But you can control your reaction to the causes of stress. In this course, you'll learn about the health impacts of stress, the characteristics of burnout, as well as ways of coping with stress. When the Balance Shifts

Companies are increasingly concerned with the work/life balance of their employees, because happier employees perform better overall. Many people now realize that working longer hours doesn't necessarily mean being more productive.

Severe imbalances between home and work typically show up in common areas. You might recognize some of the symptoms of being out of balance.

Do you sometimes find yourself dealing with overdue warnings for bills you didn't even realize you'd received? Not opening your mail immediately can be a sign that you're neglecting to manage your day to day life.

When did you last speak to family members? Do you routinely turn down invitations from friends? A work/life imbalance can result in you isolating yourself from family and friends.

Have you forgotten any family birthdays or missed important appointments? Forgetting important or meaningful dates and commitments is a symptom of a work/life imbalance.

Do you react rashly, or too late, to problems that arise? Responding reactively, rather than taking proactive measures to head off a problem, is a symptom that your work/life balance is slipping.

Do you feel as if you've been stumbling from one illness to another? When was the last time you visited the gym? Neglecting your health is a strong indicator that your work and home life are out of balance.

If you exhibit any of these symptoms, you're right to be concerned. Assessing your current work/life balance will allow you to make some improvements, if necessary. This can help you find more time for your hobbies, family, and friends while still being effective at work.

When you maintain a balance between work and other commitments or interests, you're a better multitasker and are able to manage multiple responsibilities without feeling guilty about sacrificing priorities at work or outside of work.

You're also more likely to feel in control of your life. This can lead you to feel more secure, happier, and thus motivated to work for an employer that supports your right to make choices between work and home life.

Consider this. Just as your car runs more smoothly when the wheels are in alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, goals, and values are in balance. When you maintain your car and give it the right oil and fuel, it needs less energy to go faster and farther. When you maintain your life balance, you have the energy to live a satisfied life full of rewarding work, family and friends, and personal fulfillment.

The Benefits that Come from Being in Balance

Can you relate to this situation? Raj is a project manager at a construction company who's trying to spend more time with his recently widowed father. He's also remodeling his house, he's up for a promotion, and he's managing multiple projects at work. Between being displaced in his house, needing time off for activities with his father, and trying to keep current projects on schedule and on budget, Raj is juggling too many tasks and is very stressed. Raj knows he doesn't have the right balance of all the activities in his life, because he feels pulled in many directions.

Whether there's too much focus on work, or too little, when your work/life balance is off, the result is stress. Think about your current situation and your current needs. What does a work/life balance mean to you?

When you begin to assess your work/life balance, you're really analyzing whether you have an acceptable share of time between your needs and those of the others around you. Of course, you need to do this for your work life and your private life, or you won't be able to find the right balance for you at this time in your life.
