About the author

Gabriel was interested in philosophical questions from an early age, consumed by the meaning of life and nature of this creation. His search for happiness was first directed outwards, into the world of form and intellect, with a 12-year career in the financial services sector, eventually realizing that lasting happiness could not be found anywhere outside of us.

After a deep personal crisis and depression, he fully surrendered his life to the universe in 2013. An act that enabled re-evaluation of everything he thought he knew about the world and himself.

Gabriel was consequently guided through a rapid and deep personal transformation and journey inwards. It led through intense study of philosophical teachings of historical and living Indian and European Masters, through Mindfulness, Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta.

A number of shifts unfolded during this secluded study and meditation. The silencing of the mind, awakening of the heart, kundalini rising, bliss and the shift from person to presence.

Following a meeting with Sri Mooji in 2014, a deep final shift in identity happened, where the energetic sensation of an individual I and any doership disappeared.

Gabriel is now living in divine flow, surrendered to the love of each moment.

Dedication

I dedicate this book to all the Masters that through grace have come my way and guided this experience.

To Gill Fronsdal for his warm, beautiful and wise teaching about mindfulness and Buddhism, it saved my life. (www.audiodharma.org)

To Sri Mooji for lovingly guiding me over the last hurdle, into the heart of loving silence.

And in this worldly dream, to the loving spirits of my wife and son and all the creatures of Nangilima where we live.

Foreword

The chapters for this book came to me one day. I sat down to see these fingers type down the table of contents. The following weeks the content of the book was written, starting with the first words of the first chapter and continuing, word by word, chapter by chapter until it was finished.

This book is a practical guide to awakening. Pointing you to your natural state of freedom. This subject is paradoxical. We are this freedom. And this freedom is already here, free. But somehow, our experience has managed to project a separate sense of being into a person. Attention in our experience feed stories and emotions and causing this play of mental suffering.

Intellectual understanding of our true nature is useless. Somehow we must get to the lived experience of our true essence, our natural state of silence. We must somehow allow the dissolving of the mental tension, identification, and belief that seem to hinder us from the lived experience of silent awakeness.

This book is based on the process I was guided through intuitively and sets out practical contemplations and practices that may guide you toward clear seeing.

I believe that anyone that has the burning desire for freedom can become free. If your heart yearns for freedom, it is my hearts wish to help you see your natural state, the silent beauty of vibrating love, that which you have always been.

Infinite blessing and true love,

Gabriel

Our natural state of freedom

Freedom is a big word. Like all words, it points to something. And it is interpreted differently by each one of us. Perhaps it is best defined by what it is not. You can say that the word gets its power from its duality to what it is not. Like black gets its power from its contrast to the white. Perhaps the opposite of freedom is the sense of being restrained, caged or the lack of being able to do what one wants to do. A definition from the Oxford dictionary is; ”the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants” and another; ”The power of self-determination attributed to the will; the quality of being independent of fate or necessity”.

The freedom I refer to here is larger than this apparent freedom of money, ”free” will or power. It is the ultimate freedom. A freedom that is not conditioned on anything. Not time, not circumstances. It is a lived experience of our true being and it is always here.

This ultimate freedom is non-phenomenal. You will not be able to locate it. You will not be able to say that it is due to anything. And you will know this freedom that you are when you awaken out of the illusion of the things that seem to bind you.

It is not the freedom to do things in the world that money can buy. Nor things that power, status or looks may bring.

It is a freedom that makes you feel complete, whole and at home, wherever you are. A freedom that brings feeling tones of happiness, love, and joy for no reason, whatever the life circumstance.

It is the freedom that is at the end of searching. Our natural state of being, before sensations, emotions and thoughts. And yet one with all experience.

Experience is what matters

What is your experience right now? Do you feel happiness? Do you feel love? Do you feel joy?

Most people are not really aware of their moment to moment experience as it unfolds. Perhaps there is a reflection at some point of how this moment is, how the day was, how the week was, how the year has been. But most people are not generally aware of being aware.

The body-mind construct has inclinations and habits to bring in a complex experience of stories, emotions and thoughts. You may remember some historical time of happiness and therefore deduct that you should reproduce this event or state to again feel happy. Or you may imagine that you will experience happiness in the future, if only you could bring into your life some thing, person or event that will bring you happiness.

Therefore most people spend a great proportion of their lives, their Now moments, thinking of the past or the future. Thinking that this thing I’m doing now may not make me happy, but it will bring happiness in the future. Constantly postponing this event. And it is always something different than what is here right now. A goal is reached and we feel a brief relief, an opening and a sense of satisfaction or happiness. But then it subsides, and we want something different, a new goal must be set. We live in a constant search. With the sense that This that is, is perhaps good or bad, but definitely not exactly where I want to be. Because there is somewhere a sense of incompleteness.

We have to understand that true contentment, freedom, enlightenment, is the end of personal desire and identification. And instead merge in full acceptance with what is.

True freedom must be here now and always

True freedom and happiness, must, for it to be true freedom, be here in your experience right now. And if you re-read this at another time, the same must be true, always. This may sound impossible. ”How can I be happy when the world is like it is?”, or ”How can I be happy when I don’t have enough money?”, or ”I don’t have the right partner”, etc. etc. The mind will come up will infinite excuses to why this moment is not just perfect the way it is, reasons to why this moment is not worthy of complete happiness.

We are not in control of events, thoughts and emotions. This is why, if we look for unbroken contentment and happiness, we must find it somewhere other than in the ever-changing experience of the body-mind.

Our ultimate natural state of freedom

The ultimate freedom referred to here is our natural state of being. It is what Buddhist may refer to as Enlightenment and that all awakened masters from all traditions speak from. It is what you are and it is one with your experience and has always been. In a sense, it seems to be hidden, like a reflection in a magical mirror which fails to notice it is made by and one with the mirror.

Characteristics of this natural state, as it is experienced in the human body are:

A sense of presence (with every experience, whatever it is)

A silent mind (thoughts may arise and subside from time to time, but the base is stillness)

Marinating in beingness (a warm sense of existence holding itself, stillness and steadiness with world taking form and changing in you)
