The Happiness of Pranks
is a Book of best story collection.
More than 80 years ago, in 1939, Vibhutibhushan Banerjee wrote the novel Aranyak. At the beginning of the novel, Vibhutibhushan wrote a two-page introduction or prologue, then the main novel was written in 18 chapters.
In the beginning, the narrator of this novel Satyacharan (who is actually Vibhutibhushan himself) is unemployed. He is looking for work in Kolkata city. He then got a job through a friend in a zamindari business in a jungle area of Jharkhand. The task is to collect people in the forest under a zamindar and sell their land, lease it, etc. At first, I felt lonely in the unfamiliar environment and people, but gradually I liked the jungle of urban Satyacharan.
He writes, 'As the days went by, the enchantment of the jungle gradually overtook me.' I can't imagine a different life with friends, library, theatre, cinema, music chat. In this situation, where I came for the sake of a few bucks of work, I have never imagined such a lonely place.'
When the reader first comes to this secluded place, he finds it described as - 'pea-fields on either side of the railway line. As the cool evening air smelled of fresh peas, it seemed to me that the life I was about to embark on would be a lonely one. As lonely as this winter's evening, As this bountiful desert and that distant blue forest'.

'Aranyak' is not a travelogue or exactly a diary. But the novel sometimes feels like that in places.
