Beschreibung

On board the French ship Mexique in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, two boys become fast friends. Driven from Spain by civil war, Oriol and Xavi join an exodus of refugees traveling to Mexico. The mysterious Cap¬tain Giloc, the magic of music, first love, and a terrible incident would mark their fates forever. Their voyage carried stories of exile, friendship, loss, love, authoritaria¬nism, pain, sick-ness, fantasy, and loneliness. The authors, descendants of such exiles, gathered a selection of true testimonies given by Spanish Republicans in Mexico and used them to write this emotive fiction for chil¬dren and adults. The Mexique won the Timón de Oro literary award in 2010, organized by Mexico's De-partment of the Navy and the Cultural Institute of the State of Mexico.

PRESENTATION

The story takes place on the Atlantic Ocean, on board the French ship Mexique, where two boys, Oriol and Xavi, exiled from Spain due to the Civil War, become fast friends. Events brimming with emotion mark their fates during their voyage. The now-famous violinist Oriol Claramunt has an unexpected encounter that makes him remember that past, both dark and beautiful, when his love for music bloomed.

In 1939, after the war was lost, the Falangist’s revenge was as terrible as it was ruthless. Thousands of Republicans sought refuge in France to save their own lives, though they were packed into refugee camps there. This exodus caused trouble for the French, who were already threatened by the Nazi expansion and were on the verge of entering the Second World War. Several countries in Latin America helped deal with this crisis by giving refuge to these lost souls. Led by its president Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico was one of the nations that opened its doors to these men, women, and children who were asea in a limbo of contempt. The French ship Mexique (named so entirely by coincidence) was one of the transatlantic carriers that evacuated the exiles. It sailed from Bordeaux, France, to Veracruz, Mexico.

Although the tale told in this story is fictitious, and its events are imaginary, it is based on actual historical facts, whose dates, places, and details were taken from reliable sources. Personal statements given by Spanish exiles inspired the authors, who consulted files in the Historical Archive at Alcalá de Henares in Spain, Notebooks published by Fundación Españoles en el Mundo at the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library, and documents from the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in France.

The narrative spins a story that shows endearing situations involving issues that will always be current, such as friendship, love, passion for music, shame, war, death, and platonic love.

The characters in The Mexique, the Ship of Hope are filled with light and shadow as they face dilemmas, sailing through a world of feelings as turbulent as the ocean crossed by the ship. The story tries to bring particular messages to the reader, such as the importance of teaching children to speak out when something happens to them and not keep quiet in fear of being shamed or badmouthed.
