“Inspired Philanthropy is a good book—don’t miss it. It is a most ingenious mixture of philanthropic philosophy, personal accounts of how some individuals have handled their giving and, most interesting, a rich section of exercises that leads you through the gift-making process. This book makes you want to do philanthropy the way it should be done. It is suitable for all people touched by philanthropy—givers and takers, big and little. The field will owe these authors.”

FOREWORD TO THE SECOND EDITION
The Power of Doing Good: Giving to a Worthy Cause Is Worth More Than You Know
When charitable requests come in the mail, making a pitch for your support to stop global warming, prevent cancer, fund a local food bank, or protect a nature preserve, do you read the letters? Do you throw them away with the supermarket circulars? Or do you give as much as you can?
There are scores of good causes, and many of us feel we can’t afford to give to all—or to any. The larger view suggests that we can’t afford not to give to some causes. There’s a moral component to the issue, of course, and everyone has to decide privately how much he or she owes the world. But there’s another factor to consider, one that’s not often mentioned. When you donate money to a cause you believe in, you’re giving yourself the gift of power.
Here is a familiar scene: you’re sitting in front of a stack of monthly bills, writing checks and watching your balance shrink. You come upon an envelope from an organization that supports a charity you care about, or maybe a cause you’ve given to before, when you felt flusher, or a group whose work you’ve always admired. Hard-pressed this month, you toss the envelope away, gather up your paid bills, head for the mailbox, and set out to run some errands. You feel depleted.
Let’s play it another way. While writing checks, you discover an envelope you know contains a worthy plea and, instead of throwing it away, you open it, read the letter, and write another check—for $25 or $100; the amount doesn’t matter as long as it won’t break the bank. As soon as you’ve signed your name, the light dawns: hey, come to think of it, you can spare a little money this month. Later, when you head out to pick up the kids from their soccer game, you’re lighter on your feet—having discovered new resources of both good fellowship and funds, you’re a little less pressured. You’re buoyant, proud. Confident, curious. Ready to give and receive. And that’s when wealth of all kinds comes your way.
It’s really this simple: by giving, you become the receiver of gifts—not the smallest of which is an acquaintance with your own power of choice and your freedom to exercise it for the good.
Suze Orman
PREFACE
Come, my friends,’Tis not too late to seek a newer world.Push off, and sitting well in order smiteThe sounding furrows; for my purpose holdsTo sail beyond the sunset, and the bathsOf all the western stars, until I die.
—Lord Alfred Tennyson, Ulysses
Giving has become hip and cool. The greatest transfer of wealth from one generation to the next is taking place while sports figures, media moguls, and entrepreneurs across the globe amass new riches. Using some of those fortunes in the service of humanity has become headline news:
• Lance Armstrong’s simple yellow LiveFree bracelets start a fashion craze while raising millions of dollars for cancer research. Hollywood and other superstar givers grab headlines and draw attention to those in need at home and abroad.
• Oprah Winfrey builds a $40 million school in South Africa for girls.
• “Giving kiosks”—donation ATMs—make giving at some churches as familiar as withdrawing money at the bank, while faith-based initiatives attract the support of those at the highest levels of government.
• Ted Turner gives $1 billion to the United Nations, encouraging more global giving; Warren Buffet gives $31 billion to the Gates Foundation, creating a cascade of other mega-philanthropists “giving while living.”
• Technology millionaires such as eBay’s Pierre Omidyar, Paul Brainard, and Jeff Skoll champion venture philanthropy.
• Philanthropy across the globe expands at the speed of an Internet connection.
Philanthropy itself is changing, as donors discover and create new ways to give:
• Donors place nearly $1 trillion in donor-advised funds at community foundations and family foundations.1
• The Internet democratizes the philanthropic landscape through expanded online donations, and supports a new emphasis on youth service to their communities and the world through sites enabling adults to fund—and youths to direct—youth giving accounts through .
