Beschreibung

Children are often viewed as highly resilient and able to bounce back from just about any situation, but traumatic experiences in childhood can have severe and long-lasting effects well into adulthood if they are left unresolved. Childhood trauma can result from anything that makes a child feel helpless and disrupts their sense of safety and security, including: domestic violence; an unstable or unsafe environment, sexual, physical or verbal abuse, separation from a parent, neglect, bullying, serious illness; or intrusive medical procedures.

If you're living with the emotional and psychological consequences of a traumatic childhood, there is hope. Here are ways to heal your childhood trauma and reclaim your life.

INTRODUCTION

Childhood should be a period of wonder and delight, of discovery and learning. For far too many people, though, childhood is a period of dread, sorrow, and tragedy. Abuse, neglect, abandonment, or other types of trauma can have long-term consequences for a person's emotional, mental, and physical well-being, even into adulthood.

Childhood trauma may show up in a number of ways, ranging from anxiety and depression to drug misuse and interpersonal issues. Trauma may alter the way our brains perceive and respond to stress, making it challenging to maintain emotional and behavioral control. It can also cause a widespread sense of guilt, poor self-esteem, and a confused perception of reality.

However, recovery from childhood trauma is possible. This book is for adult readers who want to overcome childhood trauma and the obstacles that come with it. It is a handbook for people who are ready to go on the path of healing and progress, providing practical counsel and direction for navigating the complicated and often painful world of childhood trauma.

This book examines the numerous ways in which childhood trauma may damage our lives, drawing on the most recent research in psychology and neuroscience as well as my personal experience dealing with trauma survivors. It takes a sympathetic, nonjudgmental approach to recovery, acknowledging that each person's journey is unique and needs tailored care.
