibilities.
For me, my first firewalk was an unforgettable key experience. It was indescribable. A short time later I trained as a firewalking coach.
As a coach and trainer, I have been conducting seminars on personality and team development for many years. Summing up, I can say that there is no more authentic and lasting experience than a firewalking seminar.
With this book I would like to invite you to learn more about the subject of firewalking and the background and procedure in a firewalking seminar.
In the first half you get an impression of the seminar process. There you will always find references to background information in the second half of the book. It facilitates the overall understanding if you read this and then go back again. Or you can read this background information first. Then you already have a good basis.
Enjoy reading.
Klaus Eitel Acker
When you’re standing in front of the hot ember, you have a decision to make. To run or not to run! Just a little bit of running won’t do. That’s how it often is in life!
Making decisions, especially when you enter unknown territory, is always a big challenge! Sometimes you would rather dodge or run away from it and later you think ... I wish I had done it back then.
In life, whether in your private or professional life, you have to make decisions all the time. In this way, you give your life new directions and new opportunities - no matter what you decide. Because you are responsible for everything you do, and also for what you don’t do. In any case, you make a difference. Often you are even aware of this and wish you had more strength, more courage, more confidence, more determination. But something seems to be holding you back.
In our heads are borders which do not really exist. But as long as they are in us, they have power over our lives. ... I can’t do that ... I can’t do that anyway ... maybe others, but not me ... we can’t achieve that with this team ... this company is not capable of doing that ... the market doesn’t allow that ... These limits prevent us from achieving what we are capable of. Privately, professionally or in a company.
The fear of burning yourself is the same fear that keeps you away from achieving your goals, desires and dreams! When you run over the embers, you will experience what you are actually capable of.
Firewalking is not a test of courage, but brings an incredible energy boost for your „everyday firewalks“ by the preparation and the topics of the seminar.
Every human being has received enormous abilities at birth. Powers that are reactivated during firewalking and put into practice in order to make them available for daily life. Even after the seminar you can use this energy again and again. This is exactly the goal and the special value of the firewalking seminar, at least in the way I conduct it.
Without a specific goal, participation in the seminar would be just another check on the personal checklist of spectacular experiences. You can do that, but it would be a shame, because the seminar offers so much more for your future. That’s why you should walk on embers for something special. Something that is really important to you and deserves a huge push. The firewalking seminar is then ideally suitable to kick-start the turbo for the achievement of your goals.
In the appendix of this book I will offer you some impulses and help.
They left the motorway a few minutes ago. Usually they talk about all kinds of things in the car. Today, only the navigation system was talking most of the time. They both hang on to their thoughts. Each one in his own way. Pia has even accepted that Alexander has simply switched off the radio, although she usually wants to be asked. Even if he is driving, he can still ask her, Pia thinks. She is glad that he came along at all. She has had the URL www.feuerlaufseminar.de bookmarked for a few months. She had wanted to go to this seminar for a long time. Alex was rather sceptical and had all kinds of objections. He didn’t need such a thing and these esoteric things weren’t his thing. What is esoteric about it, Pia asked herself? She had called the trainer before signing up. It sounded quite down-to-earth the way he had answered her questions. They would do intensive preparation so that everyone would make it. And the trainer will be running first. What’s going to happen? He doesn’t want to burn his feet either.
The trainer had asked her why she wanted to come to the firewalking seminar. She found that interesting and was surprised. At other courses, no one asked her about it. She is quite sure that this seminar will set something in motion. The path to self-employment with a small boutique is still her unfulfilled dream. She wants to create something on her own again. Alex earns a lot of money in the meantime as a sales manager. That shouldn’t be a problem any more. In the past, the financial risk would have been too high, Alex said. Now he says that if she really wants to start a boutique, she can give it a try. But enthusiasm and support look different. She senses that. And if she is honest, it is because of herself that she is still hesitating. Something is holding her back. Ultimately, it probably has to do with her low self-confidence. And that’s exactly what she wants to overcome. She wants to recharge her batteries, today at this seminar.
„Are you looking forward to it?“ she asks, glancing over at Alex. „Yes, I’m very excited,“ he answers after a few seconds and looks ahead intently, although the country road continues dead straight.
