J. & P. Coats Tatting-Crochet, Size 70: 1 ball each of No. 181 Shaded Lt. Yellows and No. 76 China Blue.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 14.
A blue guest towel.
Make a sketch of initials desired, having each letter 1½ inches high.
INITIAL ... Using Yellow make a chain slightly longer than length desired. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. Form initial with strip. Attach Blue to outer edge of initial and sc closely across. Break off.
Make remaining initials in this manner, reversing colors for center initial. Sew initials to towel. Embroider outline in chain stitch as illustrated.
EDGING ... Starting at long side with Blue, make a chain slightly longer than length desired. 1st row: Dc in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across until row measures length desired, having number of sps divisible by 6 plus 1. Break off. Cut off remaining chain. 2nd row: Attach Yellow to first sp, ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make 2 tr in same sp, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), * ch 6, skip 1 sp, make a 3-tr cluster in next sp. Repeat from * across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Blue to first sp, in each sp across make 4 sc, ch 3 and 4 sc. Turn. 4th row: Sl st in next 4 sc, sl st in next loop, ch 4, 2-tr cluster in same loop, (ch 3, 3-tr cluster in same loop) twice; * ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 3, in next loop make (cluster, ch 3) twice and cluster. Repeat from * across. Break off. 5th row: Attach Yellow to first sp, in same sp make (sc, ch 3) 3 times and sc; * in next sp make (sc, ch 3) 3 times and sc; 2 sc in each of next 2 sps, in next sp make (sc, ch 3) 3 times and sc. Repeat from * across. Break off. Make another edging in same way. Sew edgings to both ends of towel.

J. & P. Coats Tatting-Crochet, Size 70: 2 balls each of No. 181 Shaded Lt. Yellows; 1 ball of No. 48 Hunter's Green, and
J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5: 1 ball of No. 12 Black.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hooks No. 7 and 14.
Make a sketch of monogram desired, having initials 2¼ inches high.
MAIN BAR ... 1st row: Starting at narrow edge with Hunter's Green and No. 14 hook, * ch 5, tr in 5th ch from hook. Repeat from * until piece measures length desired. Working over tr bars, make 7 sc in each sp across. Break off. Attach Yellow to opposite side and make 7 sc in each sp across. Join and break off.
Pin main bar of initial to sketch. Sew to towel. With Black Pearl Cotton, embroider Cross Bars and narrow strips in running stitch. Embroider a French knot in the center of each ring on Main Bar.
EDGING ... 1st row: Starting at narrow edge with Yellow, * ch 12, d tr in 12th ch from hook. Repeat from * until piece measures width of towel, having an uneven number of loops. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 15 sc in each loop across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Hunter's Green to center sc of first loop, ch 9, (tr in same sc, ch 5) twice; * tr in same sc, ch 3, sc in center sc of next loop, ch 3, (tr in center sc of next loop, ch 5) 3 times. Repeat from * across. Break off. 4th row: Attach Black to first sp, sc in same sp, (ch 3, sc in next sp) 3 times; * (sc in next sp, ch 3) 4 times; sc in next sp. Repeat from * across. Break off.
HEADING ... Using No. 7 hook, attach Black to opposite side of starting chain, * ch 3, sc at base of next d tr. Repeat from * across. Break off. Make another edging in same way. Sew to both ends of towel.

Coral washcloth 13 inches square.
EDGING ... 1st rnd: Attach thread to any corner, sc closely around edge of washcloth. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: * Ch 7, skip ½ inch on washcloth, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next loop, * ch 5, 7 d tr in same loop, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to first ch of ch-5. Break off.
MOTIF ... Ch 60, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: * Ch 5, skip 4 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * around. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next loop, * ch 5, 7 d tr in same loop, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Sew motif in place.

J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 2 skeins of Yellow (No. 9).

EDGING—FORGET-ME-NOT … Starting at center of Flower with Blue, ch 1 loosely, ch 4 more in the usual manner. * Holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make 2 tr in 5th ch from hook, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster), ch 4, sl st in same place as last tr was made (petal); ch 4, make a 2-tr cluster in same place as last cluster was made, ch 4, sl st in same place (another petal). Make 2 more petals (Forget-Me-Not completed). Ch 20. Repeat from * until piece measures 1¼ times the length desired. With 3 strands of Six Strand make a French knot (5 times over needle) in center of each Forget-Me-Not.
HEADING … 1st row: With Green make 10 sc, ch 3 and 10 sc over each ch-15 across. Turn. 2nd row: Sl st in next 5 sc, * ch 9, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 9, skip 5 sc, tr in next sc, skip 4 sc on next loop, tr in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 5, skip 5 sc, tr in next sc. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: In next sp make (dc, ch 1) twice; ** dc in next sc, ch 1, * in next sp make (dc, ch 1) 4 times. Repeat from * once more. Repeat from ** across. Break off.
INSERTION … Work as for Edging until the necessary number of flowers is completed. Attach Blue to center of last flower, * ch 15, sc in center of next flower. Repeat from * across. Break off.
Now with Green, work Heading as for Edging working on both sides of flowers. Make more flowers as necessary and tack them in place as illustrated with French knots.
MATERIALS REQUIRED — American Thread Company "Star" Tatting Cotton or "Star" Mercerized Crochet Cotton size 50 to 70. White or Colors—1 Ball of Tatting Cotton will make edging for 1 end of a 14 inch towel.

2nd Row—Ch 4, 2 s c in last flower ring, repeat from beginning 3 times, ** ch 2, sl st over ch between flowers, ch 2, 2 s c in next flower ring, * ch 4, 2 s c in ring, repeat from * twice repeat from ** to end of row, break thread.
