Unlock the more straightforward side of The Time of the Hero with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of The Time of the Hero by Mario Vargas Llosa, which follows a group of cadets at the Leoncio Prado Military Academy (which the author himself attended as a teenager) as they navigate racial and social differences and grapple with the pervasive violence that surrounds them. The book catapulted its author to worldwide fame but was met with hostility at his former school, where it was publicly burnt. Mario Vargas Llosa was one of the key writers of the Latin American Boom in the 1960s and 1970s and has long been a key political voice in his native Peru. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010 after a literary career spanning several decades, and is still active as a novelist and journalist.

Mario Vargas Llosa was born to a middle-class family in Arequipa, the second-largest city in Peru and an important centre of industry, which is situated between the mountains and the coast. His relationship with his violent, womanising father is crucial to understanding his work, particularly The Time of the Hero, as it was his father who sent him to the Leoncio Prado Military Academy, which is the setting for the novel. He grew up in Arequipa, Cochabamba (Bolivia), and various neighbourhoods of Lima, including Magdalena del Mar, Callao and Miraflores, which also play a fundamental role in his work. He studied law and literature at the University of San Marcos in Lima, where he developed an interest in local politics, and he later joined the Peruvian Communist Party and the Christian Democrat Party. After graduating, he worked as both a newspaper and radio journalist, and these jobs had a major influence on his writing. He spent time in Paris before receiving a grant which enabled him to settle in Spain, where he met the editor Carlos Barral and the literary agent Carmen Balcells, who both played a fundamental role in the development of the Latin American Boom during the 1960s and 1970s. The Boom brought young Latin American novelists, including Vargos Llosa, Julio Cortázar (Argentinian novelist and short story writer, 1914-1984), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombian novelist, 1927-2014) and Carlos Fuentes (Mexican writer, 1928-2012) to popular and critical attention in Europe and around the world. Vargas Llosa’s body of work is vast and varied; in particular, it features numerous political novels, detective novels and comedies.

Vargas Llosa has been politically active in Peru as both a presidential candidate (he lost the 1990 presidential election to Alberto Fujimori) and a member of the Investigatory Commission responsible for inquiring into violence against journalists in a remote Andean village.
