J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, size 5, 5 balls of main color and 1 ball of contrasting color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6.
2 bone rings.
GAUGE: 9 sts make 1 inch; 2 rows of tr and 2 rows of sc make 1 inch.
Starting at bottom, with main color ch 34. 1st rnd: Sq in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Then, working along opposite side of foundation chain, make sc in each ch across (66 sc around). Join with sl st in 1st sc made. Ch 1. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each sc around. To join, insert hook in 1st sc, draw contrasting color through and ch 1. Drop main color. 3rd rnd: Sc in same place where joining was made, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1. Continue working in rnds of sc, working 1 more rnd with contrasting color, 1 rnd of main color and 2 rnds of contrasting color. Join with main color and ch 4. Fasten off contrasting color. Next rnd: Tr in same place as starting chain was made, * 2 tr in next sc, tr in next sc, 2 tr in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top st of starting chain. Ch 1. Following rnd: Make sc in same place as sl st, sc in each tr around. Join with sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1. Repeat this rnd once more, ending with ch 4 (instead of ch-1).
Next rnd: Tr in next sc, tr in each sc around. Join with sl st in top st of starting chain. Ch 1. Repeat the last 3 rnds for pattern until piece measures 5 ½ inches, ending with a tr rnd. Join with contrasting color and ch 1. Drop main color. Next rnd: Dec around as follows: Sc in same place as joining, * (skip 1 tr, sc in next tr) twice; sc in next tr. Repeat from * around. Con-tinue working in rnds of sc, working 1 more rnd in contrasting color, 1 rnd of main color, 2 rnds of contrasting color and 2 rnds of main color. Next rnd: * With contrasting color, work a dec rnd as before. Work 1 more rnd of sc with contrasting color and 1 rnd with main color. Repeat from * once more and fasten off, leaving an end for sewing.
Place a bone ring in opening at top, allowing only the upper half of ring to show. Sew front and back of crocheted piece together over lower half of ring. Make another pot holder same as this.
CORD . . . Using contrasting color, measure off 4 strands of Pearl Cotton, each 4 ½ yards long, twisting tightly. Double these strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Trace outline of crocheted piece on two pieces of paper. On one piece, write diagonally the word "Salt" and on the other piece "Pepper." Place one piece of paper over each pot holder and pin in place. Sew cord over letters and remove paper.
MATERIALS: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Gimp, 4 balls of main color and 1 ball of contrasting color. (This is sufficient for pitcher and bowl.) Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.
Gauge: 7 d c make 1 inch.
Bowl … Starting at center, with main color ch 3, 10 s c in 2nd ch from hook, join to 1st s c made. 2nd rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 4 tr in 1st s c; drop loop from hook, insert hook through 1st tr and draw loop through, ch 1 tightly (a tr-pc). * Ch 2 more, in next s c make 5 tr, drop loop from hook, insert hook through ch preceding tr's and complete tr-pc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 2 d c over each tr-pc (at back), and in each sp between, making 4 increases at equal distances apart—to inc., make 2 sts in 1 st—(44 d c) . Join. 4th rnd: Ch 4, in every other d c around make a tr-pc with ch-2 between (22 tr-pc's). 5th rnd: Like 3rd rnd, increasing if necessary to keep work flat. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, d c in each sp between d c's, increasing if necessary to keep work flat. Join. Repeat 6th rnd until piece measures 6½ inches in diameter. Now work in rows. 1st row: Ch 4, d c in same st (increase), d c in next 2 sts, half d c in next 3 sts, s c in next 13 sts, half d c in next 3 sts, d c in next 2 sts, 2 d c in next st (increase). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c across, increasing 1 st in first 2 and in last 2 sts (31 sts). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Work 1 st in each st in following order: * s c, half d c, d c, tr, d c, half d c. Repeat from * across, ending with s c. Fasten off. 4th row: Attach contrasting color, ch 4, * d c in half d c, half d c in d c, s c in tr, half d c in d c, in half d c, tr in s c. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 5th and 6th rows: S c in each st across, making ch 1 at end of 5th row. Fasten off.
Back … Ch 3, 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook; join. 2nd rnd: Make d c around, increasing to keep work flat. Join. Then work as for 6th rnd of front until piece is same size as front, ending with a row of s c, if necessary, to obtain desired size. Then work top of bowl to correspond with front.
Handles … Cut eight 27-inch strands of contrasting color and make two 3¾-inch chains. Insert pad (see below) and join front and back by overcasting edges neatly, at the same time sewing handles securely in place, as in illustration, between padding and back piece.
Pitcher … Work front and back as for bowl, but do not increase at handle edge of row section at top. Make only 1 handle, to be sewn in place as in illustration.
