Preface

This is a destination

for a lifetime of journeys.

Cape Town – well, how to describe this city? Some guide books divide places into categories like: worth a visit, worth a detour, worth a journey. This is too limited an approach to Cape Town. The Mother City isn’t only worth a journey, but a lifetime of journeys. This metropolis offers such an abundance of first class sights, that one quickly realises: here you have an enormously blessed corner of the earth. A reliably warm climate; refreshing winds; wonderful light; open-minded people; picturesque hills or mountains; not less than two oceans; charming inlets with a wealth of sandy beaches which won’t easily be found anywhere else; a young, colourful city alive with (relaxed) activity; a natural setting that can take on San Francisco or Sydney any time. One can enter an awe-inspiring National Park right in the city; but there’s a lot more. Natural and cultural or historic world heritage sites meet here. Cape Town is located in one of the only 6 floral kingdoms worldwide - the South African Cape Floral Region. And don’t forget: you’re in Africa! A continent that delights visitors again and again with specific spots of colour, scents, culinary experiences and - last but not least – smiles. Enjoy the most beautiful city of the world…

Cape of Good Hope

Plan to spend the whole day here. It’s only 50 km from Downtown to famous Cape of Good Hope, the fairest capein all the world as it was named by Francis Drake. Follow the M3 along the east coast of the Cape Peninsula. The usual brown signs show you the way to Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. After you’ve left the settlement area, there’s a sharp bend to the right. A sign tells you to turn left soon. Drive over the cattle grid and be ready to pay the entrance fee. If you’ve chosen a day that is neither a Sunday nor a public holiday in South Africa (and not during school holidays), you’re not likely to wait long. Take one of the leaflets that include a small map of the park and its sights. As the south part of the Cape Peninsula is completely protected, the park is relatively big and you don’t want to get lost, do you? Most visitors drive to the Cape Point car park first.

Respect speed limits for the benefit of the wildlife that abounds in the park. (Although, of course, you don’t spot all of the animals near you at first sight and from a passing car.) Always be aware that baboons are clever and quick thieves. So whenever you get out of your car, make sure you’ve closed the windows (even in summer) and locked the vehicle. The monkeys usually are very friendly, but neither shy nor defenceless, and they act in groups. If you don’t want them to have your sandwich, bag of crisps or lunch box, don’t leave anything unattended (not even for a moment!) or in the hands of small children.
