Materials Required:

 

AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40

4 balls Silver Spangle for Hat.

1 ball each Green Spangle and Red Spangle for trim

- or

-"STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140

2 balls White for Hat.

1 ball each Red and Emerald Green for trim.

¾ yd. hat wire.

Steel crochet hook No. 1.

 

If "Star" Fast Heavy Crochet Mercerized Cotton is used, work entire set with a single strand of thread. If The Famous "Puritan" Star Spangled Mercerized Crochet Cotton is used, work entire set with a double strand of thread.

 

HAT

 

With Silver Spangle or White ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.

 

2nd Round: 2 s c in each s c.

 

3rd Round: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

 

4th Round: * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

 

 

5th Round: Working in s c, increase 6 s c evenly spaced but do not place increases directly over increases of previous round. Repeat the last round until crown measures 6 inches in diameter.

 

Work even until crown measures 5 ¾ inches from center of crown (starting point) or length desired to fit head, sl st in next st to even round, ch 1, turn.

 

START BRIM: Skip the sl st, * 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * to within 3 ½ inches from beginning of round, sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

 

2nd, 3rd and 4th Rows: Skip the sl st, sl st in next s c, 1 s c in each s c to within last s c, sl st in this s c, ch I, turn.
