DEDICATION
To everyone who has ever battled silently, who has felt unworthy, or doubted their ability to start again – This book is for you.
To those who dared to believe that grace could still reach them, and to every young person seeking to live pure in a broken world – You are not alone.
PREFACE
We live in a world where purity is often mocked, misunderstood, or treated as impossible. A world that celebrates freedom but quietly suffers in bondage. Many hearts are broken, not because they lack desire for God, but because they feel defeated by weakness.
This book was born out of a deep burden to speak hope into that silence. It is not a manual for perfection but a message of restoration – a call to rise again, to heal, and to walk in the freedom that Christ offers.
This book was written for anyone who has ever wrestled with guilt, shame, addiction, or confusion about holiness. It is for the person who loves God deeply but struggles privately. For the believer who has been told that purity is outdated, yet feels a quiet longing for something real, clean, and lasting.
Throughout these chapters, you will find stories (all names have been replaced with pseudonyms to protect the identity of those who permitted their stories to be shared in this book), truths, and principles drawn from Scripture and from life – lessons that prove that God’s grace is still stronger than human failure. Each page is a journey from brokenness to wholeness, from defeat to victory, from despair to hope.
You will not be judged here. You will be understood. You will not be condemned. You will be invited into the freedom that comes when truth replaces lies and when love replaces shame.
My prayer is that as you read, you won’t just learn about purity – you’ll experience it. You’ll begin to see purity not as a restriction but as a revelation – a way of living that restores peace, purpose, and dignity. And when you turn the final page, I pray you will know that God is not ashamed of your story. He’s still writing it. And this time, it will end in freedom.
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
- Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
CHAPTER ONE
RECOGNIZE ITS NAME
AND FACE
“Know your enemy and know yourself; and in a hundred battles, you will never be defeated.”— Sun Tzu
A few years ago, two sisters approached me at a camp meeting, seeking counsel about their struggle with pornography and masturbation. One was hesitant to speak, but the other opened up courageously, confessing how both of them were trapped in the cycle of addiction.
Their main question was simple: “Is masturbation a sin?”
They were confused because online sources said it was normal, yet the guilt that followed each experience refused to leave.
I remember admiring their courage to seek help and reminding them that God still loved them deeply. But at that time, my understanding of grace was still shallow. I rebuked them harshly, assuming that “real Christians” wouldn’t fall into such sins.
Looking back, I regret that response. I’ve since learned that life happens even to the sincerest believers, and genuine Christians do wrestle with sexual temptation. Sadly, instead of compassion, many who struggle receive condemnation from the very people meant to restore them.
If I had a second chance with those sisters, I would counsel differently. Yet I thank God for how He has since matured me through years of mentoring young people, research, and divine revelation. That gave birth to this book.
Facing an Uncomfortable Truth
Let’s be honest, this topic is not easy to discuss. Especially when, like me, you’ve battled it personally. It’s much easier to preach from a moral high ground, but I speak to you as one whom God has rescued from captivity.
Pornography addiction is real, destructive, and widespread. As Jolly Kesi and Paul Adepoju once wrote, “Porn is everywhere; its impacts are global, but little is being done to address the epidemic.”
In Africa, it is fast becoming a major plague among young people. While psychology debates its classification, what we know for sure is that pornography enslaves the mind, manipulates the emotions, and weakens self-control.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, addiction involves the “uncontrolled use of a substance or behaviour despite harmful consequences.” By this definition, pornography fits perfectly. It is a condition of emotional dependence on explicit content that disrupts normal life, relationships, and mental function.
There are many controversies on the classification of pornography as an addiction. This is because many scientists claim there is insufficient evidence to substantiate its similarities with chemical addictions and behavioural addiction.
Presently, the proposed ICD-11 classification classifies pornographic addiction under the Impulse Control Disorder section (this is under the Compulsive Sexual Behavioural Disorder (CSBD section).
