FOREWORD

The inspiration behind The Path of the Paws came from a simple yet powerful source. As I created the Spirit Animal Oracle Card Deck, I was blessed with an outpouring of kind words and requests for more guidance on how to work with spirit animals and their wisdom. It became clear that many people were eager to deepen their connection with these animal guides, and I felt a calling to share more of what I had learned on my own journey into shamanism and the powerful world of spirit animals.

I crafted the card deck with deep love and care, infusing it with the lessons I’ve received from these extraordinary beings. Spirit animals touched me profoundly, helping me heal, grow, and find direction at critical points in my life. It became my mission to share this knowledge with others in a creative way—through these cards and now, this book.

This book is more than just a guide for those who own The Path of the Paws card deck. While I highly recommend getting a copy of the deck to deepen your experience, this book stands on its own as a reflective guide to the messages of spirit animals. Whether you are exploring the courage of the bear, the transformative power of the butterfly, or the loving energy of the doe, you’ll discover how these animals can bring insight to all areas of your life.

Spirit animals have a universal message for everyone, and their wisdom is not reserved for a select few. They offer guidance in relationships, career choices, health, and most importantly, in how to reconnect with our inner selves. Through this book, you will learn how to listen to the quiet voice of your intuition and understand the lessons that nature, through these animals, has to offer.

As you read, I invite you to stay curious, embrace the discovery of new wisdom, and allow yourself to be guided by the animal spirits that cross your path. There is so much more waiting for you as you begin this journey—trust in the process, and open yourself to the transformative magic of spirit animals.

I’m so honored that you’ve picked up this book, and I encourage you to dive in with an open heart and mind. Let the animals guide you.

With love and gratitude,

Carolin

1.0. WHAT ARE SPIRIT ANIMALS?

1.1. THE ESSENCE OF SPIRIT ANIMALS

Spirit animals are beings that hold deep spiritual meaning, acting as guides, protectors, and teachers in our lives. From a shamanic and animistic perspective, spirit animals are not merely symbols or metaphors, but actual spirits that inhabit the natural world, existing alongside us in both the physical and spiritual realms.

Shamans say that spirits are energies that have consciousness and intelligence, but no bodily manifestation like humans. We can connect with them in altered states and are more likely to perceive them in complete darkness.

Spirit animals in the West are mostly believed to be the spiritual energy of animals that can help us navigate our journey in life, offering guidance, wisdom, and insight when we are open to their teachings.

In the shamanic traditions I am familiar with, a spirit animal, such as the wolf, is believed to embody the essence of all wolf spirits. It is not just one individual spirit, but rather it holds the wisdom and characteristics of all wolves. This concept is more general and not specific. Anyone can connect with the spirit of the wolf, but the strength of that connection depends on several factors. Some people may be guided by one specific spirit animal throughout their lives, while others may be guided by several. In Mongolian tradition, it is believed that the more spirits a shaman connects with, the more powerful they may become—though this also depends on the type of spirits they are connecting with. Personally, I believe that the quality of the relationship is what truly matters, much like in real life.

The concept of spirit animals is rooted in animism, a belief system that holds that all living things—animals, plants, rocks, and elements like water or fire—possess a spirit or consciousness. Animism teaches that we are all interconnected with the natural world. The connection between humans and animals is seen as sacred, with animals being seen as wisdom keepers who can reveal truths about our lives. For example, in many indigenous cultures, if a person is struggling with a particular challenge, they might seek guidance from a shaman who can journey to the spirit world and connect with their power animal. This animal spirit can offer insights into the person's situation and provide guidance on how to move forward.

Shamanism is one of these forms of animism, where people believe that everything is alive and everything has a spirit. In this book, I won’t go into great detail about the differences between animism, shamanism, and other magical traditions, but it’s important to note that shamanism is something very specific. Not everything that is animistic, such as many indigenous cultures or Native American traditions, is necessarily shamanistic.

In shamanic traditions, spirit animals are seen as emissaries of the spirit world, communicating messages to us through dreams, visions, meditations, and, of course, shamanic journeys. It’s also important to recognize that not all shamanic traditions believe in spirit animals. Many shamanic practices place a strong emphasis on working with the spirits of the ancestors. Regardless of the specific tradition, shamans work closely with the spirits to gain wisdom and healing for their communities. Through rituals, ceremonies, and journeys into the spiritual realms, they connect with the spirit world to access knowledge that can guide decision-making, healing, and growth.

