Easier said than done? I have been a chronic worrier and anxious person my whole life. So I understand the stresses and anxieties of worry. However it is possible to overcome your worries and to relax and enjoy life more.
Here's some things you can do.
Exercise. Exercising releases endorphins into your body. It can calm you down, wear you out, make your body feel better and more relaxed. If you are learning new activities like kayaking, biking, weight lifting you are not only exercising your body but also your mind. You can learn and overcome challenges by doing things like trail riding or navigating down a river in a kayak.
However you don't need any money, equipment or location to exercise you can run around in a field or do squats in your cubicle at work (while no one is watching of course). Just do what is fun for you. Try something new or find a friend who is an expert in something and have them show you how to become a champion frisbee player the world is yours!
Write down what you are worried about to worry later. The brain is a complex beast but it can be tricked and you can trick your brain into forgetting about worries by having a notepad and writing down what you were worried about to worry about it later. Then you can either take that paper later and throw it away or worry for a set amount of time then rip it up.
Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. If we are in a proper sleep rhythm we are happier, more rested and more productive. Our bodies were not designed to go to bed at 3am on Friday and then 9pm on Sunday. If you find yourself worrying a lot it might because you are overtired. Go to bed early and find out what you are missing out on in the morning.
Stop drinking coffee. Drinking too much caffeine releases cortisol into your body which is a stress hormone. Try cutting back or only drinking a cup in the morning you would be suprised how quickly you can change your coffee intake with minimal adverse effects.
Stop drinking alcohol, smoking weed, doing drugs. Drugs and alcohol are a temporary solution that make the problem worse the next day. The more relaxed you feel now the more stressed out you will feel the next day when you are hungover. At least cut down on your use and don't abuse your body, the goal here is to stop worrying and enjoy and what's the point in doing that in the short term when you are more stressed out in the long term.
Eat less white sugar. Lots of people that have anxiety or worry may have it amplified by a drop in blood sugar. So to avoid crashing avoid consuming too much white sugar. Eat fats, protien, complex carbohydrates, sprouted grain bread or green veggies, some cheese, an apple etc. Have some nuts or dried fruit or lentils.
Stop with the soda, white bread, whole wheat bread, chips, candy etc. This makes you feel good for about 10 minutes then you are left feeling crappy. The only time I find it really helpful to eat the high sugar items is when you have gone too long without eating and your body is freaking out and need a quick fix then I find these foods really help regulate your blood sugar really quickly.
Come up with a solution to your worry and start working towards it. I know it sounds crazy but this actually works. If you are worried about your money make a budget, if you are worried about your relationship talk to your spouse, if you are worried about your kids make a plan with your partner. When you have a solid plan that you are acting on you definitely feel less stressed out and more prepared to deal with whatever the world sends your way.
Don't try to stop caring. I've tried this method before where you are worried about something so you just pretend you don't care or try not to care but this method is not very effective. It is much better to stop worrying than it is to stop caring.
Find other things to focus your mind on. When you are thinking about more productive/useful problems/interests whatever then your mind can't use that energy to worry. Have you ever thought about two things at the same time? It doesn't work very well. So push aside the worry and start planning that new deck you are building or crafting that thank you card to Aunt Helga for that fabulous toupee she bought you for Christmas.
