School Girl Dress Pattern

 

SIZE 12 YEARS

 

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of White and 10 balls of color 123 Salmon Pink. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6. Two buttons. Two snap fasteners.

 

Blouse

 

Back. With Salmon Pink, ch 113, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next ch, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in each of next 3 ch. Repeat from * to end of row, ch 5, turn (28 blocks in all). 2nd row: Skip 1 d c, d c in last d c of 1st block, * d c in next ch-1, d c in first d c of next block, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in last d c of same block, repeat from * across, ending row with ch 1, d c in turning ch, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * D c in ch-1, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, repeat from * across, ending row with d c in last d c, d c in next ch, d c in next ch, ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately, until there are 37 rows from be­ginning. At end of 37th row, turn and break off.

 

Armhole. 1st row: Attach thread to beginning of 3rd block, ch 5, and work pattern across until 23 blocks are made, then ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 3, turn. Work pattern even for 19 rows, break off.

 

Front. With Salmon Pink, ch 133, turn. 1st row: D c in 6th ch from hook, d c in each of next 2 ch, and work pattern across as for back until 32 blocks are made, then ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch, ch 3, turn. Work evenly as for back to as far as armhole. Decrease for armhole same as for back. Work 4 rows even.

 

To Shape Neck. Divide front in half. Working only on one half of front, decrease 1 block or 1 space (as the case may be) at neck edge of each row for 20 rows. Make other side to correspond. Sew front and back together having rows meet.

 

Sleeves. With Salmon Pink, ch 97, d c in 4th ch from hook and follow directions for 1st row of back. Work pattern evenly for 20 rows. Decrease 1 space or block (as the case may be) on both ends of every row for 20 rows. Break off. Sew sleeves into armholes, leaving underarm seam of sleeve open.

 

Collar. With White, ch 115, turn. 1st row: Half d c in 3rd ch from hook, half d c in each st of ch, making 10 increases at equal intervals, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each half d c, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Half d c in each s c, ch 1, turn. 4th to 8th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately.

 

Bow. With White, ch 17, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch, ch 2, turn. Then work a row of half d c's and a row of s c's alternately, until work measures 10 inches. Break off. Then, with White, ch 12 and work same as for Bow for 2 inches. Break off. Fold long strip into a bow and place shorter piece around it at center. Sew in place. Place center of collar to center of Back at neck line and sew in place. Sew bow at center back of neck on collar.

 

Lapels. With White, ch 8, half d c in 3rd ch from hook, half d c in each ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 1st half d c, 1 s c in each half d c, 2 s c in last half d c, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Half d c in each s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until there are 46 sts in row. Break off. Baste lapels to V neck and sew on as illustrated.

 

Covered Buttons. With White, ch 3, join with sl st to form a ring. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. Continue around making increases as necessary to keep work flat. When diameter is same as button to be covered, work 1 rnd even. Put button in and decrease as necessary to make cover for button. Sew buttons on lapels as in illustration.

 

Belt. With White, ch 18 and work same as for bow for length required. Break off. Sew snap fasteners on one end.

 

Buckle. With White, ch 25 and work same as for belt for 7 inches. Make 4 accordian pleats and sew on one end of belt. With Salmon Pink, make 1 row of d c around bottom and along edges of underarm seams of sleeves. Break off. Make 1 row of d c at bottom of blouse, break off.

 

Skirt

 

Front. With Salmon Pink, beginning at bottom, ch 173, turn and work pattern as for blouse for 10 rows. Then decrease 1 block (or space) at both ends of next row. Then decrease 1 block or space at both ends every 6th row for 6 times. * Work even 3 rows, next row decrease 1 block or space at both ends, repeat from * until skirt measures desired length. Break off.

 

Back. Same as Front.

 

Sew front and back together, having rows meet. Make 1 row of d c at bottom of skirt. Break off. Work 1 row of spaces (* ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st, repeat from *) around waist for elastic. Draw elastic through spaces and sew ends together.

Sailor Suit Dress Pattern

 

 

SIZE 8-10 YEARS

 

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 4 balls color 9 Yellow for blouse and 5 balls color 130 Seal Brown for skirt, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita 5 balls of Yellow and 6 balls Brown. Milward's steel cro­chet hook No. 6.

 

Gauge: 8 d c or 4 star sts equal 1 inch. 7 rows equal 2 inches.