In many indigenous cultures, spirit animals are honored as protectors and helpers. Native American tribes, for example, have long recognized the importance of animal guides in their spiritual practices. Each animal is believed to embody unique characteristics, strengths, and lessons, and each person may be connected to a specific animal, known as their "power animal" or "totem." In these traditions, spirit animals are not merely passive entities but active participants in the spiritual journey of the individual, offering insight, protection, and support in times of need.

Whether viewed through the lens of shamanism, animism, or indigenous wisdom, spirit animals are universally understood as guides who walk with us on our life’s path. They are not distant or abstract concepts but living, breathing entities whose energy can profoundly influence our personal development, healing, and understanding of the world around us.

1.2. THE ROLE OF SPIRIT ANIMALS ON OUR LIFE’S PATH

Guiding and Supporting Us

Spirit animals walk with us on our life’s path, offering support and guidance at every turn. They are not just symbolic figures; they are deeply interconnected with our personal journey, acting as spiritual companions who offer wisdom, protection, and insight when we need it most. In times of joy, spirit animals celebrate with us, reminding us of the beauty and magic in the world around us.

Imagine a young woman who has just gotten engaged. Overwhelmed with joy, she takes a walk in the woods to reflect on her happiness. As she smiles up at the sunlight filtering through the leaves, a butterfly with wings of iridescent blue lands softly on her shoulder. In that moment, the butterfly seems to embody the lightness and joy she feels, a vibrant symbol of transformation and new beginnings. This encounter reinforces her happiness and reminds her of the beauty and magic woven into life's journey.

And during times of challenge or hardship, they offer their strength, showing us that we are not alone and that we have the tools to overcome whatever we face. A man struggling with a serious illness feels overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. He worries about his family, his finances, and his own mortality. One evening, while sitting alone in his backyard, he notices a hawk circling overhead. Its powerful wings carry it effortlessly against the strong winds, a picture of resilience and unwavering focus. He feels a sense of calm wash over him as he connects with the hawk's energy, recognizing his own inner strength and determination to face the challenges ahead. The hawk becomes a symbol of hope, reminding him that even in the face of adversity, he has the power to soar above his fears.

Each spirit animal embodies unique qualities and energies, and these can resonate with us at different stages of our lives. For example, the steadfast bear may appear during times of introspection, encouraging us to tap into our inner strength, while the swift and graceful butterfly might emerge when transformation is needed, guiding us through personal growth. Whether it’s a moment of confusion, a decision that needs to be made, or a deep need for healing, spirit animals offer a steady hand to hold, illuminating the path ahead with their wisdom.

These animals serve as protectors, warding off negative energies and helping us navigate the often-complex emotional and spiritual landscape of life. By connecting with them, we invite their wisdom into our lives, allowing us to better understand our purpose, release fears, and step more fully into who we are meant to be. Their presence serves as a reminder that we are never truly alone, as the natural world is always here to help us along our journey.

Empowerment through Connection

The connection to spirit animals is more than just a form of guidance; it is a powerful way to tap into deeper layers of ourselves, unlocking our intuition, strength, and potential. When we connect with these animals, we access parts of our own being that may otherwise remain hidden— qualities like resilience, creativity, wisdom, and courage. Spirit animals mirror these traits back to us, helping us realize that the power we seek is already within us.

By cultivating a relationship with spirit animals, we begin to trust our intuition more fully. Their teachings remind us that the answers we seek are not always outside of us, but often reside within. As we grow in our connection with these animal spirits, we find ourselves becoming more attuned to the subtle messages of the world around us, whether it’s the guidance found in our dreams, in the natural world, or through the simple yet profound whispers of our own hearts.

For example a woman felt stuck in a career that no longer fulfilled her. She longed for a change but felt paralyzed by fear and indecision. Seeking clarity, she began meditating on her spirit animal, the fox, which she had encountered in a dream. The fox, known for its cunning and adaptability, encouraged her to trust her instincts and explore new possibilities.