„You know Alex, I’m glad you came along with me and that we’re doing this together.“

Alex is convinced that he will go through with it. That would be a laughing matter. He has already mastered quite different challenges, even more so now as a sales manager. If you want something, you can do almost anything. And he has already attended who knows how many seminars. Sales training, moderation and communication, leadership development, 360-degree feedback and all the rest. Let’s see what he’ll do today. Outwardly, he acts confident and doesn’t let on. He does have respect for actually having to walk over hot embers. You can’t walk over really hot embers, can you? He should have done some research on the internet beforehand. But now they are almost there. Only two more kilometres to go. He’ll watch everything closely and won’t let himself being talked into anything. But he doesn’t want to go home a loser. Especially not even to Pia. Actually, he has always taken the position that he can do everything and knows everything. Pia wanted to do it at all costs and didn’t let up. This time she took the lead. That is unusual for him.

Hannah has been looking forward to the firewalking seminar for weeks. As a Reiki trainer, she is convinced that there are forces for which we do not yet have a name. Because what cannot be measured has no place in the scientific and orthodox medical view. She knows this scepticism and rejection very well from her own experience. Today she will have a new experience. She will prove to herself that she can walk over burning coals. Of course it will work, she is convinced of that. It’s all a question of mental alignment. She has heard a lot about it, and her friend Karin has been to this seminar several times. She had met Karin at a Reiki meeting a few years ago and heard from her first-hand how extraordinary this experience is. Karin said it was such a wonderful source of strength that she comes back to from time to time. Like going to a petrol station. She has also registered for this seminar. It’s nice that they will meet here.

The low-slung old Golf II with the young men was the first one to arrive at the seminar house. The bass speakers could be heard from far away. Almost simultaneously they get out and look around. Yawning, they are stretching after the drive with their arms raised. Cool, Jesse thinks, and slams the driver’s door. The other two casually fish their sports bags out of the boot. Jesse has always wanted to know how a firewalking seminar works. Just out of interest. At some point he had brought up the subject in the pub in the evening. Jimmy, whose real name is Fabian, was immediately hooked and registered all three of them for the seminar without further ado. He is a wiry, well-trained guy who has already climbed several mountains. He is always enthusiastic about new challenges and is quick to get down to business. He has also done bungy jumping. He said a parachute jump and a firewalk are currently on his agenda. The others admire him for his determination and courage. They would like to be like him. Especially Micha, who is always there when the others have come up with something new. He probably wouldn’t do anything like that on his own, and he sometimes has to overcome himself to keep up. But his standard saying is - I’m in.

Since Christa’s husband had died two years ago, her life has changed a lot. Even that half year before he died had taken a lot out of her. They never had a large circle of acquaintances, and yet she was happy in her limited world. But that world has been shattered. In the meantime, she feels the loneliness and knows that she has to do something. Otherwise nothing will change. She can wait a long time and continue to bury herself. No, she wants to put an end to that now. She wants to change her life and reach out to other people. But that is difficult for her. Today even more than before. But she has decided to become active, and for that she needs a real push.
She didn’t even tell her colleague about this firewalking seminar , although she always says do something and go out and meet people. Her colleague would probably have been wide-eyed. But it would have been unpleasant for her to reveal herself. Because when asked how she was, she always answered ... well, it has to go on. Deep in her soul she feels something like fear. Fear of life. Afraid to say, here I am ... this is me and all the more ... this is what I want. She is a little proud that she signed up for the seminar. She still doesn’t know where this spontaneous impulse came from.

One by one, the participants arrive at the seminar house. It is in the middle of nowhere. Without the route directions, Siegfried would not have found his way here so well, because there is no sat nav on his motorbike. He left the fat car in the garage. In his motorbike gear, he doesn’t look like the big boss, although he is aware that he can hardly cover up his business-like appearance. He has resolved not to reveal anything about his position. When he called the trainer, he said that in his seminar all participants introduce themselves only by their first names. Everything else remains a private matter. And he jokingly said that no matter who you are or what you have achieved, the temperature of the embers does not change by a single degree. Okay, Sigi thought that was good. Especially that the coach didn’t ask any more questions. Sigi knows that his career won’t do him any good today, and it’s not supposed to. He just wants to get this special kick for his future, because in six months he’ll be finished. Then he will be a private citizen, as he always says.