 

Blouse

 

Front. With Yellow ch 123, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each st of ch, ch 3, turn (120 d c). 2nd row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, draw thread through, insert hook in next ch, draw thread through, insert hook in 1st d c of previous row, draw thread through, insert hook in next d c, draw thread through (5 loops on hook), thread over, draw thread through all 5 loops (a star st). * Ch 1, insert hook through single back loop of ch-1 just made, draw thread through, insert hook under outside thread of star st just made, draw through, insert hook in next d c, draw through, insert hook in next d c, draw through, thread over and draw through all 5 loops (another star st). Repeat from * across (60 star sts). Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, skip 1st star st, 2 d c in each star st across. Ch 3, turn. 4th to 22nd rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately end­ing with a row of star sts (6 inches). Then shape armhole. 23rd row: Slip st over 3 star sts, ch 3 (to count as 1 d c) and work d c's to within 3 star sts from end of row (108 d c), ch 3, turn. 24th to 28th rows incl: Work straight.

 

Front Opening. Divide work in half and work over 27 star sts for 12 rows. Fasten off and work other side to correspond.

 

Back. With Yellow, work same as front omitting front opening.

 

Sleeves. With Yellow make a ch 14 inches long. Alternate 1 row of d c and 1 row of star sts, until 11 rows are made. Break off.

 

Waist Band. With Yellow ch 21, turn. S c in 2nd ch from hook. 1 s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in back loop of each st of previous row. Repeat 2nd row until work is the waist mea­surement. Fasten off.

 

Sleeve Bands. Work same as waistband but starting with ch-16 and working till band is long enough to go around arm.

 

Sew side seams. At the shoulders sew 14 star sts of front to 14 star sts of back from armhole towards neck. Sew up underarm seams of sleeves. Pin sleeves into armholes, easing in fullness evenly. Sew on sleeve bands easing fullness evenly. Sew waistband to blouse same as sleeve bands.

 

Collar. With Yellow, ch 30. Work 1 row of d c and 1 row of star sts back and forth for 33 rows. Sew collar on to back of neck between shoulders.

 

Collar Trimming. With Brown thread doubled, work 2 rows of s c all around collar and lapels.

 

Ball Trimming. With Brown ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each st. 3rd rnd: * 1 s c in 1st st, 2 s c in next st. Repeat from *. Work 3 rows evenly. Stuff with Brown thread. Then decrease every other st (to decrease work off 2 sts as 1) until end. Close and make a ch 6 inches long. Make another ball and ch. Attach both chains at neck as in illustration.

 

Skirt. With Brown, beginning at bottom of skirt, ch 340, join with sl st. Work 1 d c in each st of ch. Join each row with sl st, ch 3, turn. Work in pat­tern (1 star st row and 1 d c row) for 4 inches. Next row: (Star st row.) Decrease 8 times at equal intervals (to decrease, work star st until 5 loops are picked up, draw 1 loop through each of next 2 d c—7 loops on hook—thread over and draw through 7 loops). Work evenly for 2 inches. Decrease 8 star sts every 2 inches until work measures 18 inches from 1st row, ending with a row of d c.

 

Space for Elastic. Ch 1, 1 s c in each d c of previous row, join with sl st. 2nd row: Ch 4, * 1 tr in each of next 5 s c, ch 2, skip 2 s c, and repeat from * to end, joining last ch-2 to top of ch-4. 3rd row: Ch 2, 1 s c in each st.

 

Buster Brown Sweater Pattern

 

 

SIZE 12-14 YEARS

 

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen (5 balls) or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita (6 balls), White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. 16 small pearl buttons.

 

Gauge: 8 sts or 1 pattern equal ¾ inch. 3 rows equal 1 inch.

 

Back

 