As she deepened her connection with the fox, she started noticing synchronicities in her daily life - a chance conversation with a friend about a new career path, a book about entrepreneurship that seemed to jump off the shelf at her, a sudden surge of courage to sign up for a workshop on starting a business.

These subtle signs, once easily overlooked, now felt like clear messages guiding her forward. She realized that the fox wasn't giving her the answers, but rather helping her tune into her own inner wisdom and the guidance that had always been present within her. Empowered by this realization, she took a leap of faith, quit her job, and started her own successful business, a testament to the power of trusting her intuition and the guidance of her spirit animal.

Spirit animals also help us navigate both our inner and outer worlds. On an internal level, they help us confront our fears, embrace our shadow, and heal from past wounds. On an external level, they help us make decisions, interact with others, and face the challenges life throws our way. Whether we are seeking clarity, courage, or calm, spirit animals offer the support we need to stay aligned with our true selves.

Through this deepened connection, spirit animals empower us to step into our full potential. By listening to their wisdom and allowing their energy to guide us, we uncover the strength to face life’s obstacles with resilience, the courage to move forward, and the trust in ourselves to know that we are capable of navigating any challenge that comes our way. This empowerment is not about changing who we are, but about rediscovering and embracing the powerful beings we were always meant to be.

1.3. WHY WORKING WITH SPIRIT ANIMALS?

A Million Reasons Why

This chapter provides just a glimpse into the countless ways spirit animals can support and guide you on your journey. There are a million reasons why working with spirit animals is powerful—they offer guidance in every area of life, from personal growth and relationships to career, health, and beyond. Whether you’re facing challenges or seeking clarity, their wisdom can help you unlock your full potential, navigate obstacles, and understand yourself on a deeper level. Spirit animals remind you that there are endless possibilities for transformation and healing, and with their support, you can move through life with purpose, resilience, and a renewed sense of strength. I truly believe that by connecting with them, you’ll find answers, insights, and empowerment in every aspect of your life.

Personal Growth

Spirit animals offer guidance on your journey of personal growth, providing you with unique insights into the parts of yourself that need attention, healing, or expansion. By connecting with these powerful beings, you gain access to their wisdom, which helps you understand who you are at a deeper level. Each spirit animal carries specific traits and teachings that align with different aspects of your life. For example, the lion might help you embrace your courage, encouraging you to speak up in situations where you normally would hold back. Or, the owl could assist you in developing your intuitive wisdom, helping you trust your gut feelings when making tough decisions, just like when I used the owl's guidance to trust myself when I was considering a new career path.

Spirit animals not only guide you in times of difficulty but also support you in seeing new perspectives. They encourage you to step out of old patterns, helping you embrace growth and change. When you feel stuck, unsure, or limited, these animals offer a fresh outlook, showing you the bigger picture and helping you understand the lessons within your challenges. Take, for example, the butterfly, which might appear to guide you through a time of transformation, helping you let go of old habits or ways of thinking that no longer serve you. I recall a time when I was in a rut, repeating the same unhealthy patterns, and the butterfly appeared, reminding me that transformation is possible if I embrace the process.

Their guidance supports you in overcoming obstacles by bringing you the strength to persevere, the clarity to see the way forward, and the compassion to accept yourself during the process. For instance, the elephant spirit can teach you patience and perseverance, helping you navigate through a difficult period in your life with grace. When I faced a series of challenges that felt overwhelming, I called upon the elephant, which reminded me that taking one step at a time is enough to make progress.

Additionally, spirit animals are wonderful teachers when it comes to understanding your personal challenges, whether emotional, mental, or spiritual. They help you navigate these challenges with patience, understanding, and grace, offering you the tools to heal and evolve. The wolf, for example, could help you find your inner pack, teaching you how to foster connections with those who support and uplift you.

Through their wisdom, you gain the awareness to let go of limiting beliefs, self-doubt, and fears, and step into a more empowered and authentic version of yourself. Just as the snake sheds its skin to grow, you too can shed old beliefs and make room for new, more empowering ones, just as I did when I embraced the wolf’s guidance to trust my inner circle and let go of toxic relationships.