He wants to change his life completely and make a hard cut. His circle of acquaintances will also change, because many so-called friendships have a strong business basis. He could feel lately that fewer people were seeking his closeness. And anyway, why should he move around the golf course in future with people he doesn’t like at all. He is looking forward to his new freedom. And that’s also why he signed up for this seminar here and not for some high-level event across the pond. He is looking for more closeness to the ground, warmth and perhaps a partner who doesn’t just want his money. Life in this league has made him lonely, although he has never been alone. He suffers most from his realisation that he has lost confidence. And that’s exactly what you can’t buy, because it would have the stark opposite effect.
* * *
Britta and her son arrive just in time. She had phoned the trainer before the seminar and talked about her son’s problem. Phil, a 17-year-old teenager is always being redlined by his classmates, for whatever reason. Britta said that was already bullying. But to openly address the issue at school did not seem to her to be very effective. Instead, she would like to strengthen Phil’s personality and self-confidence so that he can assert his own place. With the firewalk, he would be able to do something that his classmates cannot show. This will certainly help him, and he doesn’t even have to tell about it. It is enough for him to know inside what he can manage.
When Phil gets out of the car, he looks like other teenagers his age. Except that he would also pass for a 15-year-old. Maybe that’s one of the reasons for his unwanted outsider role? In 20 years, he will be pleased about that, if he still seems younger then.

The seminar room is set up, the wood has been ordered, the fire brigade has been informed about the seminar, the fire walk mobile phone has network access, the fire warden arrives around 7 pm, the seats in the restaurant are reserved ... Shovel, rake, gloves, everything there. The trainer ticks off his checklist point by point again. He knows how important professional preparation is. Okay, now the participants can come.
There is still more than an hour to go. He opens the folder with his seminar concept and goes through all the important stages of today, as if in time lapse. This is his own, very special preparation for the seminar. He looks forward to each and every participant. Great weather this Saturday, although there is no bad weather for a firewalk anyway. He gets the wood to burn in any weather. He has never had to cancel a firewalk because of the weather. No matter if it was snowing or raining. The only reason that would prevent a fire from being lit would be a storm. The sparks could be carried far and uncontrolled, and that would indeed be a no-go. Fortunately, that has never happened. In his early years as a trainer, he had also offered firewalking seminars in midsummer. Now he only does it in spring and late autumn when there are no dry leaves on the trees.
Outside, the first car pulls up. The coach turns the music down a bit and goes to the door. „I’m glad you’re here. Did you find your way here okay?“
„Yes, thanks to the directions, it went well. Otherwise we would have had to search. The sat nav seemed a bit overwhelmed.“ The trainer replies with a laugh, „You’ve already managed the most difficult exercise.
They look curiously into the seminar room. All 16 chairs in the semicircle are still free.
„There you can hang up your things and put your bags in the cloakroom. Choose the nicest place. Coming early ensures good seats.“
One by one the other participants arrive. On time and without stress, as it said in the seminar confirmation. Some put on more comfortable clothes. With the exception of Karin, everyone is finally sitting on their chairs and looking expectantly around expectantly. They have already inspected the outside area through the windows. Apart from a large meadow, there is nothing to be seen.
Karin immediately hugged the trainer and has been talking like a waterfall ever since. That she is really happy to be here again and what has changed in her life since the last time. Hannah, sitting next to Karin’s empty chair, follows the dialogue with particular interest. The two women had been talking for a long time outside the seminar house before Hannah came in.
Phil asks if any other young people are coming. „Not this time.“ He continues to look at the coach.
„Are you okay with that?“
„Yeah, it was just a question.“
„Who comes to your firewalking seminars?“ asks Christa.
„Quite mixed, like today. There are also always young people among them.
„What was your youngest participant?“
„The youngest fire runner was a 6-year-old girl. She really wanted to run. Children don’t really need to do that. They are still completely in their centre and connected to the universe. She was fully involved and ran over the embers several times holding her mother’s hand, she was so excited. And her mother was completely perplexed. She had asked me beforehand if it would bother her to bring her daughter because she had no care taking for her. She thought the little one would somehow occupy herself and play in a corner or fall asleep. But she wanted the firewalk,“ says the coach with a laugh.
