About Tom Miller

Introduction

A Complete Picture

The Actor’s Reckoning
By Tom Miller
Foreword
Read this book and discover a few things. One, you’re not as good an actor as you think. Two, your acting is mechanical and not consistent. Three, you don’t know what acting is, but you think you do. Four, you’re a lousy audience member. Five, you don’t know that acting happens on and off the stage. Six, you’ve made it so complicated that you don’t know it’s effortless. Seven, you’re a prima donna, but you think you’re gracious and humble. Eight, you’re late. Nine, you think memorizing your lines is a part of acting. Ten, your preparation sucks.
At least most of these are true of every actor because acting is not a place one arrives at, it is rather a never-ending process of balance and risk, trust and betrayal. Acting is for people who enjoy being hurt and hurting others, in beautiful ways—ways which illuminate the human spirit and maintain the integrity and development of the species.
If acting isn’t something you would die for, forget this book and go do a play somewhere. Enjoy the applause, get your check, fuck off and die.
This is not the book for you.
