This is Kapha; the other two are also available. You can use this series to adjust your lifestyle and routine in a way that supports your constitution.

In Ayurveda, Kapha is characterized by Earth and Water elements, making it the heaviest and most stable of the three doshas. In the body, Kapha is liable for solidity and all structures, as well as the right volume of body fluids. It regulates the weight, growth, lubrication of the joints and lungs, and the creation of all seven tissues—nutrient fluids, blood, muscles, bones, marrow, and reproductive tissue. Protection is the primary feature of Kapha.

Kapha types are calm, rooted, and genuine when they are in harmony. If Kaphas get out of balance, they binge-eat and under-exercise, triggering weight gain and diabetes. Stubbornness and commitment can become a matter for the emotional body. The unbalanced Kapha skin exhibits heavy oiliness, inflammation, cystic acne, blackheads, and large pores.

Introduction

Ayurveda, which derives from ancient Vedic scriptures, is a 5,000-year-old medical ideology and philosophy based on the idea that we are all made up of different types of energy.

There are three doshas in Ayurveda that describe the dominant state of mind/body—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. While all three are present in everyone, Ayurveda suggests that we each have a dominant dosha that is unwavering from birth, and ideally an equal (though often fluctuating) balance between the other two.

If doshas are balanced, we are healthy; when they are unbalanced, we develop a disorder commonly expressed by skin problems, impaired nutrition, insomnia, irritability, and anxiety.

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are all important to our biology in some way, so no one is greater than, or superior to, any other. Each has a very specific set of basic functions to perform in the body.

Although all three doshas are present everywhere in the body, the ancient Vedic texts describe a "Home Location" for each of the doshas. "Vata is mainly found below the navel, Pitta mainly between navel and heart, and Kapha above the heart."

That said, when the doshas are out of control, our well-being can be damaged. However, before we get into the particulars of each of the three doshas, it is helpful to understand their basic nature and their wider function in the natural world.

Throughout Ayurveda, the most basic building blocks in the material world are the 5 elements—Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Vata is characterized by the mobile nature of Air (Wind) energy. Pitta embodies the transformative nature of Fire energy. And Kapha reflects the binding nature of Water energy.

Each of the doshas has its own special strengths and weaknesses, and with a little awareness, you can do a lot to remain healthy and balanced. You can use this ‘Ayurveda For Beginners’ series to adjust your lifestyles and routines in a way that supports your constitution. It consists of three parts, one for each. This is Kapha; the other two are also available.

What’s the Meaning of Kapha?

The three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—determine the internal nature of a human being. All the Ayurvedic medicine recommendations are based on the so-called body type.

Kapha is the power of stability due to the rooted, stable elements that create it. Kapha type represents earth and water in their physical, mental, and emotional being. It holds properties such as heavy, slow, and steady, soft, thick, hard, and cold. In the body, it is liable for solidity and all structures as well as for the right volume of body fluids and lubrication in the mind and body. It regulates the weight, growth, lubrication of the joints and lungs, and the creation of all 7 tissues—nutrient fluids, blood, muscles, bones, marrow, and reproductive tissue. Protection is the primary feature of Kapha.

Physical and psychological health and endurance are regulated by Kapha. The structural durability of the body (cohesiveness to preserve a particular form/shape), the resistance from diseases, the preservation of body fluids, the activation of feelings such as affection, sympathy, empathy, tolerance, fidelity are all attributed to it.

‘Kapha’ word is taken from the root 'slish alingane,’ which implies to tie or keep together. This includes the materials of the earth and water, which allows the adhesive to bond the cells of the body together. Just as rejuvenating water moisturizes the earth, the dried dust helps bind mud, Kapha is assumed to keep the body together by moistening the earthen and solid structures of the tissues and skin. Kapha’s main residence is the stomach, but it also resides in the chest, throat, head, lymph, and pancreas.

Kapha dominant individuals are calming, grounding, relaxing, and lazy occasionally. They are considered being caring and compassionate, but often they have a tough time with their own self-care as they put the interests of others above their own. They are natural and steady, which some may also see as dull and boring.

While they are the most caring of the doshas, they are often the most prone to suffer from stress as they hide what is going on internally within themselves, contributing to issues with the Throat Chakra, such as thyroid disorders, mucus, and colds. The toughest thing for them is to implement more activity in their lives.

