Intro

Thank you for choosing my guide! You are on your way to exploring a treasure trove of wonderful places in this beautiful country, dubbed the “Land of the Rising Sun.”

When Japan is mentioned in a conversation, the city of Tokyo often comes up in the discussion. Considered the largest city in the country, Tokyo is shrouded with mystery, beauty, excitement, and history, divided up into 23 wards. Perhaps you have considered visiting this beautiful country and have spotlighted Tokyo as your primary destination. Given the overwhelming attractions in Japan’s capital, you could easily build your travel itinerary around this city alone. I have written and compiled an e-book that comprises over 200 attractions in Tokyo. It has taken me years to be able to discover these rich attractions, and I am constantly finding new places to explore. It is my purpose in this e-book to help guide you as you plan your Japan travel itinerary. Of course, from a reasonable standpoint, you cannot pack everything (I have covered in this book) into your itinerary—even if you plan to stay in Japan for a month. However, you can select the attractions mentioned in this book according to your preference and desires.

Who is this Guide For?

This guide is for everyone! Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced traveler in Tokyo, you will always learn something new. Regardless of if you have traveled to Tokyo 10 times, twice, or even plan to visit for only 1 day, it is my gleaming hope that this rich travel guide greatly benefits you.

Before you travel to Japan, here are 5 tips you need to know.

1. Decide the Season

First, consider the season in which you plan to travel to Tokyo. The months of December to February are considered winter in Japan. The months of March to May are the spring season, the best season to visit Japan due to the beautiful and stunning cherry blossom scenery. The months from June to August are the summer season. The winter months are also a great time to explore Japan because of dazzling illuminations in the city. Keep in mind if you plan to visit Japan during the cherry blossom season to bring an umbrella, as it constantly rains during this season. If, on the other hand, you desire to travel during the winter season, make sure you bundle up, as the temperatures can be chilly.

2. Decide the Length of Your Stay

Second, decide how many days you want to stay in Tokyo. If your desire is to travel to other cities/prefectures aside from Tokyo, I recommend staying in the city for 3-5 days depending upon the number of days allotted in your itinerary. Conversely, if your purpose is to explore only Tokyo, then you will not experience difficulty in finding landmark options in this large city. I constantly hear about tourists spending 1-2 weeks or even a month in Japan. These same people find themselves returning to this country and extending their stay. Japan is absolutely amazing, and the places to visit, even in Tokyo, are breathtaking.

3. Attractions may Require Reservations

Third, keep in mind that some attractions may require online reservations, and make sure to always go to the attraction as early as possible. Usually for attractions such as the Tokyo Skytree and the Tokyo Tower, lines can be exceedingly long, especially during the cherry blossom and winter seasons. Many of the attractions are in Japanese, so if you are looking at a particular attraction, I recommend booking on Klook. One tip to add is if Klook or other travel company sites do not offer attractions you are looking for and there is no other option but to make a reservation or purchase tickets on a Japanese site, I recommend using the Chrome internet browser, which gives you the option to translate the Japanese page into your language. Another option is to go to the nearest convenience store and try purchasing tickets through a Kiosk ticket system. I have purchased tickets for events in the past at the Family Mart stores in Japan.

4. Withdraw Yen

Fourth, make sure you have sufficient yen before heading to your destination in Tokyo. Japan makes it simple for people by adding ATM machines in convenience stores. These ATM machines are tourist friendly in that they allow foreign credit cards. If, for some reason, you struggle to find an ATM machine in Tokyo, look for money exchange centers. I include a list of money exchange centers in Chapter 7 of my book A Journey Through Japan. Even though many attractions allow the use of credit cards, there are shops and restaurants that accept only yen in Tokyo. I have found that to be especially true for food markets/shops and other shops in Tokyo. Japan is a cash-based society, and it is important to always carry yen with you—even in Tokyo. Also, I recommend purchasing a coin pouch at a 100-yen store to carry your loose coins.

5. Purchase an IC Card

Fifth, purchase a Suica or Pasmo, a rechargeable IC card that can be utilized for trains, vending machines, and other things. Please keep in mind there is a possibility for IC cards to be suspended. Thus, after purchasing an IC card, I recommend transferring it to your cellphone. I show detailed steps in completing the transfer to a cellphone in Chapter 6 of my book A Journey Through Japan. An IC card adds to the convenience of your trip and allows you to travel Tokyo with ease. If you need to add additional yen to your card, you can transfer money through your phone or a kiosk ticket machine at train stations in Tokyo.

Planning Your Itinerary

The lively and bustling city of Tokyo is full of a myriad of amazing attractions. When you think about the size of Tokyo, you can easily be overwhelmed. Frankly, it is arduous to fit in all attractions (mentioned in this book) in your itinerary. Personally, I have learned the hard way that if I don’t plan my itinerary and stick with it, I can lose precious time on my Japan trip. One way I design my itinerary is through google maps, which allows you to create and name a folder and save attractions to it. This app (which can be downloaded on your smartphone) even gives you the option to mark the landmarks you have been to.

Having resided in Japan for over six years, I have covered the breadth and depth of Tokyo and still come away in a state of awe, as there are many attractions and sites in this city I have yet to explore. Nevertheless, if you are a tourist who is planning a trip to Japan, you are in for a treat. From stunning parks to breathtaking temples, this incredible city offers a grand variety of destinations to satisfy interests of tourists from all over the world.
