Beschreibung

Wicket Keeping is an art and, like any art there is a requirement to spend quality time practising this craft to make the outcome(s) consistent. The lack of time that is allowed for wicket keeping specific coaching in coach education programmes is reflected by the small amount of time that is spent coaching young keepers in junior club sessions. Generally this is not the fault of coaches but highlights the lack of opportunity they are given to develop an understanding about this specialised position. The aim of this book is to give coaches (at club and county age group level) a guide as how to set up and organise basic wicket keeping drills and activities. This resource is not designed to create more work but to be used as a 'quick and easy' way to help young wicket keepers develop their games further.

INTRODUCTION

Background

Wicket Keeping is an art and, like any art there is a requirement to spend quality time practising this craft to make the outcome(s) consistent. The lack of time that is allowed for wicket keeping specific coaching in coach education programmes is reflected by the small amount of time that is spent coaching young keepers in junior club sessions. Generally this is not the fault of coaches but highlights the lack of opportunity they are given to develop an understanding about this specialised position. The aim of this book is to give coaches (at club and county age group level) a guide as how to set up and organise basic wicket keeping drills and activities. This resource is not designed to create more work but to be used as a ‘quick and easy’ way to help young wicket keepers develop their games further.

The Drills

All of these drills have been used and developed with young players from the ages of 6-19 years of age playing at school, club and age group county level. This guide can be used by players to run the activities meaning that coaches only have to oversee the activities. The drills are all based around the principle that a keepers main job is to catch the ball. As coaches you can pick the drills that best fit into your own planning or better still, get the keepers to plan their own training sessions using this book.

Taking keeping to the next level

The very nature of coaching sport at a participation level means resources and staffing is always stretched. Specialised positions like wicket keeping tend to be forgotten about because of a lack of space, time and knowledge. This book gives coaches the chance to enhance their own knowledge of this specialist position. These drills require very little space and minimal equipment making it the perfect ‘player led’ guide. By using this book the profile of wicket keeping will raised and the standard of young keepers will be improved. Many coaches who have been through coach education would have been given some basic information of wicket keeping. This book reinforces and builds on this prior knowledge even further.

What will you find in this book?

A set of 50 Drills that are easy to set up and run for keepers of every level and ability. As a coach you can decided how to differentiate these drills by altering any of the following:

TimesRepetitionsDistances between markersAddition of competitionAdvanced coaching pointsSize and weight of ball used

The drills in this book can be adapted to suit any need, which is why I would encourage you to make notes and change this to fit into your player’s strengths. Each drill will have the following information

THE ROLE OF THE WICKET KEEPER

Primary Role:

All of the drills in this book focus on the primary role and objective of every wicket keeper is to:

To catch the ball consistently.

Secondary Roles:

The drills in this book are separated into different types of skills required by wicket keepers, these are:

Stance and Set UpWarming Up and PreparationCatchingMovementStanding Up (Offside and Leg side takes)Standing Back (Offside and Leg side takes)DivingReaction and Agility

As well as these skills a keeper must also be able to develop the following, which can be incorporated into any session, these are:

Communicate with bowlers and fieldersShow energy and dynamism in the field, consistentlySet a high standard for the rest of the fielding side to followConsistent encouragement and feedback to their own team

(This list is not extensive and is a useful starting point when discussing the role of the wicket keeper with any youngster)
