Miladys Handkerchief Case Pattern

MATERIALS—D-M-C Pearl Cotton, Art, 116D, Size 8: 3 balls Rose No. 81 8 (C), 2 balls Rose No. 3326 (B), 1 ball Red No. 815 (A) or any desired D-M-C colors.

Suitable lining: 13 inches by 25 inches.

½-inch ribbon to match for ruffle; 2 yards.

Steel Crochet Hook, Size 9.

GAUGE: Each Motif must measure 1¼ inches across center.

NOTE: All rnds are worked from right side.

FIRST MOTIF—† With A make a loop on hook (always begin new yarn this way), ch 2, 10 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join (with slip st) in first sc. Rnd 2—Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join in first sc, fasten off. Rnd 3—With B 1 dc in any sc, [ch 1 and 1 dc] in each of next 19 sc, ch 1, join in first dc (20 sps), fasten off. Rnd 4—Skip joined st, with C work a Petal in next sp as follows: yo, draw up a loop in sp, yo, draw thru 2 loops on hook,*  yo, draw up a loop in same sp, yo, thru 2 loops; rpt from * once, yo, draw thru all 4 loops on hook (Petal made), [ch 5 and a Petal] in each of next 3 sps, ** ch 11, skip next sp, a Petal in next sp, [ch 5 and a Petal] in each of next 3 sps †; rpt from ** twice, ch 11, skip next sp, join (in top of first Petal), fasten off.

2ND MOTIF—Rpt between † of First Motif, ch 5, drop loop from hook, insert hook in center ch of any ch-11 of First Motif and draw dropped loop thru (thus attaching), ch 6, skip next sp on 2nd Motif, * a Petal in next sp, ch 2, attach to center ch of next ch-5 as on chart, below, ch 3 *; rpt between * twice, a Petal in next sp, ch 5, attach to center ch of next ch-11 on First Motif; to complete rnd, ch 6, skip next sp, a Petal in next sp, [ch 5 and a Petal] in each of next 3 sps, ch 11, skip last sp, join, fasten off.

3RD MOTIF—Rpt between † of First Motif, ch 5, attach in center ch at X on chart, ** ch 6, skip next sp; rpt between * of 2nd Motif 3 times, a Petal in next sp, ch 5, attach in same center ch already used (arrow on chart) **; complete rnd as 2nd Motif.

4TH MOTIF—Rpt between † of First Motif, ch 5, attach in center ch at Y on chart; rpt between ** of 3rd Motif twice only end 2nd rpt by attaching last Loop in center ch at Z on chart, ch 6, join, fasten off. Continue to make and attach Motifs in this way, having a square of 9 x 9 Motifs (81 Motifs in all). EDGING—With C work 1 sc in any corner Loop, * ch 6, slip st in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, 1 sc in next Loop; rpt from * around, join. Block to an 11½-inch square and press lightly under cloth. FINISHING—Shirr ribbon to about 48 inches. Cut lining in 2 pieces, each 12½-inches square. Place right sides together and sew ½ inch seam around 3¾ sides (pillow-case fashion) with ruffle in seam. Turn right side out and sew last ¼ side. Sew crochet over lining. Sew Case as in sketch below. Sew half snapper at inside of open tip and other half at inside of center tack.