Kaphas are calm, rooted, and genuine while in harmony. If Kapha gets out of control, they binge-eat and under-exercise, triggering weight gain and diabetes. The body of Kapha type is strong and often stocky. It's really easy for Kapha type to add weight, and it's always hard for them to lose it.

They have major features—dense hair, large eyes, and thick lips. The Kapha persona is sweet, caring, and faithful. They're the ones at the group or social event to make sure everybody else is all right. They're trying to make sure your drink is finished, you've eaten, and you're not either too hot or cold. Kapha type are often strong, calm, and regular. The unofficial Kapha Dosha mascot is an elephant. They walk steadily, open their hearts, and have innate respect towards others.

Like Earth's stability, the Kapha personality holds peaceful, serene strength. A patient nature, love, and well-grounded beliefs are the distinguishing virtues that make the Kapha individual a faithful, true friend.

The complexion of the Kapha is pale, soft, and cool. Their skin is normally oily, the hair appears to be dense and lustrous, but is susceptible to oiliness that needs to be controlled. Rich red and purple clothes warm their cool skin, and garnets and rubies are the height of their strength and courage. The gentle manner of Kapha is charming, not to mention soothing and understanding. A quick massage with heated oil and some energetic music with a fast rhythm and a high volume would be more than enough to get Kapha type up and moving again in no time.

When Kapha is out of control, weight gain, excess mucous, lethargy, and nausea in the digestive tract can occur. Stubbornness and commitment can become a matter for the emotional body. Unbalanced Kapha skin exhibits heavy oiliness, inflammation, cystic acne, blackheads, and large pores.

According to Ayurveda, Kapha usually has a structure that is vulnerable to weight gain, sometimes even with a regular diet. They tend to have a slow but steady appetite and may struggle with weight gain because they love food (especially sweet tastes) but have slower digestion.

Some of the first signs of Kapha Dosha are likely to be a weak metabolism, accompanied by a sense of heaviness and a loss of overall energy and motivation. It will happen with overindulging with too much sweet food and comfort eating.

In this book, we'll dive deeper into what Kapha means, what throws Kapha out of balance, and how to identify the Kapha Dosha in your environment, in yourself, and in others.

Whether you have a Kapha body type or you're having Kapha deficiency, a daily routine that works on counteracting Kapha's natural tendency for excessive heat and acidity can be a huge help. I'm going to walk you through how you can start tiny by sticking to a routine to work out, go to bed, and eat every meal each day.

What is Kapha Dosha?

Kapha stems from the elements of earth and water and translates as "that which sticks." It is the strength of building and lubrication that gives the body the physical form, structure, and smooth functioning of all its parts. Kapha may be thought of as the body's essential cement, glue, and lubrication in one. The unofficial Kapha Dosha mascot is an elephant.

Just as a nourishing rainstorm can turn into a rampant flood, the body's fluids can flood the body's tissues, contributing to heavy dampness that weighs down the body and clouds the mind.

Kapha is the energy that shapes the structure of the body—bones, muscles, tendons—which provides the "glue" that binds the cells together. Kapha provides water to all parts and systems of the body. It lubricates the joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. In balance, Kapha is expressed as compassion, quietness, and forgiveness. Out of balance, this leads to addiction, greed, and envy.

When Kapha rates rise (excess Kapha) it may contribute to severe health problems. It's named the Kapha Dosha.

Symptoms and Effects of Kapha Dosha

Physical:

• Mucoid diarrhea

• Pre-diabetes

• Fatty buildup in the arteries

• Hay fever

• Cold/cough/runny nose

• Excessive mucous

• Slow/sluggish bowel movements

• Impaired appetite

• Lack of energy

• Cold sweats

• Excessive urination

• Excess ear wax

• Oily skin and hair

• Poor sense of taste and smell

• Increase in body weight

• Dense white tongue coat

• Sinus congestion

Behavioral:

• Delusion

• Possessiveness

• Lethargy/sleepiness

• Trouble waking up in the morning 

• Ignorance

• Greed

• Depression

• Stubbornness

• Emotional overeating

Effects

Physical:

• Serious hypotonia

• Glaucoma

Characteristics/Qualities of Kapha Type

 

The qualities/characteristics of Kapha are cold, moist, heavy, dull, static, smooth, dense, oily, and soft. Kapha aggravating tastes are sweet, sour, and salty. Choosing more of the qualities/characteristics of food and lifestyle choices that have the opposite impact—such as hot, dry, clear, light, sharp, active, rough, bitter, pungent, and salty helps retain equilibrium or get the excess Kapha back into control.

