Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 1 ball.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
J. & P. Coats Bias Trim, 1 package.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 1 skein the same color as Bias Trim, for embroidery.
Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.
Starting at bottom, cast on 57 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: K across. 3rd row: * P 1, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 1. 4th row: K across. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 6½ inches. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and the following 8th row (53 sts). Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row, 4 times (45 sts). On next row work in pattern across first 17 sts, bind off 11 sts (thus starting neck shaping), then continue across remaining 17 sts. Hereafter work over these last 17 sts, binding off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 3 times, at the same time decreasing 1 st at opposite edge every row, until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach thread at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond. Sew binding all around edges. Cut 2 pieces about 10 inches long and sew one at each side of neck edge for ties. Embroider bird design as in diagram, using 4 strands and working it in chain stitch.

Gauge: 7½ sts to 1 in.
With size 4 needles cast on 72 sts. Starting at neck edge, purl 1 row, then work 1 row of beading as follows: K 1, * Y O, K 2 tog.; repeat from * ending K 1. Purl 1 row, then work as follows: Row 1—K 15 (left front); Y O, K 1, Y O (seam st); K 6 (sleeve); Y O, K 1, Y O (seam st); K 26 (back) : Y O, K 1, Y O (seam st); K 6 (sleeve); Y O, K 1, Y O (seam st); K 15 (right front). Row 2—K 2, P 4, K 2, P 64 (including the Y O's), K 2, P 4, K 2. Row 3—K 16, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 8, Y O, K 1,Y O, K 28, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 8, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 16. Row 4—K 2, P 4, K 2, P 72, K 2, P 4, K 2. Row 5—K 17, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 10, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 30, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 10, Y O, K 1, Y O, K 17. Row 6—K 2, P 4, K 2, P 80 , K 2, P 4, K 2.
Continue working as given above, adding 1 more st to each front, 2 sts to each sleeve, and 2 sts to the back, every other row; keeping the first and last 8 sts worked in pattern of K 2, P 4, K 2, on the P side; until there are 20 increased rows (232 sts). P 1 row, then K 36; place on st-holder. K the next 46 sts for left sleeve. Place remaining sts on 2nd st- holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 46 sleeve sts for 5½ in., ending with a K row. Change to size 1 needles and P 1 row decreasing to 38 sts. Work cuff as follows: K 4 rows; K 1 row, P 1 row, for 6 rows; K 4 rows. Bind off. Place the 150 sts from 2nd st-holder to needle. Attach yarn at back underarm seam of sleeve just made. K across 68 sts for back; place them on st- holder. K across the next 46 sts for right sleeve; place remaining sts on st-holder for right front.
Work right sleeve to correspond to left. Join yarn at right front seam. Place sts of right front from st-holder to left hand needle and K across to front edge. Join sacque tog. at underarms as follows: K 2, P 4, K 2, P 28; place sts of back from st-holder to needle and P them; place sts of left front from st- holder to needle and P 28, K 2, P 4, K 2 (140 sts). Working the first 8 sts in pattern and remaining sts in stockinette st, start increasing for gussets at underarms on the next row as follows: Row 1—K 35, increase 1 st in each of next 2 sts, K 66, increase 1 st in each of next 2 sts. K 35. Rows 2 and 4—K 2, P 4, K 2, P 128, K 2, P 4, K 2. Rows 3 and 7—Knit. Row 5—K 35, increase 1 st in next st, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 66, increase 1 st in next st, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 35. Rows 6 and 8—K 2, P 4, K 2, P 132, K 2, P 4, K 2.
Row 9—K 35, increase in next st, K 4, increase in next st, K 66, increase in next st, K 4, increase in next st, K 35. Continue increasing as given above, every 4th row, until there are 10 increased rows (180 sts), then work as follows: Rows 1 and 3 (wrong side)—K 2, P 4, K 168, P 4, K 2. Rows 2 and 4—Knit. Keeping the first and last 2 sts K on the P side; P 1 row, K 1 row, for 4 rows. K 4 rows. Bind off. Sew underarm seams. Work 1 row of picot sts around entire opening.