Or imagine a talented painter who struggles with intense self-doubt, constantly criticizing her work and comparing herself to other artists. She feels drawn to the spirit of the eagle, a symbol of freedom and expansive vision. As she connects with the eagle's energy, she begins to see her art through a new lens, appreciating its unique beauty and the emotions it evokes. The eagle's soaring perspective helps her rise above the confines of self-criticism and embrace her own artistic voice. With newfound confidence, she shares her work with the world, finding joy in the creative process and inspiring others with her vulnerability and authenticity.

Healing and Transformation

One of the most powerful aspects of working with spirit animals is their ability to facilitate deep healing and transformation. Power animals are not just guides, but also healing companions who help you release blockages, heal past wounds, and restore balance in your life. When you invite spirit animals into your life, they support you in clearing emotional and energetic debris, enabling you to regain clarity and align with your true purpose.

Spirit animals can assist you in transforming areas of your life where you may feel stuck or blocked. For example, the butterfly might come to you when it’s time for a personal transformation, helping you shed old layers and embrace new beginnings.

Someone who has struggled with low self-esteem might experience the butterfly's presence and feel encouraged to release the self-doubt that has been holding them back, embracing the courage to step into new opportunities and trust their worth. The eagle may also appear to guide you through a spiritual awakening or help you break free from limiting thought patterns. Picture someone who has been stuck in a job that no longer serves them, and the eagle’s energy empowers them to rise above fear and take bold steps toward a career change.

Whether you are struggling with past trauma, self-sabotage, or confusion about your life’s direction, spirit animals offer the insight needed to heal, grow, and become more of who you are meant to be.

Take, for example, the wolf, which might appear to help you navigate relationship dynamics. It could encourage you to trust in your instincts and loyalty, showing you how to set healthy boundaries or lean on your support system when you feel isolated. The deer might help someone open their heart and embrace vulnerability, allowing them to heal from past hurts and form deeper, more authentic connections with others.

Their wisdom often brings clarity to areas of your life that require change, whether it’s in relationships, career, or self-awareness. A spirit animal like the wolf might help you navigate relationship dynamics by teaching you about loyalty and the power of community, encouraging you to lean on your support system when needed. On the other hand, the deer might help you open your heart and embrace vulnerability in your connections with others. For example, a person who has been afraid to express their emotions in a relationship might feel the deer’s presence, encouraging them to be more open and compassionate.

Power animals assist you in aligning with the flow of life, encouraging you to release what no longer serves you and make room for transformation and healing.

For example, someone who has struggled with feelings of lack and financial insecurity might encounter the buffalo, a powerful spirit animal known for its deep connection to abundance and the Earth's resources. The buffalo teaches that abundance is not just about money, but about the resources and support that are always available to us if we align with the flow of life. By working with the buffalo, they might release their fears around scarcity, recognizing that there is always enough and that their needs will be met in unexpected ways. Working with spirit animals reminds you that your journey is a process of growth, and through their guidance, you can unlock the strength and wisdom needed to move forward with clarity and purpose.

Facing Life’s Challenges

Life is full of challenges, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or lost when you face difficulties. Spirit animals provide a source of strength and resilience during these tough times, offering guidance when you feel uncertain, stuck, or defeated. I’ve experienced it myself many times in life— their teachings arrive just when I need them most, giving me the strength to grow from difficult situations. For example, when I faced a tough decision about moving to a new country, I turned to the owl spirit, which helped me see beyond the obvious and trust my intuition. I highly recommend using the tools presented in this book, such as journeying or working with the cards, to connect with your spirit team whenever you face challenges. They offer solutions you might never have expected.

When you encounter hardships in relationships, career, or personal development, spirit animals can guide you with clarity and help you find clever solutions. For instance, the bear, known for its inner strength, can provide grounding and protection during emotional upheaval. I remember during a time when I felt lost after a personal loss, the bear appeared to remind me of my strength and ability to protect my heart. The bear might also help you protect your boundaries in times of danger, like when you’re in a toxic environment or dealing with difficult people.

The fox may guide you in navigating tricky situations with quick thinking and adaptability. When you face a difficult decision, such as whether to accept a new job or leave a current situation, the fox can help you assess the situation with a clear mind and act swiftly. The fox’s cleverness might help you find a solution you hadn’t considered before, like when I was unsure about a business decision and the fox led me to a new partnership that I had overlooked.

