This foundation will serve as a launching pad for your musical creations. In the following recipes, we’ll explore FL Studio’s powerful features, enabling you to refine your skills and create remarkable music. Get ready to cook up some fantastic tunes!

Creating and managing patterns

In this recipe, we’ll explore the art of constructing intricate musical patterns using FL Studio’s powerful pattern sequencer. Patterns are the building blocks of your composition, representing specific musical elements such as melodies, chord progressions, basslines, and drum patterns. By understanding how to create, arrange, and effectively manage patterns, you will be able to build dynamic and evolving compositions easily.

Getting ready

A selection of audio samples or virtual instrumentsA creative mind, ready to experiment

How to do it

Launch FL Studio and open the project you’ve been working on from the preceding recipe or create a new project:

Ensure that you have audio samples or virtual instruments loaded into Channel rack. Channel rack is where you create and manage patterns. Each pattern represents a specific musical element, such as a melody, chord progression, bassline, or drum pattern. To create a pattern, use the pattern selector from the toolbar and click on the + button to create a new pattern. Now, let’s construct patterns in Piano roll:Select the pattern you just created, and then, from Channel rack, right-click on the channel or virtual instrument you want and choose Piano roll. Piano roll allows you to program melodies, chords, or drum patterns.Select the desired instrument or sample channel in Channel rack to focus on a specific pattern.Use the grid and snap settings in Piano roll to align your notes precisely to the desired timing and musical intervals.Experiment with different note lengths, velocities, and positions to create engaging and dynamic musical phrases.

Figure 1.15: Adding notes in Piano roll

To add variations and interest to your patterns, you can create different sections or variations within a single pattern:Copy and paste sections within Piano roll to create repetitions or variations of musical phrases.Use the Paint tool or Draw tool to input or modify notes in Piano roll, experimenting with different rhythms and melodies.

Figure 1.16: Piano roll velocity

Adjust note velocities to introduce dynamics and variations in the volume of individual notes.Explore pitch bends, modulation, or other expressive MIDI techniques to add character and nuance to your patterns.

Figure 1.17: Piano roll target control options

Next, let’s see how to arrange patterns in Playlist. Once you have created multiple patterns representing different musical elements, it’s time to arrange them in Playlist to build your composition:Drag and drop patterns from Channel rack onto Playlist to place them in the desired order and position, as shown in the following figure:

Figure 1.18: Patterns together in Playlist to make a track

Extend or shorten the duration of patterns in Playlist by dragging their edges to control the length of different musical sections.Experiment with looping patterns or creating variations of patterns by copying and pasting sections in Playlist. Now, Let’s see how to rename and organize patterns. As your composition grows, it becomes essential to organize and manage your patterns effectively:To rename a pattern, right-click on its name in Channel rack and select Rename. Give it a descriptive name that reflects its content or role in the composition.Group related patterns together by selecting them in Channel rack and choosing the Group selected option from Channel options. This will help to keep your workspace organized, especially in complex compositions.

Figure 1.19: Personalize Playlist

Let’s explore working with multiple Patterns: FL Studio allows you to work with multiple patterns simultaneously, allowing for intricate and evolving compositions:Use the pattern selector from the toolbar to switch between different patterns quickly.Experiment with layering patterns by stacking them vertically in Playlist. This enables you to combine different musical elements and create complex arrangements.Add transitions and variations by introducing new patterns at different points in your composition, creating a sense of progression and evolution.

Figure 1.20: How notes and instruments look in Channel Rack

Finally, let’s move on to experimenting and refining. Music production is a creative process, so don’t be afraid to experiment and explore different ideas:Make use of FL Studio’s tools, such as Step Sequencer or Drumpad, to create intricate drum patterns or experiment with rhythmic variations.Utilize the ghosting feature in Piano roll to display notes from other patterns, helping you visualize how different patterns interact and complement each other.Listen to your composition frequently and make adjustments as needed to achieve the desired musical flow, dynamics, and overall coherence.

Next, you will see how to use patterns in different ways to structure your song.

Creating a song structure with patterns

In this recipe, you will learn essential techniques to structure your music using FL Studio’s Pattern-based approach. You will achieve this by arranging Patterns, creating variations, and organizing musical ideas into different sections such as intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and others. By doing so, you will be able to create dynamic and engaging compositions that will resonate with your audience across different genres.

Patterns created in the preceding recipeMusical ideas for different song sections (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and so on)

How to do it

Launch FL Studio and open the project you’ve been working on from the previous recipes.Ensure that you have created patterns representing different musical elements, such as melodies, chords, basslines, and drum patterns.Understanding Playlist: Playlist is where you arrange and structure your patterns to create a cohesive composition. It allows you to visualize your entire song’s arrangement and control the timing and order of patterns. Playlist features a grid that represents time, with each cell corresponding to a specific duration.

Let’s learn how to create song sections:Start by identifying the different sections your song will have, such as intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and so on.In Playlist, click on an empty cell to select it as the starting point for your first section.Decide on the length of the section by adjusting the duration of the cell. You can drag its edges to extend or shorten it.Select the desired pattern from Playlist and drag it into the selected cell to assign it to the section. Now, let’s see how to arrange Patterns within sections. Once you have assigned patterns to the different sections, arrange them within each section to create variation and progression:In Playlist, drag and drop patterns within a section to determine their order and timing.Experiment with different combinations and variations of patterns to create engaging musical phrases and transitions.Use copy-and-paste techniques to duplicate patterns within a section for repetition or slight variations.

Next, let us learn how to create transitions and variation. Smooth transitions between different sections can be achieved by creating transition patterns:Create transition patterns by copying elements from the previous section and blending them with elements from the upcoming section.Add fills, drum rolls, or variations in instrumentation to add excitement and signal a change in section.Use automation to introduce effects or volume changes gradually to build anticipation and create smooth transitions. Playlist offers various features to enhance your arrangement and workflow. Let’s explore them:Automation clips: Use automation clips to control parameters such as volume, panning, or effects over time.Pattern clips: Assign patterns to specific cells within Playlist for easy management and arrangement.Pattern blocks: Create pattern blocks by selecting and grouping patterns together. This allows for easy duplication, repetition, or manipulation of multiple patterns simultaneously.Coloring: Use different colors for sections or patterns to visually distinguish them and aid in navigation and organization (we can also add an auto color with the Random Color option).

Next, let’s learn how to refine the song structure:Listen to your composition and evaluate the flow and structure.Make adjustments to the arrangement, such as extending or shortening sections, adding or removing patterns, or creating additional variations.Experiment with different transitions, such as building up to a chorus or creating a bridge to provide contrast and excitement. Finally, remember to save your progress:Regularly save your project as you make changes and refine the song structure to avoid losing any progress.Use the Save or Save As options under the File menu to save your project as a .flp file.

In the next recipe, you will discover multiple tips to understand how to use Patterns efficiently and how they really work.