Ch 155, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, * in next ch make 1 tr taking off 2 loops only, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next st taking off 2 loops 4 times, ch 2, 1 d c through the joining or center of the last d c and tr (this com­pletes the cross st), 1 d c in each of the next 4 sts repeat between *'s ending with the cross st, then 1 d c in last st (19 patterns in all—a pattern consist­ing of a cross st and a 4-dc group). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in 1st st, * 2 d c over the first ch-2 loop, 1 d c in next st, 1 tr in 1st st of d c group, taking off first 2 loops only, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in the last st of group, take off 2 loops 4 times, ch 2, 1 d c in center of the d c and tr, 1 d c in next st, repeat from *, making last d c in same place with the d c base of cross st. 3rd to 25th rows incl: Repeat 2nd row. Armhole. Break thread. Skip 1 edge pattern, attach thread at beginning of next pattern, work to within 1 pattern from end, making 1 d c in same place with the d c base of last cross st (17 patterns). Ch 3, turn. Work back and at end of row decrease ½ pattern by working the tr taking off 2 loops only, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next st, taking off 2 loops 4 times (½ cross st). Ch 3, turn. Begin next row with a cross st over the first 4-dc group, and continue across decreasing ½ pattern as before. Decrease ½ pat­tern at end of each of next 2 rows by working 1 d c over ch-2 of last cross st. Ch 3, turn. Rows will now begin with 4 d c (same as 2nd row), and there will be 15 patterns to a row. Work 15 rows straight (6 inches from underarm). Shoulder. 1st row: Sl st over 1 pattern, ch 2, 1 half d c over next ch-2, d c in d c, and work across in pattern to within 1½ patterns from end, make ½ cross st over next 4-dc group, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sl st over 1½ patterns and continue as for 1st row to within 2 patterns from end and finish as for 1st row. Turn. 3rd row: Sl st over ½ pattern, ch 2, 4 d c over next cross st, ½ cross st over next 4-dc group, ch 3, turn. 4th row: ½ cross st over 4-dc group. Break and fasten thread. Work 3rd and 4th rows on other shoulder to correspond.

 

Front

 

Ch 179, turn. Work same as for Back (22 patterns in a row) through the armhole shaping. Mark center of next row (for neck opening) and work pattern to this mark back and forth for 11 rows (no decreases). Neck Shaping. Decrease 1 pattern at neck edge on this row, and decrease ½ pattern at neck edge each following row until 3 patterns in all are decreased at neck edge (working armhole edge straight). Then shape shoulder as for back, continuing with the ½ pattern decreases at neck edge. Work other side of front to correspond. Sew up side and shoulder seams, leaving 2 inches open at waistline.

 

Waist Bands

 

Front. Ch 28, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in back loop of each st across, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until band is one-half inch less than half of waist measurement. Back. Same as front band. Sew bands to blouse, easing in evenly any blouse fullness.

 

Sleeves

 

Ch 115, turn, and work 14 patterns across. Work evenly for 12 rows. Then, on next 2 rows, decrease ½ pattern at each end. Work 1 row evenly. Repeat last 3 rows until 4 patterns remain in a row. Break off. Bands. Ch 13, and work as for waistband for 9½ inches. Sew bands to sleeves. Sew sleeve seams and sew into blouse.

 

Collar

 

Ch 30, turn, and work row of s c across. 2nd row: 1 sl st in back loop of each of first 3 sts, s c in back loop of each st across, ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in back loop of each s c, sl st in back loop of each of last 3 sl sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately, thus having all the sl sts on same edge, until the sl st edge measures about 14½ inches. Break off. Work a row of sps (* ch 2, skip 1 ridge, d c in next ridge, repeat from *) along sl st edge, holding in work to measure 13 inches. Sew collar to neckline.

 

Work a row of s c around neck opening, making 6 buttonhole loops of ch-4 each with s c between each loop on right edge. Sew buttons on opposite edge to correspond. Make 5 loops on each side of front band and sew buttons on back band to correspond.

Double Breasted Suit and Cap Pattern

 

SIZE 2 OR 3 YEARS

 

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 2 balls of Ecru and 3 balls of Color 26 Nile Green; or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 6 balls of Ecru and 9 balls of Nile Green. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3. 8 pearl buttons, ¾ inch diameter.

 

Gauge: 9 rows equal 1 inch. 7 sts equal 1 inch.

 

Blouse

 

Left Front. With Ecru, ch 64, turn. 1st row: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 1 s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 1 s c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. (Work should be about 8½ inches wide.) 3rd to 10th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 11th row: 1 s c in each of next 4 s c, ch 5, skip 5 s c (this makes a buttonhole), s c across, ch 1, turn. 12th row: 1 s c in each s c and in each st of the ch-5 of previous row. 13th to 42nd rows incl: Same as 2nd row. 43rd row: Same as 11th row (another buttonhole). 44th row: Same as 12 row. 45th row: Same as 2nd row. Armhole and Neck Shaping. 46th row: Sl st over 3 s c (armhole edge), s c across to within 2 sts from end, skip 1 st, 1 s c in last st (neck edge), ch 1, turn. 47th row: Skip 1st s c, 1 s c in each s c across, ch 1, turn. 48th row: Skip 1st s c, s c across to within 2 sts from end, skip 1 st, s c in last st, ch 1, turn. 49th row: Skip 1st s c, s c across. Continue to decrease at armhole edge 1 st every 2nd row until 9 sts in all have been de­creased then work this edge straight, meanwhile decreasing 1 st each row at neck edge until 24 sts are left. Shape shoulder as follows: Working from armhole edge towards neck, * sl st over first 3 sts, 1 s c in each s c across, ch 1, turn (no more decreases at neck edge). Work back to within 3 s c from end, turn. Repeat from * until 3 sts are left. Break off.

