Poznań

Poland

Poznań is the fifth largest city in Poland. It is located in the central part of western Poland. Poznań is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The first mention of the city dates back to the X-th century.

Poznań reached its economic blossom in the XVI-th century and was the second trading city of the Rzeczpospolita (the name of Poland at that time).

Due to wars, plague epidemics, and floods, from 1600 till 1730 the population of Poznań decreased almost three times. The Rzeczpospolita was also in crisis and decline. As a result, in 1793 Poznań became part of the neighboring German state – Prussia. Later Prussia became part of the German Empire, under whose rule Poznań remained until 1919.

Since 1876, in case of war with the Russian Empire, which constantly waged wars on its neighbors, the German authorities decided to turn Poznań into a super fortress. A citadel was built, around which 18 forts with a total length of 30 km were built. It was the third largest and most powerful fortress in Europe.

An anti-German uprising broke out in Poznań in 1918, as a result of which Poznań was liberated from German rule and became part of the Polish state recreated after the First World War.

During the Second World War Poznań was occupied by the Nazi Third Reich. During the war, the city was very heavily damaged – about 55% of the buildings were very damaged or completely destroyed. In the post-war years, many buildings were restored to their original appearance.

Nowadays Poznań is a beautiful ancient city in the Republic of Poland, which is part of the European Union, and is a great place for tourism and study.