The participants look around a little uncertainly and slide back and forth on their chairs. Of course, everyone is a little excited. The room is now acoustically filled only by the soft music. Silence returns and obviously no one wants to interrupt the silence with their words.
They look expectantly at the trainer. He sits calmly on his chair, smiles and looks the participants in their eyes sequentially. He knows how excited they are, now that it is about to start. Apparently they accept his calmness, and their movements now also become less until they are completely relaxed in their chairs. At least according to appearances.
He stands up, walks slowly to the trainer’s table and selects the opening music from the prepared playlist. The air seems to literally crackle and the instant silence is carried by the slow rhythms of the music.
Turning to the participants again, he begins to speak calmly. „It is Saturday, 14 November, 2:00 p.m., here in this beautiful place, which is ideally suited for this grandiose experience - firewalking. Hello everyone. It’s good to have you here. I am looking forward to the next hours with you and would like to acknowledge your courage. Thank you for your trust.
My name is Klaus and I have been running firewalking seminars for over 20 years. Tonight we will again walk over the embers according to this proven concept. It will be an unforgettable experience for all of us. Of that I am quite sure. I can already see it in your faces and in your eyes.
We will prepare intensively for the run over the embers. And then everyone will make it. I will pay attention to every single participant and will be at your side. That’s why I prefer small groups, because then I can accompany you more intensively.
You will all walk over 700 to 900 degree embers tonight. You will be able to do this because you want to and because we are intensely focused on this goal. You were born with these resources. And we will connect to that again today, like treasure hunters rediscovering what is there.
Please leave your professions, your titles, your roles outside the door for this evening. You will not change the temperature of the ember by a single degree. That’s why it’s enough if everyone introduces him or herself by their first name.“
In turn, everyone tells the first name.
„Hello Sigi, I’m glad you’re here. I’m looking forward to spending the evening with you. ... Jesse, great, you’re absolutely right here. Otherwise our paths wouldn’t have crossed in this way. ... Christa, I’m glad. You will be able to do it, because there is a part of you that firmly believes you can. Even if you don’t feel it yet, this part is already working hard to activate your power.
Christa still seems a bit uncertain and thinks, ... hopefully, because I want to make it today. I’m sure the coach will help me. And if I need help, I’ll just ask him.
After the trainer has once again greeted each participant individually, he asks: „Who has ever done a firewalk?“ Apart from Karin, another participant raises her hand. „I ask the repeaters to work particularly hard. Please don’t let there be any carelessness. Every firewalk is new again.“ With these words, he looks at the repeaters one after the other and they nod in agreement.
Some participants have been coming to his firewalking seminar again and again for years, to their energy filling station, as some say. They have experienced and witnessed how they can use this firewalking energy in their everyday lives and what it has moved in their lives.
„I am looking forward to this exciting evening with you and I have prepared intensively for tonight’s event. We are running according to a successful concept that has already been used by many thousands of participants to run safely over the embers.
My first contact with firewalking was more than 40 years ago. Back then, as a spectator, at a speleologists‘ meeting, when three young men practised firewalking. I could hardly believe what I had seen with my own eyes. After that, it was clear to me that if I ever had the chance, I would run. And years later, in the course of preparing for a trade fair, I got this opportunity quite unexpectedly. I ran over the embers. It was just tremendous and indescribable. It is one of the most important milestones in my life. After that, I decided to accompany many people on this wonderful experience and trained as a trainer. I have now been offering firewalking seminars every year for over 20 years, and I am still thrilled by the experience myself. Just like you tonight.
Perhaps you have already asked yourself the question, since when have people been walking through embers and fire? Is this an invention of our time or did it already exist in the past? And above all, why?
--> see Appendix: Firewalking history
The reason why people run over red-hot coals is very diverse. As a rule, it is always to generate strength and courage or self-confidence for upcoming tasks and challenges. You will know why you have come to this firewalking seminar today. Later, in an exercise, I will ask you to answer this question for yourself.
In earlier eras, running over embers was reserved for a selected few. At the end of the 20th century, it arrived here in Europe as an opportunity for everyone. Like many other new things, firewalking was first offered at management seminars in the USA. Later, they were also offered in Europe and Germany.
Firewalking is not an invention of modern times. Since human recollection the transformative abilities of fire have been known and are being used again today. This ancient ritual, practiced in many cultures and religions around the world for thousands of years, is still as relevant as ever. That is why you are here.“ Some participants nod and all listen with interest.