Whether you’re facing a difficult decision or an unexpected obstacle, spirit animals show you the way forward by helping you stay centered, focused, and empowered. You probably already sense where this is going: Each spirit animal has specific resources that can be helpful in certain circumstances.

Spirit animals offer you resilience in the face of adversity. They remind you that you are capable of overcoming whatever comes your way, and that challenges are simply opportunities for growth. For example, when I was struggling with health issues, the eagle spirit came to me, soaring above my concerns and reminding me of my power to rise above adversity. Their teachings help you stay hopeful and proactive, finding creative solutions when the path seems unclear. Their presence encourages you to keep moving forward, knowing that you are not alone and that you have the wisdom and strength within you to handle whatever life brings.

Working with spirit animals reminds you that every challenge you face is part of your greater journey. Through their guidance, you can find the courage to rise above it, transform your circumstances, and step into the next chapter of your life with renewed strength and resilience. Just like when the butterfly guides you through transformation, you’ll emerge stronger, ready for the next phase of your life’s adventure.

1.4. WHAT IS SHAMANISM?

Shamanism is one of the world’s oldest spiritual practices, connecting us to the natural world in profound and healing ways. At its core, shamanism is a spiritual tradition that revolves around the belief in a world filled with spirits—of animals, plants, ancestors, and even natural elements like rocks, trees, and rivers. These spirits are seen as part of an interconnected web of life, influencing and guiding human existence.

The word “shaman” originates from the Tungusic languages of Siberia and is believed to mean “one who knows” or “one who is able to reach into the spiritual world.” Shamans were traditionally considered intermediaries between the physical and spiritual realms, able to journey between these worlds in order to bring healing, wisdom, and guidance to their communities. In many cultures, shamans were also seen as healers, diviners, and spiritual leaders, capable of accessing knowledge from the unseen world.

Shamanism is not confined to any single tradition or culture; it spans across continents and civilizations, from Siberia to Africa, the Americas to Asia. Despite the diversity of practices, the central tenet remains the same: a deep connection to nature, the ability to communicate with the spiritual world, and a reverence for all life forms.

The Role of a Shaman

A shaman’s role is multifaceted. Traditionally, shamans would enter altered states of consciousness—often through drumming, other instruments or the use of sacred plants—to access the spiritual realms. The shaman traditionally was an expert acting as an intermediary between our reality and the spirits. He would seek guidance from spirit beings (including animal guides) and ancestors, perform healing rituals, and even retrieve lost souls or spiritual knowledge to help individuals or communities overcome illness, challenges, or emotional wounds.

Important methods shamans use are:

Journeying: This involves entering a trance-like state to communicate with spirits or access alternate realities.

Extraction: In this practice, shamans remove unwanted or negative energies from a person’s energy body to restore balance.

Soul Retrieval: This technique is used to recover lost or fragmented parts of one’s soul, bringing healing and wholeness.

Ceremonies and Rituals: Culture-specific shamanic ceremonies and rituals are designed to heal, restore balance, and strengthen individuals and communities.

Plant Medicine: The use of plants, such as Ayahuasca, is employed to facilitate healing, spiritual growth, and expanded consciousness.

Divination: Shamans use tools like divination stones to gain insight, guidance, and messages from the spiritual realm.

Astrology: Especially in cultures like China, Mongolia, and Tibet, astrology plays an important role. Shamans and spiritual practitioners may use astrology to understand an individual’s life path, elemental influences, and to guide decisions based on the positioning of celestial bodies, the elements, and other astrological factors.

It’s important to say that the specific practices a shaman uses always depend on their cultural context. Different traditions emphasize one method over another, and some practices might not be found in certain cultures at all. The choice of technique is deeply rooted in the beliefs, customs, and teachings of the specific shamanic tradition. This knowledge is sacred and often passed down orally, meaning it is not something you can read about in books. There were some divination methods I learned during my apprenticeship that are not written down anywhere.

