CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS not harmful if done in a regulated way. Doctors say that a healthy person can drink up to four drinks daily, every evening sometime around before dinner. It helps in metabolism, dealing with cardiovascular problems and also helps indigestion.
However, problem arises when a person exceeds more than fourteen drinks in a week on a regular basis and when alcohol becomes something that he needs to take in order to function. It harms our health in a severe way, especially by damaging the kidneys and the liver. Hence, now it is time to stop being in denial and ask yourself if you actually have a drinking problem.
It is very normal for you to not realize even if you have one because, that’s exactly how alcohol and any other addiction work. Before you even realize it, it overpowers your life rather than you overpowering it.
But then again, finding out if you have a drinking problem and working on it on your own and with the help of those around you is something that is doable, even though it may sound difficult.
First and foremost read below so you can identify if you have a drinking problem.
You are the best judge to find out, if you have become dependent on alcohol. You can start by asking yourself if you are drink alcohol because you feel lonely or depressed about some void in your life. This may be due to any reason, both in the personal or professional sphere.
It could be, for example missing a partner in your life, stress about your career, the conflicts in your family or the tension that you may go through in your professional life every day. May be the stress at work is too much, so at the day’s end you feel the urge to drink, or sometimes constant fights with your spouse could be a reason you seek solace in that bottle.
Alcohol is definitely not a way to end whatever problems you might be facing. However, when you drink to forget all your issues and forget about your day’s troubles there is a high likelihood that you may have become an addict already. Also ask yourself if now you drink alone most of the time, especially when you are home. That is another sign of your alcohol dependency.
Here we are not talking about a teenage kid coming home after a few drinks with his friends and pretending to be sober in front of his mother, so as to not to get caught. We are talking about you, a grown adult, who is literally hiding bottles from the people around. You may even be lying to them about your drinking practice.
This may be because deep down you probably know that you have crossed the limits of drinking already. You are feeling guilty about that and that is why you lie to others about your drinking.
Also, ask yourself how many times and how recently your family or your friends have criticized you for your drinking habits? How many of them have asked you to stop? If the count is significant, then you know it’s time that you seek some professional help.
If you have already become an addict then you will realize your alcohol tolerance is also quite high. Ask yourself, whether you get drunk with the same amount of alcohol that everyone else around you normally does? While in a social gathering, do you feel that everyone around drinks really slow? If notice that as you finish your second or third drink, they are still at their first one, then there is a serious problem.
Also the occurrence of frequent blackouts every time you drink might also be a sign that you are at a risky stage. Blackouts mean you lose a certain part of your memory, especially during the time when you are drinking. However, black outs do not always mean passing out.
This loss of memory can start as short term lapses but chances are, this may also lead to a long term loss of memory. You know you are at the highest level of risk when you feel shaky, anxious or weak without your daily dose of alcohol. The worst case of all is when alcohol is the only cure for you to ease down a hangover in the morning.
So yes, if you are suffering from any of the above mentioned symptoms, then all you need to do is accept that you have a problem and seek help right away. Alcohol might seem like a good way to ease your worries off, but you shouldn’t ignore the higher risk it entails.
It is very important for you to recognize your state regarding alcohol and seek help from a professional if needed.
