United Nations Development Programme

Key information

Creation: the United Nations Development Programme was created in November 1965 by the United Nations General Assembly. It arose from the merger of the Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance (EPTA, launched in 1949) and the United Nations Special Fund (created in 1958).Main activities: the UNDP acts on five critical areas that share a common aim, namely development and the well-being of people in the broadest sense:reduction of poverty and racial inequalitiesdemocratic governancecrisis prevention and post-disaster supportenvironment and the energy sectorprevention and eradication of diseases (AIDS, Ebola, etc.).Key words:Development: in a strictly economic sense, this is the qualitative and sustainable improvement of an economy and its functioning. Currently, the term ‘development’ is often considered more broadly, covering human, social, political and environmental aspects, among others.Extreme poverty: people living on less than $1.25 a day.Governance: way of governing or managing. In this precise context, we are specifically talking about democratic governance. This notion goes beyond the traditional framework of public action and includes new forms of civic responsibility. The state remains the central force, though not exclusive.Poverty line: the limit value below which a person is considered to be poor and is known as ‘vulnerable’.Sustainable development: a mode of development through which the needs of future generations are satisfied just as much as those of the present generation. The three interdependent components of sustainable development are the environmental, social and economic dimensions.

Introduction

Despite the positive results of the missions carried out by the UNDP, whose aim is to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and restore dignity to the most isolated individuals, 1.2 billion people are still currently living in extreme poverty. While this situation raises questions and it is desirable to adopt a critical stance regarding the recorded results, UNDP contributions are far from negligible. For example, in 2013 the organisation was involved in:

creating sustainable livelihoods (6.5 million jobs);widening access to social protection (15 million people) and justice (117 countries);establishing and ensuring the proper conduct of elections (42 million new voters);finding a balance in the use of natural resources.

These various contributions tend to line up with the five areas initially set out by the UNDP.

With its expertise based on nearly 50 years of activity on development, the strength of the UNDP lies mainly in its determination to establish quality partnerships where it operates, through North-South collaborations. Furthermore, it strongly encourages the development of relations between its partners (South-South), and promotes solidarity and the sharing of experiences.

UN Structure

The United Nations (UN) is an international organisation founded in 1945 that brings together almost every country of the world. It works for world peace and aims to support and strengthen cooperation in international law, international security, social progress, economic development and human rights.

Structured into several sub-organisations, the UN includes renowned institutions, such as the Economic and Social Council – which includes the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – as well as the International Court of Justice and the Security Council.