My Personal Journey with Shamanism

My journey into shamanism began in a place far from where I was born. It was in Hawaii that I first felt the call to work with the spirits of nature. There, I encountered the sacred teachings of the land and its spirit animals, which would leave a lasting imprint on my soul. However, it wasn’t until my connection to Mongolian and Siberian shamanism that I fully immersed myself in the ancient practices of shamanism, learning from esteemed shamans who shared their wisdom with me. Their teachings opened my eyes to the deeper mysteries of the world and the immense power that nature offers to those willing to listen.

Through these experiences, I came to understand the true meaning of being a shamanic practitioner—not as someone who has all the answers, but as someone who walks in deep humility, constantly seeking wisdom from the world around them and the spirits that inhabit it. It is this approach to life—an open heart, a willingness to learn, and a connection to the unseen—that I bring into my work today, both as a shaman and as a creator of tools to help others connect with the spiritual world.

Shamanism offers us a path of deep introspection, healing, and alignment with the cycles of nature. It teaches us that we are not separate from the world around us, but an integral part of it. Through shamanic practices, we can find answers to questions that live deep in our souls, access the wisdom of the animals, and heal old wounds that may have been carried through lifetimes. It is through this lens that I invite you to explore the teachings of the spirit animals in this book, as they hold the keys to unlocking your own personal transformation and spiritual growth.

2. THE PATH AND THE PAWS

2.1. UNDERSTANDING THE SOUL’S JOURNEY

Life is often described as a journey, but in this book, we explore the idea of it as a soul’s journey. This journey is not just about physical milestones but about the deep, spiritual process of growth, self-discovery, and transformation. Every step we take is part of our soul’s unfolding, leading us through different phases, challenges, and revelations. The “Path” refers to this ongoing journey of the soul, where we learn, grow, and evolve, often through facing difficulties and celebrating victories.

In a journey asking about the nature of the soul and its purpose, I was shown a profound vision: Before we are born, we are like shining raindrops falling from the branches of trees. The trees were lush, green, and vibrant—like the "Pinheiros" (pine trees) in Portugal. This image revealed something essential: each soul has unique characteristics, purposes, abilities, and strengths even before it enters the physical world. These qualities are already embedded within us, waiting for the right time, place, and circumstances to unfold.

The purpose of the soul is to walk a very specific learning path, perfectly designed for the soul’s inherent gifts and wisdom. There are no coincidences; the soul comes into each lifetime equipped with what it needs to navigate its journey. The soul’s path is tailored to its essence, and all the resources, wisdom, and lessons it carries with it are continually growing and evolving with each life lived.

The soul is not static—it is an eternal force, constantly evolving. While we might seem to forget much of our soul's knowledge when we are reborn, it is always within us. All the wisdom, the love, and the life force we have gathered over countless experiences remain alive inside us, even if it's sometimes veiled by the limitations of our current physical existence. In truth, it is always there, guiding us from within.

The soul’s journey can be seen as a winding road—sometimes straight, sometimes full of twists, but always leading to deeper truths. Our path is personal, filled with lessons we are meant to learn, and it is in these moments of self-reflection and transformation that we often find clarity.

The path is not always easy, but it is always purposeful. Each trial we face, each challenge we overcome, brings us closer to the person we are meant to become. Spirit animals, in this context, are the companions who walk alongside us, guiding and supporting us as we move through the various phases of this journey.

2.2. THE PAWS: SPIRIT ANIMALS WALKING BESIDE YOU

Fortunately, we are never alone on this soul journey. From various shamanic worldviews, I know that we are guided by guardian angels, ongod spirits (the spirits of a shaman in Mongolian shamanism), ancestor spirits, and, of course, spirit animals. In some shamanic traditions, even spirit animals may be seen as ancestor spirits in animal form, so to speak.

The “Paws” are the spirit animals that accompany us on our journey through life. These animals may have been guiding us since birth, or we may come to know them at certain points in our lives. There is no better or worse in the language of spirit animals, as each animal carries its own unique characteristics and strengths. They are active, guiding forces that illuminate our path. By walking beside us, they offer wisdom, protection, and guidance. They are our companions, showing up when we need them most, sharing their teachings, and assisting us as we navigate challenges and celebrate victories.

The way a spirit animal chooses to connect with us is a fascinating mystery! There are many theories, but it often comes down to the idea that we attract the spirit animals we need to support our soul's journey and help us fulfill our purpose.