 

Right Front. Same as Left Front, omitting the buttonholes.

 

Back. With Ecru, ch 93, and work 45 rows of s c straight. 46th and subsequent rows: Shape armholes as for front. Then work evenly until work measures same as front up to the shoulder shaping, then shape shoulders same as for front. 38 sts will be left. Break off.

 

Sleeves. Sleeve is worked lengthwise. With Ecru, ch 33, turn. Work s c, increasing 1 st at beginning of every other row until there are 45 sts across. Work 33 rows evenly, then decrease 1 st at shaped edge of next row and every other row until 32 sts are left. Break off. Cuff. With Nile Green, s c in each row across straight edge of sleeve (opposite shaped edge) skipping every 6th row, ch 1, turn. Work 9 rows of s c straight. Break off. Make another sleeve to correspond. Sew sleeves into blouse. Sew sleeve and underarm seams.

 

Collar. With Nile Green, ch 161, turn. 1st row: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 1 s c in each ch, turn. 2nd row: Sl st over 5 s c, * 1 s c in each s c to within 5 sts from end, turn. 3rd row: Sl st over 3 s c, * 1 s c in each of next 9 s c, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * to within 3 sts from end, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: Sl st over 3 sts, 1 s c in each s c to within 3 sts from end, turn. 6th to 10th rows incl: Same as 5th row. Break thread. Join thread to end of foundation ch and work 1 s c in each st across outer edge of collar, ch 1, turn. Work another row of s c. Fit collar into neckline and sew in place.

 

Shorts

 

Left Leg. With Nile Green, ch 3, turn. 1st row: 2 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 2 s c in next st, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each st to within 1 st from end, 2 s c in last s c, ch 1, turn. 3rd to 9th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. There will be 20 s c after 9th row. 10th row: 1 s c in each s c to within 1 st from end, 2 s c in last s c (hereafter all increases will be made at this edge only, which will shape center front—opposite edge to be worked straight), ch 3, turn. 11th row: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 1 s c in next ch, s c in each s c across, ch 1, turn. 12th row: 1 s c in each s c, ch 3, turn. 13th row: Same as 11th row. 14th row: Same as 12th row, but ch 6 to turn. 15th row: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 1 s c in each of next 4 ch, s c across, ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 70 sts in row (last row should measure 9½ inches). From here on both edges are worked straight, the center edge becoming the waistline edge. Work straight for 1½ inches. Make a buttonhole on the next row by working to within 9 s c from waistline edge, ch 5, skip 5 s c, 1 s c in each of next 4 s c. Work 3 inches straight, then make a second buttonhole in the same position as the first. Work 3 more rows. With another ball of Nile Green, ch 34 (for side placket), and work 3 rows of 33 s c. Next row: 4 s c, ch 5, skip 5 s c (for buttonhole), s c across. Work 2 more rows and break thread. Continue with main piece, working s c across to within 33 s c from waistline edge, insert hook in next s c and in 1st s c of placket piece (on edge without buttonhole), and work off as a s c, work next 2 s c together with next 2 s c of placket piece, then continue along placket piece only, working s c in s c and 2 s c in last s c (not working over main piece). The buttonhole on placket should come directly beneath the second buttonhole on main piece. Work 16 more rows, in­creasing 1 s c at waistline edge every second row. Work 1 inch straight, then make a buttonhole the same distance from waistline edge as others. Work 1¾ inches straight, ending at leg edge. Now start decreasing at waistline edge, which will shape the center back: Work to within 4 s c from waistline edge, turn. * Sl st over 4 s c, s c across, ch 1, turn. Work back to within 2 s c from end, turn. Repeat from * until 21 sts remain, then sl st over 2 sts at beginning of each row until 1 st is left. Fasten off.

 

Leg Band. Attach Nile Green at leg edge of 10th row, and work 1 s c in each row, skipping every 10th row. Work 4 more rows of s c, decreasing 1 s c at beginning of each row. Fasten off.

 

Right Leg: Make to correspond with Left Leg.

 

Sew together at center back, center front and at crotch. Finish waistline edge with a row of s c, making 1 s c in each row, skipping every 10th row.
