Italian Shoes

A man facing his past

Genre: thrillerReference edition: Mankell, H. (2009) Italian Shoes. Trans. Thompson, L. New York: The New Press.First edition: 2006Themes: the past, love, running away, the human condition, mistakes, death

This novel, which was published in 2006, is, strictly speaking, less a detective novel than a thriller. It is the story of a search for the past. Following what he refers to as “the catastrophe”, the narrator Fredrik has retreated to an island where he is the only inhabitant, along with his cat and dog. His world is turned upside down by the arrival of Harriet, his only love, whom he left without a word thirty years earlier. Fredrik then begins to settle accounts with the past, initially because he is forced to do so by his former lover, and later because he wants to stop running away and start living again. His efforts will earn him a daughter and forgiveness.