„The first written records come from India and are about 4000 years old. Many special people have since dared and mastered this experience, just as you do today. Firewalking was performed in many cultures as an initiation ritual and was reserved for selected individuals. Tribal leaders, medicine men, warriors or people before entering adulthood or a special group. Today you too can experience this special day and become part of this great community of firewalkers.
It is quite simple. Anyone with the right preparation and inner attitude can do it. We will prepare ourselves intensively and I will accompany you mindfully until you are ready to walk safely over the embers. And then it will be your decision, your success, your firewalk, and you can do it. Enjoy this experience for yourself. Each of you is absolutely right here. Otherwise our paths would not have met in this way. This is your seminar, for you will walk across the embers tonight with enthusiasm. Anyone who wants to will be able to. Really anyone! It certainly works, because otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here.
A little fear is completely normal. In the course of preparation, your fear will turn into inner security. The fear of getting burned is the same fear that keeps you from achieving your goals, desires and dreams! As you run over the embers, you will experience what you are actually capable of. Once you have done that, what else is possible in your life?
Tonight you’ll be in exactly the condition you need to walk barefoot on the embers. That is exactly what I am here for you today. You will walk across the embers unharmed, because there is a part of you that firmly trusts you to do so. You will experience that you can do more than you may have believed before.
The motivating words benefit the participants. They seem more relaxed than at the beginning of the seminar. The trainer pays attention to the body language and posture of the participants. They are a reflection of the change that has already occurred and the orientation towards today’s goal.
„By the way, we have set up our mask drop-off point again today, out there in front of the door.“ The trainer points to the door with his hand and the participants look at him eagerly to see what that might be.
„We have all created a mask in the course of our lives. This mask is important! It offers us protection, for example from emotional injuries. Through this mask we show the fake identity of our personality. We try to present ourselves as we want to be seen and as we want to be. And we do this consciously or unconsciously and with more or less success. Real and lasting change happens behind this mask, in the original core of your unique personality. Deep inside your soul, where only you can be and where you are the way you are. This is exactly the part that you protect, cover and seal off with your mask. In order to take off this mask a little bit, you need trust. Trust in your surroundings, in your fellow human beings, in yourself and in what you want to do today.
--> see Appendix: Masks and onion skins
I ask you to be as honest and truthful today as is good and appropriate for you. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone, neither to the other participants nor to me. Therefore, I offer you the opportunity to symbolically take off your mask outside. At least the outermost mask or masks. We have many more masks underneath and that is good and helpful in life - historically grown, so to speak. I deliberately asked you only for your first name and did without a round of introductions, as in some other seminars. Because even your profession or your status are already part of your mask.“
Sigi knows only too well what the coach is talking about. He wants to throw away his masks. That is one of his most important goals.
„You are welcome to take your mask back with you after the seminar. But most participants don’t want it after the seminar or want to change it. I think you feel what I mean. Please be as honest, open and trusting as you are OK with today. I will do the same. Anything else would be a masked ball and giving away an opportunity. Okay? So let’s continue to prepare for this wonderful day.“ You can see in the eyes of the participants that they have understood what it is all about.
„A few more words on the organisational side. We will take a break every now and then, depending on the preparation sequences.“ The coach informs about the rough sequence until the run over the embers.
„To make this seminar a success on all levels, I ask you to follow these few rules.
Within the preparation we will deal with the meaning of our words and thoughts and you will then know yourself why I am already putting this rule into the room.
It is, please watch your thoughts and words, especially in the break conversations. Let’s talk about what we want! Think about what you want to achieve today. Everything else robs you of energy. Words like burn, or I once heard that ... take away your energy unnecessarily. Banish them from your consciousness and give the other participants the chance to be spared from these thoughts and words.
Rule number two. Please do not drink alcohol until the firewalk. We will be going to dinner around 6pm. Please remember this in the restaurant. At some point during the preparation, a firewalk look sets in and I want to be able to distinguish it clearly from the alcohol look,“ he says with a wink.
Rule number three. Do all the exercises. Every exercise does something and I didn’t include them randomly in the course of the preparation, but with deliberation. After all, this is not a cooking duel, you want to walk over 900-degree embers tonight unscathed.
