Peasant Banding Pattern

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercer­ized Crochet, Size 30. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9. 1 ball each of Color 82 Autumn Glow and 106 Sport Green.

With Color 106, make ch desired length (about 3 inches shorter than width of doily), ch 5 additional to turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 9th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, 1 d c in next, and repeat from * to end of ch, ending with even number of sps. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: 1 sp over each sp of previous row, fasten thread, and break off. Attach Color 82, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * Skip 1 sp, 1 d c in next sp, ch 4, 6 d c over d c just made (1 shell), and repeat from * ending with sl st in 3rd ch of ch-5 of previous row. Fasten thread and break off. Then attach same thread to point of 1st shell at beginning of same row, ch 3. 4th row: * 1 d c in point of next shell, ch 4, 6 d c over the d c just made, and repeat from * ending with 1 d c in 4th d c of last shell of previous row. Ch 3, and break off. 5th row: Attach Color 106 to ch-3 just made, ch 5, turn. * 1 s c in point of next shell, ch 5, and repeat from * ending with ch-5 and 1 d c in 3rd st of ch-3 of previous row. Ch 5, turn. 6th row: * Skip 2 ch, 1 d c in next, ch 2, skip 2 ch, 1 d c in s c, ch 2, and repeat from * to end of row. Ch 5, turn. 7th row: 1 sp over each sp of previous row. Fasten thread. Then, with Color 106, make 2 rows of sps on each end. Hem down on place mat as desired.

Insertion Pattern

Materials Required—AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" or "GEM" MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Size 20

9—300 Yd. Balls will make 2 stripes 90 inches long and the edging around Cloth.

3 Skeins of "Star" Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, White for initials on napkins.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 12 or 13.

2½ Yds. of 45 inch Linen will make a cloth 64½ x 92½.
