CHAPTER ONE
EVERYBODY IS TALENTED
At first glance, it might be easy to overlook the sparks of brilliance that lie within you. In a world brimming with the brilliance of others, it's natural to wonder if there's a place for your unique light. But let me assure you that there's an inherent beauty in the way our talents and gifts unfold—each at its own pace, revealing itself in due time.
Not only does the Bible make it clear that every one of us is unique (Ps. 82:6, Jn. 10:34), but science has also proven it to be true. No human is born without something special.
The only thing is that when we discover our gifts, how we develop them and the purposes for which we use them are different. Everybody cannot discover their potential at the same time. And not everyone will be able to use their unique gifts for the exact purpose for which it was given. This is due to the different circumstances that we are either born into or have had to face along our way in life.
In this chapter, we'll delve into the heart of these truths. We'll explore the journey of "Rooting for Significance," where I grappled with feelings of inadequacy, and how these very feelings led me to uncover the hidden riches of my "Unknown Potential." Through my stories, I will show you the various ways of discovering your God-given potential and the critical stand we will all take before "God's Scale of Worth," where our actions and impact are going to be weighed against the backdrop of eternal relevance.
Come on, let's go!
Rooting for Significance
In the quiet corners of our memories, we all have those moments that shaped the perception we once had of ourselves. I remember clearly the anticipation that built up within me when I was very little. I was nominated by one of our Sunday School teachers in the children's church for a Bible verse recitation during a children's day celebration in church. After hard preparations with my mom, on the day of the event, my heart began to race, palms sweating. As I stepped onto the stage, the grip of fear silenced me before the microphone, leaving me with an inexplicable feeling of insignificance. I tried to speak, but I couldn't find my voice. Then people started clapping to cheer me up, but I couldn't even remember what I had rehearsed. So, they had to take the microphone away from me and give it to someone else who was bold and vocal.
Have you ever felt the same way? Have you, too, stood at the crossroads of your potential, grappling with the weight of self-doubt? In those moments of vulnerability, I want you to know that even the giants of faith faced similar trials. In the face of uncertainty, Moses hesitated, doubting his own eloquence, yet God's response was a promise of guidance and strength (Exodus 4:10-12).
The road to significance is often paved with the stones of fear and doubt. It's easy to look at the achievements of others and feel inadequate, like I did in the era when talent discovery competitions loomed, where others seemed to excel effortlessly. My friends like Ezekiel Adeboye and Dare Adeyemi found their voices in gospel music, Olatunji Iremide and Adelaja Oluwafemi soared in the tech world. Meanwhile, I grappled with a void, yearning for my own path of significance, like an insignificant pebble on the shores of life.
Embracing our talents and stepping onto the stage of life requires vulnerability. It's like Peter stepping out of the boat onto the tumultuous waters to meet Jesus. At that moment, the sea was both a metaphor for the challenges we face and a symbol of limitless potential. Though doubt may have caused Peter to waver, it was his unwavering faith that allowed him to walk on water (Matthew 14:22-33).
The journey towards realizing our significance is a process, not a destination. It's about acknowledging our fears, stepping out in faith, and persevering through the storms that threaten to engulf us. Just as the mustard seed grows into a mighty tree (Matthew 13:31-32), our potential may start small, but with nurture and determination, it can blossom into something extraordinary.
So, if you find yourself at the threshold of uncertainty, take heart. Your moment of significance awaits, though the path may be strewn with challenges, but remember, even the most revered heroes of faith faced moments of doubt. Let your heart resonate with the truth that in weakness, God's strength is made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9). You are not alone in your journey, and your unique gifts are a testament to the divine masterpiece that you are. Just as a symphony is crafted from individual notes, your life has the potential to create a melody that will resonate through eternity.
Unleashing the power within
Being gifted or talented is a multifaceted concept that extends far beyond innate abilities like singing, writing, or artistic skills. While these talents are certainly part of the tapestry of human gifting, the essence of being gifted encompasses a much broader spectrum.
At its core, being gifted implies possessing an exceptional quality, skill, or attribute that sets an individual apart from others. It's a divine endowment, a blessing from the Creator, bestowed upon every human being.
It's crucial for you, the one reading this book, to realize that you possess something unique in your life—a gift waiting to be discovered and unleashed. This gift may not always be apparent or fully developed; it may appear hidden, rough, or under-appreciated. However, it is a blessing from God, a seed of potential that has been sown within each individual.
Discovering and nurturing one's unique gift is a transformative journey. It requires self-awareness, exploration, and a willingness to embrace one's uniqueness. It's about recognizing that every individual has a purpose, and their gift is the tool with which they can fulfil that purpose.
In essence, being gifted is not limited to a select few with extraordinary talents. It is an inherent aspect of our humanity, a divine endowment that makes each person special. It is a reminder that every individual has the potential to make a meaningful impact in their own unique way, contributing to the betterment of the world. Embracing one's gift is not just a personal journey; it is a path toward greater purpose and fulfilment.
Unknown Potential
In life, there's a realm of untapped potential waiting to be discovered through the myriad of experiences that shape our destiny. It is a realm hidden from our immediate view, concealed beneath the layers of our routine and comfort. It is the realm of the unknown where hidden talents lie dormant, waiting for the touch of circumstances to awaken them.