Kapha type admire arts like dance and music. They have an inherent sense of taste, smell, and love to eat. They can be quite addicted to material wealth and have trouble understanding the distinction between needs and luxuries. Despite being hard-working, they often seem to be lazy and want to sleep more than others. They just don't like the cold; they enjoy the warmth.

We all love the caring spirit of the Kapha people, and keeping them next to us can be a great pleasure. Nothing tends to bring them out of sync, and they always appear to be respectful and patient. They are perfect administrators who deal professionally with a lot of problems at the same time and can even address certain crucial questions when doing so. They hold what they've learned, so they can recall the tiny details.

They have proclaimed regularity and routine to be their philosophy of life, on which they do not have to work on. They all sound optimistic, but they do seem to overeat, neglect exercise, and oversleep.

Their desire to hang on to objects, pounds, and people—combined with water retention—makes life tough for them in several aspects, but financially, this leads them to prosperity and wealth.

When Kapha is in harmony, they experience a sense of comfort in bodily function. The strong, stable, conservative qualities of Kapha aid their body heat and protect their organs. There is a firm quality in their joints, which are well lubricated to support the bones, and there is internal support from mucous membranes and GI lining as well as myelin sheaths for proper brain functioning.

Ayurveda claims contentment is one of the advantages that balanced Kapha adds to their lives. Kapha's capacity to love and forgive fosters relations of kindness and endurance.

Kapha individuals enjoy the heat and struggle with cool, humid environments. They emanate power and harmony, to such a degree that the Vata and Pitta type are often replenished simply by staying in their presence. They are committed but usually tend to lay low, often to the point of lethargy.

Despite their tendency to laziness, Kapha type do their utmost to concentrate on a non-sedentary lifestyle, keeping a tight routine that keeps them going. Of all the doshas, the Kapha type can persist and benefit from the most extreme types of exercise. Ideally, a Kapha type should rise before 6 am, take a bath, and execute a good workout before breakfast.

 

Kapha is Heavy

Heavy quality provides stability, adding a certain rooted, true, relatable, and embodied quality to the personality. In excess, it leads to fatigue, lethargy, weight gain, feeling overburdened, weighed down, or feeling discouraged.

 

Kapha is Slow/Dull

Slow quality produces a sense of intentionality and purposefulness, and a capacity to manage one's self properly. This helps them to be completely aware while building depth, meaning, and relation. Excessively, this trait may contribute to a dull appetite, poor metabolism, unnecessarily slow motion or voice, a dull or uninspired mind, aversion to change, and boredom.

 

Kapha is Cool

The cool quality can make the skin slightly cool to the touch, sometimes providing a relaxed, cool-headed attitude that is not easily distorted. In excess, this quality will dampen the heat and productivity of the digestive fire, or cool one's passion and motivation.

 

Kapha is Oily

Oiliness makes the skin inherently soft and lubricated, induces easy movement of the joints, and strengthens Kapha’s capacity to relax, embrace nourishment, and offer or receive affection. In excess, it may contribute to oily skin and hair, acne, extra mucus, or an especially manipulative personality.

 

Kapha is Smooth

The smooth quality helps to keep the skin, hair, and body smooth and soft. It also promotes smooth movement in the joints, graceful movement of the body, and a calm, gentle, and caring attitude. If exacerbated, the smooth consistency can induce water retention and excess adipose tissue.

 

Kapha is Stable

Stable quality offers distinct stability in mind and body—a strong balance—which is highly valued by many who are inherently more sensitive or flighty. In addition, stable quality may contribute to inactivity, stubbornness, or stagnation.

 

Physical Characteristics

 

The Kapha people have a solid, well-developed body with well-developed limbs and wide shoulders. They have a broad chest, powerful muscles, and wide and thick bones. With soft, oily, and lustrous skin—the Kapha type embraces a regular appetite with fairly slow-burning digestion. That's why they tend to accumulate so many kilograms and barely drop weight. Women of the Kapha type have thick thighs, long arms, and large breasts. They’re a little short and have fat legs, but their walk is elegant. Men have broad shoulders, are short, and have well-developed muscles (if not fat), thick thighs, and a strong torso.

They're naturally deep sleepers. They are patient, rooted, loving, balanced, and compassionate for their family and loved ones. But when Kapha aggravates, it adds up to unnecessary weight gain, oversleep, fluid accumulation, allergies in the body, and depression.
